India: Noida schools will remain closed on Friday as Yamuna water level rises

All schools in Noida will remain closed on Friday, July 14 as the district administration has issued a notice in the wake of a heavy downpour. The water level of the Yamuna River is peaking in the district and the surrounding areas, due to incessant rains in Delhi-NCR. The order was issued by the Gautam Buddha Nagar administration, and will be applicable to all classes till 12.

The letter has been issued by the District Inspector of Schools (DIoS) Dr Dharamveer Singh.

In the capital, the water of the Yamuna River has come onto the roads breaking all-time records. Yamuna water level breached the danger marks of 205.33m and reached 208.48m on Thursday morning. The water level is expected to rise even further, and hence, the Delhi NCR administrations have announced closure of schools.

The district administration of Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh also announced holidays in all schools till July 15. Amid the heavy rainfall and water logging issues, the District Magistrate has also issued an advisory for the local people.

Delhi schools, colleges also closed

Before the Noida school closure, the Delhi government announced the closure of schools, colleges and universities. After a meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the decision was announced.

As per the orders, except for all government offices providing essential services, staff of all other government offices will work from home till Sunday and employees of private offices are also advised to work from home till Sunday.

Rising Yamuna water level

As per the Central Water Commission, the Yamuna water level reached 208.48 metres at 8:00 am on July 14. The Delhi Police has also imposed section 144 of CrPC as a precautionary measure in the flood-prone areas in Delhi.

Traffic advisory in Delhi

Delhi Traffic Police urged commuters to avoid the Ring Road stretch between Monastery and ISBT, Kashmere Gate, saying the traffic has been affected due to the overflowing Yamuna River. It also asked commuters to avoid the Ring Road stretch near the IP flyover from Rajghat to Nizamuddin carriageway as overflowing sewer water has affected the traffic.
