Rishabh Pant makes comeback as India name 16-man squad for first Test vs Bangladesh

Pant realises Bangladesh threat, says ‘cannot afford to underestimate...'

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the India squad for the first Test against Bangladesh on Sunday (Sep 8). Rishabh Pant made a comeback into the Test team for the first time since his life-threatening accident in December 2022, while KL Rahul has also been included.

India are scheduled to play two Tests against Bangladesh, with the first Test starting on September 19 in Chennai and the second one scheduled for September 27 in Kanpur.

Rohit Sharma continues to lead the side, with Virat Kohli also present. Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Sarfaraz Khan are the other specialist batters in the side.

The selectors have also picked Dhruv Jurel as the second wicketkeeper in the side apart from Pant. Among the spinners, India's long-standing duo of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja are accompanied by Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav.

Mohammed Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deep, and Yash Dayal are the four pacers picked in the side. This is the first time Dayal has been given a call-up for the Test side.

The left-arm pacer most probably pipped Arshdeep Singh, India's T20I bowler, for the place. The selection is quite a turn around for Dayal, who was hit for five sixes in a row in an IPL match's last over a couple of years ago.

With BCCI announcing the team for only one Test, it is clear that they want to keep their options open before they select the squad for the five-Test Australia tour later in the year.
