IPL 2024: How Yash Dayal redeemed himself after Dhoni’s 110m ‘monster’ six

Saturdaynight'sblockbuster clash between RCB and CSK in Bengaluru was no short of drama as the hosts stunned five-time winners to win the match and seal the remaining playoff spot in IPL 2024. RCB seamer Yash Dayal buried the ghost of last season to come on top against the best finisher, MS Dhoni, in the final over to see his team home. Dhoni, however, pulled the game inCSK'sfavour with a 110m monster six on the first ball before Dayal picked his wicket on the next delivery.

With CSK needing 17 off the last six balls to go past the total where they were ensured of a playoff spot ahead of the RCB (because of a better NRR), Dayal conceded a six off the first delivery but turned the game on its head with five slower ones, resulting in deceiving the batters and restricting them under the asked score.

As RCB won the game by 27 runs, enough for them to surpass CSK on the NRR tally, they qualified for the playoffs this season. What makes this win evenmore specialis, at one point during the tournament, they were lingering at the tenth position after six straight losses.

However, they turned the tide by winning the last six games, with destiny also favouring them as other results also went in their favour.

Dayal buries past demons

AfterKKR'sRinku Singh smashed Dayal for five sixes in the final over to win the game in Ahmedabad last season,Dayal’scareer, morale and even health went down the drain. Not only did Gujarat Titans drop him straightaway, Dayal was said to have felt depressed about the whole episode, resulting in him losing weight. Worst, GT released him ahead of the auction last year.

Fast forward a few months, Dayal opened the bowling for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru this season. Although he went for runs and conceded plenty of sixes this year,Dayal’smoment came when RCB needed him the most – against Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni, and he delivered.

Receiving praises from all quarters, the special one was from Rinku Singh, who posted a story on his Instagram handle, saying,‘God’splan baby’,with commentator Harsha Bhogle calling it the most beautiful thing he read on the internet in a long time.

Meanwhile, RCB has now finished fourth on the points table, meaning they will play the Eliminator on May 22 in Ahmedabad.
