Indian ODI captain Shubman Gill wants to fine-tune a few areas despite beating the West Indies 2-1 in the recently concluded ODI series. While the batting prospered for the hosts, with India posting 300-plus totals in all games, including their highest successful run chase in the second One-Dayer, their death bowling and fielding—mainly dropped catches—hurt them most. The meeting was attended by the two Indian captains Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, board secretary Saikia, Laxman and even Gambhir. Although Saikia had then dismissed his absence by saying that Agarkar was out of town and in no internet zone for personal reasons, the BCCI’s official remarks indicated the separation. “It wasn’t that the meeting was decided upon within 48 hours. The chief selector missing such an important conclave where the way forward for Indian cricket was discussed doesn’t make sense,” a BCCI official said. “You have got to be indifferent to what’s happening around to miss such an occasion, and Agarkar is not the sort to do so. He had his plans in place and so skipped it.” What led to Agarkar’s departure? Agarkar’s tenure as the chief selector coincided with Indian Cricket’s glorious years, when they won two T20 World Cups and an ICC Champions Trophy, all in the space of three years; however, like how all good things come to an end, so did his tenure. What possibly triggered it was Rohit Sharma’s retirement episode during the UK tour this year, when several reports claimed that the Indian veteran would retire after the final ODI at Lord’s, where he smashed a brilliant hundred in a losing cause.

Former England batter and Test great Stuart Broad’s father, Chris Broad, was a renowned ICC match referee who oversaw 622 international games in his over two-decade career. Broad recalls dodging several bullets, some of which were also politically inclined, during his time refereeing in international cricket. In his latest interview with The Telegraph, he made some explosive remarks against the apex body – the ICC, accusing them of blatantly asking him to show leniency towards the Indian Cricket Team over the slow over rates in several games. And I was always someone who believed in right and wrong and in certain parts of the world it’s a bit like the River Ganges – right and wrong are so far apart and there’s a lot of dirty water in between them that you have to deal with, so I think as someone who comes from a right and wrong perspective, to last 20 years in that politically active environment is a pretty good effort,” he said of what he endured during his time as the ICC match referee.
Broad accuses Ganguly
Having served at the top position on a cricket field and dealt with who’s who of the cricket world, Broad pointed out a certain Ganguly for getting away with doing what he wanted to as a BCCI President. Gill, KL Rahul and the star pair of former captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli were among the first batch of players that landed in Perth for the marquee first ODI three days later. Tight security at the airport meant that the fans who came to greet and welcome the ODI outfit had limited access to the Indian side; those waiting outside the team hotel since midnight were also unable to take photos, as the tired players headed straight to their rooms. WATCH VIDEO -

India ready for Aussie challenge
Shortly after completing a series win over the touring West Indies side across two Tests at home, Gill and several all-format players re-linked with the white-ball to depart for Australia for an eight-match series, including three One-Dayers and five T20Is. While Perth will host the series opener, Adelaide and Sydney will stage the remaining two One-Dayers, before the action moves to the east coast for the five T20Is. Meanwhile, Rohit and Kohli returning to the ODI side remain the highlight of the forthcoming 50-over series, with the pair donning the Indian colours for the first time since winning the Champions Trophy crown in March early this year. Even though both were active in red-ball cricket by then, their shocking decisions to retire from Tests midway through IPL 2025 extended their return time to Indian cricket. Gill, who replaced Rohit as Team India’s new Test captain earlier, also assumed ODI captaincy, with head coach Gautam Gambhir and chief selector Ajit Agarkar backing him in his new role. Although this sudden switch in the leadership group suggests that the decision-makers are preparing a new-look team for the 2027 ODI World Cup, it also fuels speculation that Virat and Rohit might announce international retirements after the three One-Day Internationals. However, it remains to be seen how all concerned parties are aligned with the team's goal moving forward.

India’s Asia Cup preparations underway in Dubai: Here’s what Suryakumar Yadav, Gambhir and Gill have to say

BCCI, the wealthiest cricket board, is about to get richer after raising jersey branding rights prices, with the new rates set to blow the roof off. The latest reports suggest that the Indian Cricket Board has raised the stakes for jersey sponsors looking to connect with the BCCI, with the board welcoming bidders for a fresh three-year sponsorship cycle. While the (new) jersey sponsors will have to pay INR 3.5 crore per match for bilateral fixtures, the number reduces to INR 1.5 crore per match for multilateral matches (ICC/ACC). A Cricbuzz report states that these rates reflect a modest increase from BCCI’s previous partnership with Dream 11, which was INR 3.17 crore per bilateral game and INR 1.12 crore for ICC and ACC events, reflecting a targeted uplift of over 10 per cent in bilateral fixtures’ valuation and nearly three per cent for multi-team tournaments. Also read | Team India kicks off Asia Cup 2025 campaign with first training session in Dubai Although the discrepancy between the two categories revolves around the visibility factor, with sponsors gaining prominent reach while being placed in front of Indian jerseys during bilateral games, the ICC and ACC events restrict the branding exposure to mere sleeves. The new sponsorship deal will cover nearly 130 matches over the next three years, including major ICC events, the 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2027 ODI World Cup. However, considering the reported rates, the BCCI could pocket close to INR 400 crore in this window, with the number potentially going much higher depending on the bidding outcome. Also, considering the bidding date is scheduled for September 16, the Men in Blue will feature in the forthcoming Asia Cup 2025, which starts Sep 9 (in the UAE) without a lead sponsor, with a senior BCCI official confirming that an interim sponsor is unlikely. Meanwhile, (earlier) on September 2, the BCCI issued an Invitation for Expression of Interest (EOI) for the lead sponsors' right, also outlining restrictions for several categories of companies, including gaming, betting, crypto and tobacco brands, from applying. The board also excluded companies dealing in sportswear, banking and finance, non-alcoholic cold beverages, fans, mixers, grinders, safety locks and insurance due to potential conflicts with existing sponsors.

While the (new) jersey sponsors will have to pay INR 3.5 crore per match for bilateral fixtures, the number reduces to INR 1.5 crore per match for multilateral matches (ICC/ACC).
