India coach job: Gautam Gambhir to be interviewed in Mumbai on Tuesday
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir will appear for an interview for the role of the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team on Tuesday (June 18). The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will be interviewing him in Mumbai today. The veteran is being considered the frontrunner to take up the job from Rahul Dravid, who will sign off from the top post after the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA.Along with Gambhir, another candidate will also be interviewed for the role of the selector.
Gambhir's name started doing the rounds, especially after Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) triumph in IPL 2024. Under Gambhir's mentorship, Shreyas Iyer-led Kolkata won their third IPL title, the first in 10 years, and the former cricketer's involvement in making strategies and team combinations was lauded by many. Since then, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly been keen on roping Gambhir to replace Dravid.
Recently, former Indian spinner Anil Kumble -- who also coached India for a year -- spoke on Gambhir's likely appointment. He told Star Sports, "You will have to give him (Gambhir) time. He certainly is capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams, he has been a captain for India, for his franchise. He has all the credentials to be that. But, Indian team coaching is slightly different. So you will have to give him time to settle in."
It will be interesting to see how Gambhir settles in with the current lot of players, given that he has also played with many of them, such as Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, R Ashwin, etc.
At present, the Rohit-led Indian team is gearing up for their Super 8 games in the T20 WC. They are placed in Group 1 along with Australia, Afghanistan and West Indies. The Men in Blue will take on Afghanistan on Wednesday (Jun 19) at the Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.
