Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have booked their place in the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) Playoff after registering their sixth consecutive win on Saturday (May 18). Needing to win by 18 runs to seal Playoff qualification, RCB got the better of Chennai Super Kings (CSK) by 27 runs at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The defeat for CSK also saw them get eliminated from the league stage as their title defensecame to an end.

Needing to win by 18 runs or more to qualify for the Playoff, it was calm and composed bowling in the final over from Yash Dayalwhichhelped RCB beat CSK. Dayal stopped the likes of MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja despite CSK needing 11 runs to qualify for the Playoffs with five balls in hand. He scalped Dhoni on the second ball, having conceded a six on the previous delivery.That was followed by priceless dot balls before restricting Jadeja from hitting the qualification runs.

CSK could only manage 191/7 in their 20 overshavingbeen askedto score at least 201 runs to clinch qualification.

Earlier asked to bat first, RCBmanaged to score218/5 in their 20 overs despite rain being an uninvited member during their innings. Skipper Faf du Plessis (54) and Virat Kohli (47) laid the foundation for the innings as the duo stitched 78 runs for the opening wicket. Rajat Patidar (41) and Cameron Green (38 off 17) also contributed to the team’s causehelpingRCB reach the 200-run mark.

For CSK, Shardul Thakur scalped two wickets but gave away 61 runs in his four overswhileTushar Deshpande and Mitchell Santner ended with one wicket each.

Playoff scenario

With the win, RCB have become the fourth team to book a qualification berth and join Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) and Rajasthan Royals (RR). RCB finish fourth and will play in the Eliminator clash against either SRH or RR, depending on who finishes third. The other Playoff contest will see KKR play against RR or SRH in Qualifier 1.Both theEliminator and the Qualifier 1 willtake placein Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium before the attention switches to Chennai for Qualifier 2 and final.
