The trade dispute between the United States and China, the world’s two biggest economies, has been escalating for over a year.

China's foreign ministry said on Monday the country will never surrender to foreign pressure after Washington renewed its threat to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports in an escalating trade dispute.

Foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang made the comments at a daily briefing in Beijing.

The United States escalated a tariff war with China on Friday by hiking levies on $200 billion worth of Chinese goods in the midst of last-ditch talks to rescue a trade deal. Trump had delayed the tariffs as negotiations between Washington and Beijing were progressing.

The trade dispute between the United States and China, the world’s two biggest economies, has been escalating for over a year.

Both nations have repeatedly slapped billions of dollars worth of retaliatory tariffs on each other's goods as the rivalry between them has soared.

On Friday, Trump issued orders for the tariff increase, saying China "broke the deal" by reneging on earlier commitments made during months of negotiations.

Meanwhile, China and the United States have agreed to hold more trade talks in Beijing, Vice Premier Liu He had said.

"Negotiations have not broken down," Liu, China's chief negotiator in the talks, said in Washington on Friday, according to state television on Saturday. "Quite the opposite, I think small setbacks are normal and inevitable during the negotiations of both countries. Looking forward, we are still cautiously optimistic," Liu said.

Earlier in the day, Trump on Twitter said, "China is "dreaming" that former Vice President Joe Biden or any Democratic candidate will win the 2020 presidential election as they "love ripping off America."

"China is DREAMING that Sleepy Joe Biden, or any of the others, gets elected in 2020. They LOVE ripping off America!" Trump tweeted.
