Over 200 passengers on an Air India flight (AI-183) bound for San Francisco experienced a difficult ordeal due to a delay exceeding 30 hours.

The takeoff was delayed due to unforeseen technical issues and cargo loading problems, which unfortunately meant a longer wait for everyone on board.

PTI reported citing sources, “After being rescheduled several times since Thursday (May 30) evening, flight AI 183 took off from the Delhi airport at around 21.55 hours, making a long wait for the passengers, including senior citizens and children."

Air India took special permission to land in San Francisco because night flights are restricted there. The 16-hour Delhi-San Francisco flight would arrive at night, potentially causing a landing restriction issue.

The flight, which was initially scheduled to take off at around 1530 hours on Thursday (May 30), was delayed for nearly 6 hours before being rescheduled for Friday (May 31).

On Friday, the flight was first scheduled for around 1100 hours departure which was again changed to 1500 hours and after finally pushing back at around 1745 hours, the plane came back to the bay, according to the sources.

Originally, a technical glitch was suspected and later payload issues were noticed.

However, Air India has not issued an official statement regarding the significant flight delay.

Show cause notice issued

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show cause notice to the airline regarding flight delay and lack of sufficient care for passengers.

The notice stated the extensive delays of two international flights: AI 183 from Delhi to San Francisco on May 30 and AI 179 from Mumbai to San Francisco on May 24.
