The rooftop from which 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at former United States (US) president Donald Trump during his campaign rally in Pennsylvania had been identified by the Secret Service as a "potential vulnerability" in the days before the rally, NBC News reported on Monday (July 15) citing sources.
The NBC News report said that the building, owned by a glass research company,is adjacent to the Butler Farm Show, an outdoor venue in Butler, Pennsylvania. The sources told the network that the Secret Service was awareof the risks associated with it.
The security arrangements during the rally
One of the sources told NBC that someoneshould have been on the roof or securing the building so no one could get on the roof. Earlier, Secret Service spokespersonAnthony Guglielmi said that the agency workedwith local law enforcement to maintain event security.

However,no officers were posted on the building used by Crooks,outside the event’s security perimeter but only about 148 yards from the stage.
Butler County District Attorney Richard Goldinger said that his team has anEmergency Services Unit team, which deployed four sniper teams and four “quick response teams” at the rally.
But Goldinger pointed out thatSecret Service agents were in charge of security outside the venue.
Secret Service defends response
Followingthe assassination attempt on Trump, the Secret Service has been facing widespread criticism for its failure to detect the gunman. However, the agency, which isresponsible for protecting presidents and former presidents, defended its response.

"SecretServicepersonnel on the ground moved quickly during the incident, with our counter sniper team neutralizing the shooter and our agents implementing protective measures to ensure the safety of former president Donald Trump," Kimberly Cheatle, theSecretService director, said in a statement.
