
Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians have been handed a minor blow in their preparations for the upcoming season after a hamstring injury ruled out Sri Lankan Dilshan Madushanka. Theinjury was sustained during the Bangladesh tour and Dilshan is now forced to sit out of IPL 2024. Hardik Pandya’s men did not waste time naming a replacement as South African youngster Kwena Maphaka was roped in.
“Mumbai Indians announce Kwena Maphaka as a replacement for Dilshan Madushanka, who has been ruled out of IPL 2024 due to an injury. Maphaka has joined the squad and he has the distinction of being one of the youngest players both domestic and overseas to be a part of the IPL and carrying forward the MI legacy of finding new and exciting talent who are developed into high-performance cricketers,” a statement on the club’s official website read.
Mumbai paid a whopping $554,000 (INR 4.6 crore) for the services of the Sri Lanka star who is regarded as a powerplay specialist in the T20 version.
For Maphaka, he joins an already star-studded bowling line-up of Mumbai Indians where he will join the likes of Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah and newly arrived Luke Wood. Gerald Coetzee, another South African in the Mumbai ranks will be a huge boost, considering the withdrawal of Jason Behrendorff due to injury. They also have the services of young Arjun Tendulkar who made his debut last season for the Royal Blues.

Mumbai will start the new campaign on Sunday (Mar 24) when they take on Gujarat Titans at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The match will be a homecoming for new Mumbai skipper Hardik Pandya who left Gujarat for Mumbai in November during the trading window.
