Ace India keeper-batter Rishabh Pant acknowledges Bangladesh’s rise after their maiden series win over Pakistan, admitting India is not taking them lightly. As India and Bangladesh face off in two Tests starting September 19 in Chennai, Pant downplays discounting Bangladesh, saying because the pressure is so much more in international cricket, no one can afford to underestimate any opposition.

The stylish left-handed batter returned to international cricket after spending more than a year on the sidelines due to multiple yet severe injuries suffered during a road accident on December 30, 2022. Although he missed all the cricket action last year, Pant gears up for the upcoming hectic schedule, where India plays ten Tests in the next five months, including two against Bangladesh and three versus New Zealand at home before flying Down Under for a five-match series against Australia.

Selected to play in the first round of the Duleep Trophy, which began on Thursday (September 5), Pant reflected on the importance of playing domestic cricket and how India is preparing for the first series of the home season.

“As the Indian team, we focus on maintaining our own standards and looking at how we can improve. We play with the same intensity regardless of the opposition and aim to give 100 per cent every day.

Veteran Indian off-spinner R Ashwin highlighted the major difference in captaincy of Rohit Sharma compared to his predecessors Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni. After seniors such as Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly stepped aside, in the mid-2000s, Dhoni took over as the all-format captain before he passed the baton to Kohli. After Kohli, Rohit took over the reins and remains the Test and ODI captain to date. Under all three, India reached great heights. Ashwin, who made his international debut during Dhoni's captaincy era and has played the majority of his cricket under him, Kohli and Rohit, shared the captaincy difference between the three.

'Dhoni and Virat were also tactically strong but Rohit works more on tactics'

In a recent interaction on Vimal Kumar's YouTube show, Ashwin was quizzed about the captaincy styles of the famed trio. Ashwin, a veteran of 100 Tests with 516 scalps in whites, stated, "2-3 things are nice about Rohit's captaincy. He always keep the environment of the team light. He makes an effort to keep it light. And he stays very balanced and tactically, he is strong. Both Dhoni and Virat were also tactically strong but Rohit works more on the tactics."

I have played most of my career with these three captains."

Rohit became the T20I captain in late 2021, succeeding Kohli, before being appointed the all-format captain in early 2022.
Former Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh's father Yograj has launched a fresh attack on MS Dhoni for 'ruining' his son's career. Yograj, who has often slammed Dhoni, feels Yuvraj had more to offer to Team India but his career was cut short by four to five years due to former Indian captain Dhoni. Further, Yograj stated that Yuvraj deserved to be honoured with Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, for his services to Indian cricket during his illustrious career.

Talking to the Switch YouTube channel, Yograj said, "I won’t forgive MS Dhoni. He should look at himself in the mirror. He is a very prominent cricketer, I salute him. But what he did to my son is unforgivable. Everything is coming to light now, and it can never be forgiven."

Former batting great Matthew Hayden feels neither of the two teams – Australia nor India, are outright favourites in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series. Though his ex-teammate and captain Ricky Ponting predicted the hosts would win the series 3-1 this time, ending their dry run against India in Tests, Hayden says the hosts have let go of the home advantage quite a few times recently.

Hayden’s remarks have come after Australia lost twice at the Gabba in Brisbane in the last few years (first against India in 2021 and then to a lower-ranked West Indies team the last time), a fortress never breached in around 40 years.

Although Australia maintained its domination against all visiting teams all this time, India beat them twice at their home - in 2018 and 2022, besides thrashing them in two away series in the past decade.

"One is a day-night Test match [in Adelaide] - the second Test match," Hayden said.

"Again, once you get those overhead conditions under that twilight zone, they can be really difficult [to bat on]. I would go as far as to say that the home advantage in Australia has been taken away quite a lot, simply on the basis that if you get the wrong side of a certain session, be that you're 4 for 130, at twilight, you can be 8 for 150.

"So, there's no chance to naturally dominate a game. It's quite even the whole time, so it's a very different type of cricket because you don't have those traditional surfaces,” he continued.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s rise to the top in such a brief period has impressed everyone, and Hayden is no different. Calling Jaiswal ‘a package’, Hayden said he looks forward to watching the Indian opener do well Down Under but cautioned him not to take things lightly against the Aussies.

Hayden, a well-renowned puller of the cricket ball, lauded Jaiswal’s superb stroke play, especially against the spin.

[But] that'll also have its vulnerabilities. I'm looking forward to seeing how he adjusts on bouncy tracks. We did notice a few times in the IPL that he's a very hard hitter of the ball - [with the] pull shots in particular."

He, however, also put out the warning signs for Jaiswal against the three world-class seamers Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

"But that'll be challenged by three world-class speedsters, assuming they're all fit, and on much bigger grounds as well - grounds where it has to almost be the perfect contact for that ball to sail over for six. You can get caught easily, three-quarters of the way in the fence. So they have little adjustments that world-class players like Jaiswal will make for sure,” Hayden added.

Australia's home advantage ‘has been taken away quite a lot’, says Hayden as Border-Gavaskar series nears

New Zealand Test captain Tim Southee lauded India pacer Jasprit Bumrah during the just-held CEAT Cricket Rating Award ceremony on Wednesday (Aug 21) in Mumbai. On the sidelines of the event, Southee lavished huge praise on Bumrah for making a successful international return after a long layoff, due to back surgery, and termed him 'tremendous' across formats.

Bumrah was out of cricketing action in late 2022 due to a recurrent back issue. He, thus, missed a plethora of series and returned before last year's home ODI World Cup, where he ended with 20 wickets (fourth-most). He has been in roaring form since then. The speedster claimed 19 scalps in the India versus England home Tests early this year and played a key role in the Rohit Sharma-led side's T20 WC title-winning run, in the West Indies and the USA, in June. Bumrah returned with the Player-of-the-Tournament award in the T20 WC, accounting for 15 scalps at an economy rate of 4.17.

'We are just seeing a great version of Jasprit Bumrah'

On the sidelines of the award ceremony, Southee said, "To be able to firstly bounce back from the major injury and come back, he's even better than what he was beforehand. Throw in on top of that, having to juggle multiple formats, can be difficult at times as well. He seems to have been able to do that with ease as well. He's probably more experienced and understands his game a bit more. He probably had that time where he was injured to come back and be recharged, refreshed."

Meanwhile, the last time India toured Australia, Shami broke his wrist while batting in the first Test in Adelaide, which India lost embarrassingly.
Former Pakistan batter Basit Ali has ruled out Ishan Kishan's comeback into the Indian team. Basit feels the swashbuckling wicketkeeper-batter will not be able to make a national comeback till the 2025 Champions Trophy, to be held early next year in Pakistan. Moreover, the ex-cricketer has advised Kishan to focus on IPL 2025 to stage a return in the Indian colours.

Kishan was part of Rohit Sharma-led India's 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, at home. He even played the home five T20Is versus Australia, soon after the ODI World Cup, but hasn't played for India since he opted to return home midway during the tour of South Africa in Dec-Jan. Since then, he has not been picked in the Indian team, lost his central contract and is playing in domestic tournaments in order to make a comeback. However, Basit feels he should 'focus on IPL 2025' as he won't be able to make a comeback till the next edition of the Champions Trophy.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit said, "Ishan Kishan needs to focus on the IPL now because he doesn't have a chance of returning to the Indian team till the Australia series. In fact, there's no chance till the Champions Trophy. Let's see what happens after that."

Let's see what happens after that." Also read: 'Get back to the high standards...': Sunil Gavaskar questions Virat Kohli-Rohit Sharma missing Duleep Trophy Currently, Kishan is leading Jharkhand in the Buchi Babu Trophy. He impressed one and all in his side's tournament-opener, where Jharkand beat Madhya Pradesh by two wickets. The southpaw scored an impressive 86-ball century in the first innings (114 off 107 balls) and remained unbeaten on 41 to guide his side to a narrow win. Meanwhile, India is gearing up for a hectic home season -- where they will host Bangladesh and New Zealand -- before the away tours to South Africa and Australia. With Rishabh Pant's return, KL Rahul's rise as a white-ball keeper-batter and Dhruv Jurel's emergence, Kishan's comeback is not going to be easy by any means.

India captain Rohit Sharma is a true leader in every sense. Despite being the most lethal top-order batsman for most of his career, he has always been the bowlers’ captain, and one example of this was visible during the 2024 T20 World Cup Final. When South Africa needed 30 off five overs, Rohit knew taking wickets would only help his team win from there; so, without bothering to keep Bumrah available for the last over, he finished his quota earlier, which eventually helped India win the title and end the ICC trophy drought.

Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour, who sat on the sidelines watching Rohit pull off a masterstroke, lauded the India captain for being intelligent and sensible in his decision-making.

“He is tactically very good as a captain. In the T20 World Cup final, he finished Bumrah's over early. A lot of people must have questioned that decision, but that decision put us in the situation, where 16 was needed in the last over. His tactical decisions on the field are spot on.

Speaking on the same lines, Rathour said, "He is a player's captain. He is invested with the players heavily. I have never seen a captain, who is so invested in team meetings and strategies. He spends a lot of time on the team's strategy. He is part of the bowlers' meeting, batters' meeting. He wants to sit with the bowlers and batters to try and understand what they are thinking. He invests a lot of time with the players,” he concluded.

Newly-appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir was keen on having former South Africa seamer Morne Morkel as part of his backroom staff with BCCI, after a slight hesitation, granting Gautam his wish. With Morkel’s appointment, the netizens quickly brought Gautam’s not-so-old video, which he only posted on his Instagram handle, to everyone’s notice, wherein he commented on BCCI's policy of appointing foreign coaches, saying they take money and vanish. Meanwhile, Morkel has joined assistant coaches Ryan ten Doeschate and Abhishek Nayar and fielding mentor T Dilip as part of Gambhir’s backroom staff. When Gambhir took on BCCI’s tactics Duncan Fletcher - the former England coach, was the last foreign coach of the Indian Team, with the BCCI picking Indians as the top bosses since. He added that the Indian fans end up giving too much importance to these overseas coaches, and they eventually vanish after earning buckets. “One really good thing that has happened in Indian cricket in the past six or seven years is that Indians have started coaching the Indian cricket team. I am a very strong believer in this. Indians should coach the Indian cricket team. All these foreign coaches, whom we end up giving a lot of importance to, they only come here, they make money, and they vanish,” Gambhir said during an interview. Gambhir's old video on foreign coaches 'vanishing' resurfaces after Morkel joins India's backroom staff

India have hosted only a handful of day-night Tests so far. The Indian men's team hosted its first-ever day-night Test, also their first overall, in late 2019 when Bangladesh toured India for two Tests. Since then, India have only hosted two more pink-ball Tests on Indian soil. Recently, BCCI Secretary Jay Shah explained the board's reluctance to host day-night games in the purest format. Shah expressed how such contests end in 2-3 days, demeaning the traditional five-day format, and lead to loss for broadcasters as well as spectators.

During an interaction with TOI, Shah said, "You buy a ticket for a five-day match, but the game ends in 2-3 days…There is no refund. I am slightly emotional about this."

India defeated Bangladesh within three days when they hosted their first-ever day-night Test. The match was held at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata where Virat Kohli & Co. won by an innings and 46 runs. Post the Covid-19 outbreak, when India played their first Test series on home, they hosted England in a five-match series. The fourth and penultimate Test was held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad. The contest also ended soon, in two days, with India winning by ten wickets.

While India isn't hosting day-night Tests, the national side will play a pink-ball Test during their upcoming tour of Australia, later this year. Before that, India will play host to Bangladesh and New Zealand -- with no pink-ball contest -- prior to their departure Down Under. 'Who am I to tell Gautam Gambhir..?', Jay Shah's take goes VIRAL on India's one coach stance

Ahead of India's home season, former South African pacer Morne Morkel has been appointed India's bowling coach. His contract commences on September 1. The development was confirmed by BCCI Secretary Jay Shah. Morkel was not able to join the Indian team during their recent tour of Sri Lanka, due to personal reasons. However, he is now set to take over as the bowling coach with the commencement of India's hectic home season.

Earlier, it was reported that current head coach Gautam Gambhir had recommended Morkel's name as the bowling coach, as per a report in Cricbuzz. The two played together during KKR's golden days, during Gambhir's captaincy tenure, and were also part of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG)'s backroom team. The South African, thus, completes Gambhir-led coaching staff which comprises assistant coach Abhishek Nayar (batting) and T Dilip (fielding).

Morkel had a fruitful career at the international level. He represented South Africa in 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is. He accounted for 309 Test scalps -- including 18 five-fers -- 188 ODI wickets and 47 victims in T20Is. In the IPL, the 39-year-old featured for KKR, Delhi Daredevils (now known as Delhi Capitals) and Rajasthan Royals (RR).

It will be interesting to see how Morkel -- who retired from international cricket in 2018 -- operates with Indian pacers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, etc. Notably, Morkel served as Babar Azam-led Pakistan's bowling coach during last year's ODI World Cup in India. Official! Former South Africa pacer Morne Morkel named Team India's bowling coach

Rahul Dravid, the former India head coach, has pinpointed the lowest point of his coaching career, and it’s not the 2023 ODI World Cup or the World Test Championship Final loss.

Under Dravid, the Men in Blue tasted success at the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas by winning it for the second time. With that, Team India also ended their ICC trophy drought, last winning in 2013 (Champions Trophy) under MS Dhoni.

Though India stayed at the top of the table across all formats for the longest time during his tenure, there was this one series where they failed to bring home the glory despite leading it at one stage, and Dravid picking the same is not coincidental. Yes, that was the away South Africa Tests in 2021, a fortress India hasn’t conquered in the longest format.

“If you ask me what the lowest point is, I would say the South Africa Test series early on in my career,” Dravid said, as quoted by News18.

India won the first Test but failed to win the remaining two, losing the three-match series 1-2. Though Captain Rohit Sharma missed out on getting picked due to injury, India came close to creating history but fell shy.

“We won the first Test match in South Africa in Centurion, and then we were playing in the second and third Test match. We have never won a series in South Africa, as you know. It was a really big opportunity for us to win that series.

“Some of our senior players were not there. Rohit Sharma was injured, and we didn’t have some senior players in that series. But we were very close, and in both the Test matches—the second and the third test matches—in the third inning, we had a big opportunity.

“We could have set a decent score and won the game, but South Africa played well. They chased back in the fourth inning. So, I would say that that was probably my lowest point in my coaching of not being able to win that series in spite of being ahead,” Dravid added.

Lifting morale of the team

Dravid admitted he took learning from that series loss and made required changes wherever needed to ensure the team went past the winning line the next time.

“But there were a lot of learnings from that. You know a lot of those experiences, and you know we learnt a lot from them,” he said.

“So I think as coaches, what is very important is that you will go through ups and downs. What is really important is to maintain that balance and realise that you can’t always win games. Other teams have also come to play; you’re playing against some world-class sides, and you have no right to always win," he added.

Meanwhile, per the latest report, Dravid is said to replace Kumar Sangakkara as the new head coach of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.

Ace India seamer Mohammed Shami is closing in on full fitness, with the latest report suggesting he might return to playing competitive cricket during the home season that begins with the Bangladesh Tests on September 19 in Chennai. Shami is currently completing rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru and is progressing well, reported ESPNcricinfo citing sources close to the information.

The right-arm seamer suffered an ankle injury while playing the 2023 ODI World Cup at home. Although that looked far from serious even after the tournament's completion, with the selectors naming him in the Test squad for the South Africa tour later, Shami pulled his name out as he underwent surgery on his troubled ankle.

That, however, ruled him out of the on-field cricket indefinitely. Shami returned home in March and continued to get treated at the NCA since. Meanwhile, before flying to the Island Nation for the recently concluded tour, the BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar provided the latest update on Shami, saying he has resumed bowling and is taking baby steps to return to his rhythm and match fitness.

Sri Lanka proved too good for India in the recently concluded ODI series, beating them in the three match series 2-0 for the first time in 27 years. Having lost the T20Is (0-3) earlier, the hosts needed to turn the tables around quickly, and they did that magnificently. Maheesh Theekshana, a white-ball specialist, explained how Sri Lanka plotted India’s downfall in the One Dayers.

Chasing 249 in the final game on Wednesday (August 7), India, for the third time in the series, got off to a flyer, with Captain Rohit Sharma again leading from the front.
However, once he lost his wicket, the Sri Lankan spinners, mainly Dunith Wellalage, who picked a five-for, tore into the Indian batting order, wrapping them up for a lowly 138.

‘Win boosts our confidence’

Theekshana added that Sri Lankan batters are used to playing on such turning wickets and thus managed to survive the Indian spin attack comfortably. He also admitted that the ODI series win was a confidence booster for him and the team.

"Even in domestic, the wickets are like this, and our batters know how to play," Theekshana continued while praising the Sri Lankan batting unit.

From Sachin Tendulkar to Rahul Dravid: Top 6 Indian batters with most fours in ODI cricket

Team India was all over Sri Lanka during the first half of the chase (until the 14th over) when they were cruising at 97/0 in the second ODI. However, what transpired after saw the Men in Blue crumble under pressure and got all out on 208, losing the game by 32 runs. The highest run-scorer for India, Captain Rohit, smashed a brilliant 64 off 44 but failed to get his team past the winning line for the second time in two games.

Rohit whacked a 29-ball fifty, hitting four sixes and five fours during his knock. Despite getting out while playing an attacking shot, Rohit refused to compromise on the intent, admitting to playing fearless cricket irrespective of worrying about the result.

“The reason I got 65 runs is because of the way I batted. When I bat like that, there is bound to be risk-taking, and I'm not afraid to do that. Whenever you get out, whether you score 100, 50 or zero, you feel disappointed if you don't get across the line. But that won't change my intent,” Rohit said in the post-match presser in Colombo.

With the loss, Rohit attained an uncalled-for record of becoming the first Indian captain in more than 25 years not to win an ODI series against Sri Lanka.

However, despite the result in the second One-Dayer, which now sees the hosts take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series, Rohit was honest in his team's assessment and didn’t shy away from admitting it was far from good.

“We didn't play good cricket, that's why we lost the game. We do understand the nature of this surface and the nature of how the game is going to go as well. It gets really, really tough in the middle overs.

“So, you have to try and capitalize in the Powerplay and get as many runs as possible. That's what both openers were trying to do. But we were just not good enough today,” the India captain added.

SL vs IND 2024: ‘I am not afraid to take risks’ - Rohit on ‘playing with intent’ despite shock 2nd ODI loss

Team India’s new interim bowling coach, Sairaj Bahutule, has given a heads-up to the fans, asking them to be ready to watch a different playing template from now.
Since Gautam Gambhir took over the reins from Rahul Dravid, the difference in the decision-making was visible from the offset.
“I think spinners – Washi, Axar and Kuldeep – contributed well. To restrict them to 230 was, I think, a good effort,” he concluded.

Arshdeep and Siraj began well, and Shivam bowled well on a wicket, which was slightly helpful to the spinners. “I think spinners – Washi, Axar and Kuldeep – contributed well. To restrict them to 230 was, I think, a good effort,” he concluded. Meanwhile, the second ODI is scheduled for Sunday (August 4) in Colombo. (With inputs from PTI)

SL vs IND 2024, 1st ODI: Indian players don black armbands in memory of Anshuman Gaekwad

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir is chasing a few unanswered questions as the Men in Blue prepare for the road to the Champions Trophy with the three-match ODIs against Sri Lanka starting August 2 in Colombo. The return of Captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli boosts the team’s morale, as newcomers like Riyan Parag and Harshit Rana eye debuts.

However, amidst returns and debuts, everyone seeks answers to who stands tall between KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant as the keeper-batter in ODIs, where does Shreyas Iyer fit in the middle order, will Hardik Pandya return to the scheme of things in the One-Day format and who is India’s third-choice seamer?

The Big Question – KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant?

With Rohit, Shubman Gill and Kohli likely to be India’s top three at the Champions Trophy 2025, the question arises - who plays in the middle order? Will KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant both play? And if that happens, where does Shreyas Iyer come into the picture?

KL Rahul’s return to the squad for the Sri Lanka ODIs ring warning bells for Pant, who recently won the T20 World Cup in the Americas. Although he started ahead of Sanju Samson in the 20-team tournament, Pant could have to wait for his turn in the ODIs since the selectors picked KL Rahul as an incumbent keeper-batter for the three matches.

A match-winner in the middle order and more than a tidy keeper, with his exploits in the 2023 World Cup and away South Africa ODIs enough for evidence, KL is ahead in the pecking order to keep wickets in the SL One-Dayers.

In that scenario, Pant sits out, and Shreyas Iyer makes his much-awaited return to the Indian Team since his fallout with BCCI late last year.
Who will be the all-rounder?

The selectors cleared why they dropped Hardik Pandya for the SL ODIs, with fitness being a massive concern. Although they haven’t discarded the chances for his return, the selectors want Pandya to work on his bowling fitness to work his way back into the team.

Gautam Gambhir chases few unanswered questions as India begin quest for Champions Trophy 2025 with SL ODIs

Former Pakistan cricketer Basit Ali opened up on Ishan Kishan's ouster from Team India setup. Kishan, who slammed a double century in ODIs in late 2022, was part of India's squad for majority of 2023 and travelled everywhere with the team before also being named in the 2023 ODI World Cup squad. However, he played only the first two games before being benched. Since then, the swashbuckling left-hander has fallen behind in the pecking order. The batter made a bold call to skip the South Africa tour in late 2023, soon after the ODI WC, due to travel fatigue. This wasn't well received by the BCCI management. Thus, Kishan was soon excluded from the central contract list and remains out-of-favour across formats to date.

In this regard, Basit opined on Kishan's ouster and said on his YouTube channel, "Ishan Kishan has fallen down the pecking order. Woh bhi thoda sa fashion mein lag gaya tha (He too got into fashion a bit)."

Further, the Pakistani cricketer slammed Sri Lanka for their downfall -- who failed to enter the ODI and T20 WC semifinals and also haven't qualified for next year's Champions Trophy -- and poor form following their ongoing home T20I series loss versus India. "Sri Lanka deserved to not qualify for the Champions Trophy. It seems as if they are also more concerned about maintaining friendships, just as we have seen in the Pakistan team. My personal opinion is that their women's team have performed better (who won the 2024 T20 Asia Cup, beating India in the final on July 28). Sri Lanka's men's team should learn from the women's team how to keep the belief."

Speaking about Kishan, the left-hander needs to be among runs in India's upcoming domestic season to stand any chance of coming back into India's squad. The 26-year-old has played 2 Tests, 27 ODIs and 32 T20Is for India. He last played for India during their home five T20Is against Australia in Nov-Dec 2023.

'He is into fashion': Former Pakistan cricketer's BIG claim on Ishan Kishan's ouster from Team India

Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri opened up on Hardik Pandya's injury concerns. Hardik served as India's white-ball vice-captain since early 2023. Post Rohit Sharma's T20I retirement, after India's 2024 T20 World Cup win, it was expected that he would take over as T20I skipper. Nonetheless, new head coach Gautam Gambhir -- who took over from Rahul Dravid -- and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named Suryakumar Yadav as the new T20I captain. Moreover, Hardik isn't part of India's three ODIs versus hosts Sri Lanka and will leave the tour midway, after the ongoing three-match T20I series in the Island nation (citing personal reasons). Shastri, thus, opined on Hardik's ODI future, saying that he will have to prove his fitness by bowling more overs consistently else it will be tough for him to retain his place.

Talking to host Sanjana Ganesan in a recent show, Shastri said, "I think (it's) very important that he continues to play. I believe match fitness is very important. So whatever T20I cricket there is, he should play as much as he can. And if he feels strong and fit, then obviously he comes into the side for the one-day game as well."

He further opined, "But then again, the bowling becomes important. If you have someone coming and bowling just three overs in where you have to bowl 10 in a one-day game, then the balance of the side takes a hit. If you can bowl consistently eight to 10 overs every game and then bat the way he does, I think he'll play in one-day cricket as well."

Shastri added, "So I think it's up to him really, more than anything else. He understands his body better than anyone. And I'm sure, this will inspire him, especially with the way he did in the World Cup, the way he performed at the right times for India and the World Cup, so that should really get him going. He shouldn't need any motivation to get his fitness right at the top there."

Hardik was last seen in action in ODIs during the home World Cup, last year. He got injured during India's fourth encounter, versus Bangladesh in Pune. Before his injury, the all-rounder was bowling regularly, up to 7-8 overs, if not his full quota. Given that there is so much said and written about his fitness at present, the 30-year-old will be desperate to play both the white-ball formats and silence his critics by bowling maximum overs (especially in ODIs).

Currently, Hardik is involved in the three T20Is between India and Sri Lanka in Pallekele, with Surya-led Men in Blue having an unassailable 2-0 lead after a seven-wicket win in the second encounter on Sunday (July 28).

The Indian Team won the first T20I comfortably by 43 runs, thanks to a captain’s knock by Suryakumar Yadav and cameos from Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant; however, it was the budding all-rounder Riyan Parag who hogged all the limelight with his career-best spell of 3/5 in 1.2 overs.
