‘Not the worst idea’: Trump floats plan for UFC-style ‘migrant league of fighters’ amid border crisis

Former United States President Donald Trump, who is known for his often dehumanising and inflammatory remarks against immigrants, has saidhe had floated the idea of a “migrant league of fighters” to Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) chief Dana White.
During his campaign speeches on Saturday (June 22), thepresumptive Republican presidential nominee also backed the controversial plan of displaying the Ten Commandments in schools and elsewhere.
‘Migrant league of fighters’
“I said, ‘Dana I have an idea. Why don’t you set up a migrant league of fighters and have your regular league fighters,” Trump told a crowd of conservative Christians at a Faith and Freedom Coalition gathering in Washington DC.
He added, “And then you have the champion of your league – these are the greatest fighters in the world – fight the champion of the migrants. I think the migrants’ guy might win, that’s how tough they are.”

Trump went on to say that White “didn’t like that idea too much, but actually, it’s not the worst idea I’ve ever had.”
Trump repeated the comments at a campaign rally in the US city of Philadelphia, where he sought to court Black voters, later on Saturday.
The former president has repeatedly come under fire for his inflammatory language while speaking about migrants.
Earlier this year, the Republican said he thought undocumented migrants who commit violent crimes are “not humans” but“animals.”
In December, Trump insisted that he never even read Adolf Hitler’s manifesto Mein Kampf after he said immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country” and was accused of using Nazi rhetoric.
Biden campaign responds
The incumbent US president and presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden’s campaign responded to Trump’s latest remarks calling them “incoherent” and “unhinged”.
“Fitting that convicted felon Donald Trump spent his time at a religious conference threatening to round up Latinos, bragging about ripping away Americans’ freedoms, and promising to be even more extreme if he regains power,” said a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, Sarafina Chitika.
She added, “Trump’s incoherent, unhinged tirade showed voters in his own words that he is a threat to our freedoms and is too dangerous to be let anywhere near the White House again.”
Trump backs controversial law
While speaking to the group of evangelicals Trump said they “cannot afford to sit on the sidelines” during the upcoming election.

He also endorsed displaying the Ten Commandments days after the US state of Louisiana passed a controversial law requiring the list of religious precepts to be displayed in every public school classroom.
The opponents of the law have said that they will challenge in courtthe new mandate, which raises questions about the constitutional separation of church and state.
“Has anyone read the ‘Thou shalt not steal’? I mean, has anybody read this incredible stuff? It’s just incredible,” Trump said on Saturday. He added, “They don’t want it to go up. It’s a crazy world.’’
The former president’s remarks were met with cheers, as hesought the support of the religious right ahead of the election in November.
