India's record chase of 406 against the West Indies in the second ODI of the three-match series on Wednesday (Sep 30) has not amused head coach Gautam Gambhir at all. India surpassed the 400+ target with 39 balls and eight wickets to spare. This is also only the second time in the history of ODI cricket that a 400+ total has been chased successfully, with the only other instance being South Africa chasing down 434 against Australia. Gambhir, while acknowledging the batting prowess of both teams, said that the bowlers need to have something to work with on the pitch.
Gambhir not amused with India's record chase
Skipper Shubman Gill, who scored 223 not out, added 255 runs for the opening wicket with Rohit Sharma (101) in 26.2 overs to take the game away from the West Indies. India bowling coach Morne Morkel has shown his support for Rohit Sharma, expressing confidence that the Indian skipper will soon return to form in the ongoing ODI series against England. We have seen throughout the series that the ball is moving around. So batting up front isn’t easy,” Morkel said at the pre-match press conference. “No doubt Rohit will work it out. Rohit Sharma's scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs have raised questions about his form ahead of the series-deciding third match against England at Lord's on Sunday.

India bowling coach Morne Morkel has shown his support for Rohit Sharma, expressing confidence that the Indian skipper will soon return to form in the ongoing ODI series against England. Morkel said there were “no worries or concerns” about Rohit’s recent struggles and highlighted the opener’s experience and composure as key strengths for the batting unit. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the third and final ODI at Lord’s, Morkel pointed out that batting at the top of the order has been difficult throughout the series because of the assistance available for fast bowlers. “As I said earlier, it’s hard work with a new ball up front. We have seen throughout the series that the ball is moving around. So batting up front isn’t easy,” Morkel said at the pre-match press conference. “No doubt Rohit will work it out. He has done it in the past, drawing on his experience. And he just brings that calmness to the batting line-up. So, without a doubt, no worries and concerns at all with the way he is going about things,” Morkel added. Rohit has managed scores of 11 and 26 in the first two ODIs, making Sunday’s series decider at Lord’s his final chance to leave a mark on the contest. England levelled the series after recovering from their defeat in Birmingham with a win in Cardiff, setting up a decider at the Home of Cricket. India will be chasing their first ODI victory at Lord’s since 2004. A win in the decider would not only seal the series but also provide a fitting finish to a successful tour. With Sundar unavailable for the series decider, Morkel said the team management is keeping every selection option open before finalising the playing XI. “I think as I sit here, all options are on the table. We literally arrived here now half an hour ago. So I am pretty sure Gautam (Gambhir) will have a look at the surface, and they probably will announce 12 or 13 guys and then tomorrow make the final call in terms of overhead, in terms of what we see then. The cricketing world is mourning the death of Sir Garfield Sobers, who passed away on Friday at the age of 89, bringing an end to the remarkable journey of one of the greatest cricketers in history. While his extraordinary records and achievements have long secured his place among the sport's legends, Sobers was equally admired for his humility, generosity and deep respect for every generation of cricketers. One such moment came during India's all-format tour of the West Indies in July 2023. Ahead of the opening Test in Barbados, which marked the final Test appearances in the Caribbean for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Sobers attended India's practice session along with his wife. Instead of waiting for the Indian stars to approach him, the legendary former West Indies captain quietly watched from the stands before walking onto the field after training had concluded.Sobers spent time interacting with Rohit and Kohli before India's then-head coach Rahul Dravid introduced him to a young Shubman Gill. It was a simple yet memorable interaction that reflected Sobers' lifelong love for cricket and his willingness to connect with players across eras.
Cricket loses one of its greatest icons
The death of Sir Garfield Sobers was confirmed by his son, Daniel. Born in Bridgetown, Barbados, on July 28, 1936, Sobers passed away just 11 days before his 90th birthday. Widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder the game has ever produced, Sobers enjoyed a glittering international career spanning two decades. Between 1954 and 1974, he played 93 Test matches, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78, including 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries. A rare cricketer capable of bowling left-arm pace, orthodox spin and wrist spin, Sobers also claimed 235 Test wickets. He featured in one One-Day International, taking a wicket, while also earning recognition as one of cricket's finest fielders. In 1968, while representing Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan, Sobers became the first batter in First-Class cricket history to hit six sixes in a single over, a feat that remains one of the sport's most iconic moments.
Watch the video here of Garry Sobers meeting Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

Tributes pour in
Cricket West Indies led the tributes following Sobers' passing. "A great innings has come to an end. In our hearts, now and forever, Sir Garfield Sobers," wrote Cricket West Indies (CWI) on X. The governing body later paid a heartfelt tribute to the legendary all-rounder. "In the story of cricket, there are great players. There are champions. Then, there are those rare individuals who redefine the very meaning of greatness. Sir Garfield Sobers was the greatest cricketer the world has ever seen," the CWI later said in a statement. “His mastery of batting, bowling and fielding was unparalleled, but his true significance reached far beyond the boundary ropes. Sir Garfield Sobers has completed his final innings, but his legacy will forever endure in the hearts of our region, and the story of the cricketing world.” The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also remembered Sobers' immense contribution to the game. "The BCCI mourns the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, a true icon of the game and one of cricket's greatest-ever all-rounders," it said on X. “His extraordinary achievements, lasting influence on Caribbean cricket and immeasurable contribution to the global game have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire generations.” English county club Nottinghamshire also paid tribute to one of its greatest overseas players. "Nottinghamshire are extremely saddened to hear of the passing of Sir Garfield Sobers, at the age of 89. Arriving at Trent Bridge shortly after rules on overseas players appearing in the County Championship were relaxed, Sobers was immediately appointed captain, and lifted Notts from 15th place to fourth in his first summer of English domestic cricket.""That season ended with Sobers becoming the first batsman ever to hit six sixes in a single over of six consecutive balls in First-Class cricket, as he put Glamorgan to the sword at Swansea," the club added. Also Read: Who are the new Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders? Sobers captained the West Indies in 39 Tests between 1965 and 1972, recording nine victories, 20 draws and 10 defeats. He made his First-Class debut at just 16 before earning his Test cap a year later against England. One of the defining moments of his career came in February 1958 when he scored an unbeaten 365 against Pakistan at Kingston. The innings was then the highest individual score in Test cricket and remained the world record for 36 years. Across 383 First-Class matches, Sobers amassed 28,314 runs at an average of 54.87, including 86 centuries and 121 fifties, while also taking 1,043 wickets. The year 1958 remains the finest of his Test career. In just eight matches, Sobers scored 1,299 runs at an astonishing average of 144.33, registering six centuries and three fifties. He remains the West Indies' fourth-highest Test run-scorer and eighth-highest wicket-taker. Sobers was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1975 for his services to cricket and was named one of Wisden's Five Cricketers of the Century in 2000. His achievements transformed the role of the all-rounder and ensured his legacy will remain woven into the history of cricket forever.

The third and final ODI against England at Lord's on July 19 could mark Rohit Sharma's final appearance in One-Day Internationals for India. According to sources, the BCCI's senior selection committee has informed the veteran opener that it plans to move forward with a younger squad after the ongoing England series. The selectors are understood to have held discussions with Sharma last week, along with India head coach Gautam Gambhir, regarding the team's future direction. Sources indicate that the selection panel wants to provide opportunities to emerging players, including Yashasvi Jaiswal, and does not see Sharma featuring in its plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. "The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour and they are moving on from him after this series. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court," said a source in the Indian board. Also Read: Sports ministry orders neutral probe into Asunta Lakra's allegations, seeks explanation from Hockey India The report further says that Sharma held discussions with several BCCI officials during the England tour and was disappointed with the decision. The 38-year-old has already stepped away from two international formats in recent years. He retired from T20 Internationals on June 29, 2024, shortly after captaining India to the T20 World Cup title, and announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7, 2025, ahead of India's tour of England. Last year, the selection committee also replaced Sharma as India's ODI captain, appointing Shubman Gill to lead the side. The move reflected the selectors' intention to build a younger team with an eye on the future. Despite the reported decision, Sharma leaves behind an impressive ODI captaincy legacy. Under his leadership, India reached the 2023 ODI World Cup final, where the team adopted an aggressive batting approach that transformed its style in the 50-over format. That fearless philosophy continued into the 2024 T20 World Cup, with India lifting the trophy under Sharma's captaincy. However, the veteran batter has struggled for form in recent matches. In Thursday's ODI at Cardiff, he managed 26 runs from 47 balls, adding to concerns over his recent performances. If the reported decision stands, Saturday's ODI at Lord's could bring the curtain down on one of Indian cricket's most successful ODI careers.
