Shubman Gill might have missed out on getting picked in the 2024 T20 World Cup squad in the Americas, but his pedigree for success and keenness to improve helped him graduate from an emerging player to part of the leadership group. Suryakumar happy to have ‘old mate’ Gautam as head coach as he embraces T20I captaincy - WATCH

Gautam Gambhir’s appointment as Team India’s new head coach is refreshing for Indian cricket, feels former coach and veteran Ravi Shastri. Replacing Rahul Dravid for the top position, Gambhir, whom Shastri calls a no-nonsense guy, will have plenty riding on his shoulders; however, with the mature team at the helm and having worked or played with most players, the ‘young’ coach Gambhir can make the most of this chance, Shastri believes.

Shastri backed Gautam to bring fresh ideas and instil confidence into the side as the busy international calendar looms. With the away Sri Lanka tour being Gambhir’s first assignment as India's head coach, the former two-time World Cup winner will lead the team in the home season, beginning with the Bangladesh series in early September.

Although Gautam hasn’t coached any domestic or international team before, he guided his former IPL team, Kolkata Knight Riders, to their third title this season as a mentor.

“He's contemporary; he just had a great season in the IPL,” Shastri said of Gambhir on the ICC Review. “I think he's the right age where he's young, he'll come with fresh ideas. He knows most of the players, especially in the white-ball format, having been part of teams in the IPL. So I think it's refreshing.

“And we know with Gautam, he's a no-nonsense guy. He'll have his ideas as well. And the good thing for him is he's got a mature team. He's got a settled team, a mature team. I think even though you might think you're mature, you might benefit from some fresh ideas. So I think it'll be interesting times,” Shastri continued.

‘Player management becomes a key for coach’

Having been in Gautam’s shoes before, Shastri knows and understands what a head coach brings to the table.

Ravi said it would be interesting to see how he manages his players and different squads with all the tools available.

"Obviously, player management becomes the key as a coach," Shastri said.

"So it'll be interesting to see how he goes. I think he's got the tools, he's got the goods for the job, and he's got the experience," he further said.

However, Shastri believes Gautam’s biggest test will be to understand the players, temperament and personalities and help work on them to get the most out of them as cricketers.

"It's a question of just understanding his players as quickly as possible," Shastri said.

"What their strengths are, what kind of human beings they are, and what kind of temperaments do they have. What are their personalities? A lot goes behind the scenes to understand a human being.

"I think that will be his most important task, which I think, again should not be a problem because he's contemporary. He's seen these guys from the outside, he's dealt with a lot of guys who might have played with KKR as well and for Lucknow [Super Giants] when he was there.

"And he's been around the circuit, the moment he finished cricket - and that was not too long ago - and he still is around, plays a lot of the legends cricket as well,” Shastri added.

‘Gambhir’s a no-nonsense guy’ – Ravi Shastri calls new India coach appointment ‘refreshing’

Former men’s team chief selector Krishnamachari Srikkanth has bashed the idea of the current India ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma playing the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia. Newly-appointed India head coach Gautam Gambhir backed the star duo of Virat Kohli (35) and Rohit (37) to play the next ODI World Cup should they stay fit. ‘He will faint in South Africa...’ – Ex-India selector discards Rohit’s chances of playing 2027 ODI World Cup

After India's 2023 ODI World Cup final loss to Australia, in Ahmedabad, many felt Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have ended their run in the mega event. Many also felt they will not be a part of the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA. However, the duo were not only a part of the campaign but played crucial roles to help India win the title, last month in Barbados. Kohli, 35, and Rohit, 37, have managed their workload very well in the recent past, and it has helped in them scoring a bulk of runs. However, the big questions remains: can the two play until 2027 ODI WC?

'Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you'

In this regard, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra gave an interesting take. Talking on Sports Tak, the veteran said, "It involves both physical and mental aspects. It depends on your passion and motivation and in these aspects, there is no dearth at all when it comes to Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. It's because of their drive that they have reached where they are today. From here, young guns like Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you. For that, you need to keep raising your bar. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done that and shown."

Also read: 'Not surprised': GT coach Ashish Nehra shares his take on Hardik Pandya's T20I captaincy snub

'If you give Gambhir a choice, he will say 'No Sai Sudharsan, I am ready'

Nehra pointed out, "2027 is far away at this point. But it's great thinking. If you ask me 'I want to be 18 all my life. I didn't want to retire. If you give Gambhir a choice and tell him his body is fit, he will say 'No Sai Sudharsan, I am ready'." He added, "4 years is far away, but it's a great thought. But, if that can be done, nothing like it."

'Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan will keep making runs and push you' In this regard, former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra gave an interesting take. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have done that and shown." But it's great thinking. If you ask me 'I want to be 18 all my life. I didn't want to retire. If you give Gambhir a choice and tell him his body is fit, he will say 'No Sai Sudharsan, I am ready'." He added, "4 years is far away, but it's a great thought. But, if that can be done, nothing like it." 'If you give Gambhir a choice...': Ex-India pacer on whether Kohli and Rohit can play until 2027 ODI WC

Former Indian batter Robin Uthappa made a big claim on new captain-coach Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir. With Gambhir replacing Rahul Dravid as new India head coach, until 2027 ODI World Cup, all eyes are on how he takes the team forward across formats. Gambhir will be working closely with Rohit, who will continue to lead India in Tests and ODIs and work in tandem with Suryakumar Yadav, the new T20I skipper. Uthappa, who has played under Gambhir in Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), feels Rohit-Gambhir will be 'as effective' as Rohit-Dravid.

'Gambhir is someone who is always available and provides security to his group'

During a virtual interaction by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "He (Gambhir) has been an incredible man manager. The narrative that is set about him as a player on social media is one that is quite 'Gambhir'. But, I think, individually, he is a thorough gentleman. He will be absolutely approachable. He is someone who is always available, he is very empathetic and he is there for his players. He looks after his players really well and he is someone who provides security for the group. We have seen that, not just as a captain, but in his mentorship roles at LSG and KKR. We have seen the results he has produced with both teams."

He further opined, "I don't think his leadership style will change very much. I just think that his passion and the intensity that he brings to this team will be different. He will expect high standards, and he will maintain a high standard himself as a leader. I think he will be a very fair leader and he is someone who provides security to his group. So, I think Rohit and Gautam will make a different combination than Rohit and Dravid, but I think it will be as effective."

‘Rohit and Gautam will make...’: T20 WC winner’s big claim on new captain-coach after Dravid’s term

Former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has shared his opinion on Hardik Pandya losing T20I captaincy to Suryakumar Yadav. With Gautam Gambhir taking over from Rahul Dravid as the India head coach, his first big decision was to announce the new T20I skipper following Rohit Sharma's retirement after the 2024 T20 World Cup win. Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar named Suryakumar as the new captain and reasoned that they need a captain who can play all T20Is. With Hardik being injury-prone, he, thus, missed out on leading India in T20Is despite being the stand-in captain from late 2022-2023 during Rohit's sabbatical.

'If I'm 34-35 years old and I'm someone who's been injury-prone through my career...'

Recently, Uthappa -- winner of the 2007 T20 WC -- opened up and shared his take on Hardik not being appointed captain. During a virtual interaction organised by Sony Sports Network, Uthappa said, "If I were in Hardik's place, I would actually feel taken care of to a certain extent. Because within the Indian cricket ecosystem, a fast-bowling all-rounder is a very rare commodity. If I'm 34-35 years old and I'm someone who's been injury-prone through my career and a certain responsibility has been taken away from me with the mindset of extending my career and giving me the best chance to offer my services to my country for as long as possible, keeping that in view, I would actually say OK this is the best thing for me."

The former right-handed batter Uthappa pointed out, "Yes, leading India and leading a country is one of the greatest honours that any figure can ever imagine. I think, uh, the larger picture would be, can I serve my country for as long as possible and win as many world championships for my country as long as possible."

He further mentioned, "If you asked me between the two what I would pick as a human being, I would say, serving my country and winning as many World Cup championships, irrespective of whether I was a captain or whether I was just a player. "

Uthappa added, "Knowing Hardik Pandya on a certain level, I would say he'd be someone saying it's fine, their perspective is also right. They want a player of my quality and my caliber to be able to serve my country for as long as possible. And I would love to do that as well. I would love to do that in the white format, which I'm currently available for. I can leave whenever, whenever required. God forbid if Suryakumar Yadav has an injury. I'm available, and I'm playing a bunch of tournaments. The need ever requires I will always be available to lead my country, but I would love to serve my country in white-ball cricket."

‘I would actually say...’: Robin Uthappa shares his take on Hardik Pandya being snubbed from T20I captaincy

Newly-appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir shared his thoughts on his relationship with veteran batter Virat Kohli, saying the bond he shares with Kohli is not for everyone to know and definitely not for TRP. Gambhir, who has a history with Kohli, including their latest verbal brawl during last year’s IPL, added Kohli and he represent 140 crore Indians, and at the end of the day, that matters.

"What kind of a relationship I have with Virat Kohli is not for TRP. At the moment, we are representing India, we are representing 140 crore Indians. I have an excellent relationship with him off the field,” Gambhir said when asked about his connection with his former teammate.

Meanwhile, Virat and Gautam have played together for Delhi in domestic cricket and later for India across formats for several years.
Upon undergoing surgery in London earlier this year, Shami returned home and, per Gambhir, has also started bowling. Though he will miss the white-ball leg against Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs starting July 27, Shami might return during the home season that begins with Bangladesh Tests on September 19.

“He (Shami) has started to bowl. The first Test is on 19th September. That was always the goal (him making a comeback by that time). Whether he can make it back to the squad by that time, I'll have to speak with the guys at the NCA,” Gambhir said.

Is the three-different-team theory a myth?

Gambhir answered the most talked-about question since his appointment as Team India's head coach, ‘Will India have three different teams for each format going forward?’

Although Gautam didn’t deny that this could happen in future, chief selector Ajit Agarkar said the idea is to have the right players playing the right formats.

Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee explained why ace all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja is rested and not dropped from the ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series. Team India gears up for the white-ball series against Sri Lanka starting July 27. While Pallekele will host three T20Is, Colombo will be the venue for the One-Day matches. Jadeja, who announced his T20I retirement following the World Cup win in the Americas, will remain on rest and be available for the home season.

“He is one of the deserving candidates,” Agarkar said of Suryakumar Yadav. “He is one of the best T20 batters in the world. We feel that Surya has all the necessary qualities to be a good captain. We wanted a captain, who is likely to play all the games.”

New era in Indian cricket begins as Suryakumar-led squad leaves for Sri Lanka – WATCH

Two stalwarts of Indian Cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, are not done with their careers yet, and if new coach Gautam Gambhir’s words are to be believed, both can play till the next ODI World Cup in 2027, provided they stay fit. Virat and Rohit announced their T20I retirements following the World Cup win in the Americas but were picked in the 15-man ODI squad for the Sri Lanka series, starting July 27.

Speaking highly of the most successful India pair in the past decade, Gautam said both could continue contributing to the team's success for a few more years. Keeping an eye on the upcoming schedule, including a busy home season followed by five Tests Down Under and then the Champions Trophy in February, Kohli and Rohit have plenty to look forward to and deliver on the big stage.

"I think they have shown what they can deliver on the big stage, whether it's the T20 World Cup or the 50-over World Cup as well," Gambhir said during his maiden presser as Team India’s head coach.

"One thing I can be very clear of is that both those guys have a lot of cricket left in them. More importantly, with the Champions Trophy [in 2025] and a big tour of Australia [in November 2024], obviously, they would be motivated enough. And then, hopefully, if they can keep their fitness, the 2027 [ODI] World Cup as well,” he continued.

Re-emphasising the importance of cricket being a team sport, Gautam said the decision to stick around till then remains personal to both and that any call made will be looking at the team's benefit.

"But this is a very personal decision. I can't say how much cricket is left in them. Ultimately, it's up to them as well, it's up to the players. How much can they contribute to the team's success because, ultimately, it's the team that is important.

"But looking at what Virat and Rohit can deliver, I think they still have a lot of cricket [left to play]. They're still world-class players, and obviously, any team would want to have both of them for as long as possible,” Gambhir continued.

Workload management

Rohit, 37, Kohli, 35, and Bumrah (Team India’s best bowler across formats) are three key players, and Gambhir believes managing their workload is in the best interest of Indian cricket.

"I've said it before, workload management for someone like Jasprit (Bumrah) is important. He is one rare bowler, which anyone would want. You want him to play important games. That's why the workload management for not just him but fast bowlers is important."

"If you are a batter, who's batting well, you might as well just play all formats. Rohit and Virat have retired from T20Is now, so they will play two formats from now. Hopefully, they are available for most of the games,” Gambhir said.

Virat, Rohit can play 2027 ODI World Cup if they stay fit: Gautam Gambhir

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Khalid Mahmood feels if BCCI denies sending Team India to Pakistan for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, other Asian countries like Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh could follow the same path. Due to the tense relations between India and Pakistan, the Indian Govt. might not send the team across the border for the eight-team tournament scheduled for February-March next year.

Per the latest reports, the BCCI has communicated their clear intentions to the PCB and the ICC, with the board putting out the same message during the ongoing ICC annual conference in Colombo, where the Champions Trophy venue was among the several agendas to be discussed.

Meanwhile, Mahmood said considering BCCI’s stance in world cricket and what they bring to the table, they can boss around and make things happen their way. He added that chances of India travelling to Pakistan are bleak, and if that happens and others also deny sending their teams, the PCB and the ICC could suffer massive losses regarding revenue, growth and profits.

Champions Trophy 2025: Ex-PCB head expects revenue, profits to hit if India decides against coming to Pakistan

Shubman Gill will thrive in his new role as the ODI vice-captain, feels former India batting coach Vikram Rathour. Soon after Gautam Gambhir replaced Rahul Dravid as Team India’s new head coach, the selectors decided to appoint Gill as Rohit’s deputy in the ODIs, which, to Vikram, is an excellent decision. Having watched Gill grow as a batter during his time with the Indian Team, Vikram explains how leadership will help Gill mature as a cricketer.

Following Hardik Pandya’s departure as Gujarat Titans captain ahead of this season, the franchise handpicked Gill to lead in IPL 2024. Though he missed out on getting picked for the T20 World Cup campaign in the Americas later, the BCCI named him the skipper of the recently concluded five-match T20Is against Zimbabwe, which India won 4-1.

Speaking to the Indian Express in an exclusive chat, Rathour explained how, by looking at Gill’s body language, he knew that the star batter would make a great captain one day.

“Whatever I have seen him, be it for the Gujarat Titans or in Zimbabwe (when Gill led in a T20 series), he did a good job. He has shown terrific body language, which is a must if you are leading a side. Now with the vice-captaincy, the BCCI has given him extra responsibility, and I am sure he will thrive in this role,” Rathour said in a chat with The Indian Express.

Confidence and game awareness – Gill’s USP

Detailing further on what made him believe that Gill has both confidence and game awareness, Rathour recalled an instance ahead of the England Tests earlier this year, when Gill approached the leadership group to take up the number three role willingly. Although he was out of touch, having failed to score a fifty in the past 12 innings in the lead-up to that, Gill slammed a stunning hundred in the second innings of the Vizag Test.

“The talk came from him. He felt that No 3 was an ideal position for him to bat, and the management group backed him. It was his decision, which was backed by Rahul, myself and Rohit, and he turned it around in the England series,” Rathour continued.

The former batting coach also shared what he thought of Gill when he first saw him bat in the nets.

“When I first saw him in the nets, my first impression was like everybody else’s. I saw exactly what a lot of people were talking about and spoke about his special talent. When the first time I saw him playing, the immediate thought that went into my mind was ‘Whoa this kid is extremely talented’.

“What impressed me the most was his game awareness, which is something you don’t generally see in the young cricketers, who are coming through the ranks. He knew his game, he understood how he needed to bat in different situations and never shied away from challenges,” Rathour added.

Ace India all-rounder Hardik Pandya is not an automatic pick in the ODIs if he fails to pass the bowling fitness test in the 50-over format, per the selectors. A T20 WC winner, Pandya has impressed one and all with his performance in four-over spells; however, his absence from the ODIs and inability to complete ten overs in that format has kept the selectors worried.

Mohammed Shami is one of India’s best all-format bowlers and perhaps the most successful in the 50-over World Cups. However, despite star performances across the past two editions (2019 and 2023), wherein he picked 38 wickets in just 11 matches, including several five-fors and a seven-wicket haul in the semis last year, Shami questioned Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri's tactics during the 2019 edition.

Recalling the decisions made by the captain and the coach during the 2019 World Cup in England, Shami said despite picking a hat-trick (against Afghanistan) and ten more wickets in the remaining three games that he played, he got dropped from the playing XI from the final league game (against Sri Lanka) and subsequently against New Zealand (in the semis), which India lost and got knocked out of the tournament.

Speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube show, ‘Unplugged,’ Shami sounded clueless about management’s call over his selection in the XI.

Meanwhile, much like last year when he got a chance after the first four matches, Shami suffered the same fate during the 2019 edition, wherein he got picked for the first time during the mid-tournament.

“In 2019, I did not play the first 4-5 games. In the next game, I took a hat-trick, then picked up a five-wicket haul and then four wickets in the next game. A similar happened in 2023. I did not play in the first few games and then picked a fifer, then four wickets and then a five-wicket haul again,” Shami said during the show.

“You gave me a chance, and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. I played four matches overall and picked 14 wickets. In 2023, I picked 24 wickets in seven matches,” the India ace seamer added.

Shami prepares for comeback

Out with an ankle injury he suffered during the 2023 World Cup, seamer Shami aims to return to the cricket field during the upcoming home season, starting with Bangladesh Tests in September.

Suryakumar Yadav reflects on T20I captaincy appointment - ‘Last few weeks have been nothing short of dream’

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra made heads turn with his comments on Virat Kohli in a recent interaction. During a chat show on YouTube, the ex-leg spinner stated Kohli isn't the same person and has changed a lot since gaining fame and power whereas Rohit Sharma remains unchanged. His remark on Kohli went viral but now former Indian opener Robin Uthappa has hailed Kohli's evolution from a brash young Delhi boy to an evolved human being.

Speaking on cricket.com/tv, Uthappa said, "I have actually seen Virat kind of evolve from a brash young Delhi boy to an evolved human being. You know the evolution has been quite tremendous, to be honest. Today he's practically reaping what he had sown 15 years ago."

"One of the things that has always stood out to me about Cheeku has been his conviction in himself. When I listen to a young 19-year-old Virat Kohli, you know talking about himself or his conviction in himself, you'll get mortified, you'll be like 'What is this dude talking about?'. Today he's practically reaping what he had sown 15 years ago." "One of the things that has always stood out to me about Cheeku has been his conviction in himself. When I listen to a young 19-year-old Virat Kohli, you know talking about himself or his conviction in himself, you'll get mortified, you'll be like 'What is this dude talking about?'.
India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar have spoken to Hardik Pandya and informed the all-rounder about the last-minute change in T20I captaincy as Suryakumar Yadav is set to become the new skipper, as per reports. According to news agency PTI, Gambhir and Agarkar had a word with Hardik -- who has served as India's stand-in captain in the recent past and was also the vice-captain during the 2024 T20 World Cup -- that they are looking for a full-time captain, keeping in view with 2026 T20 World Cup. Gambhir, Agarkar inform Hardik about last-minute captaincy change as Surya to be India's T20I captain: Report

Will India's cricket body BCCI take over the running of eductech firm Byju's? The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) on Tuesday (July 16) admitted a plea from the Board of Control for Cricket in India seeking insolvency proceedings against Byju's. If the insolvency comes through, at least in theory BCCI, can take control of the company along with other creditors, which if it happens will be a rare occurrence.

What did the NCLT say?

The NCLT in Bengaluru ruled that Byju's had defaulted on a debt to BCCI over the Indian cricket team's jersey sponsorship deals. The debt works out to around 1.58 billion rupees ($18.9 million). Byju's had sought arbitration on the issue, which NCLT rejected.

What is BCCI's connection to Byju's?

BCCI and Byju's entered into a jersey sponsorship deal in 2019. Earlier the jersey sponsorship was with Chinese mobile phone firm Oppo.

The contract with Byju's was till 2022 and then renewed for 2023.

Amid a worsening financial turmoil, Byju's said in January 2023 that it would not extend sponsorship deals with BCCI, International Cricket Council (ICC) and Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA).

BCCI filed an insolvency petition against Byju's in the same year with NCLT, which sought a response from the edutech firm in November 2023.

What was Byju's argument against insolvency proceedings?

Byju's lawyers insisted that BCCI could not be considered an 'operational creditor' as their deal was not for services, but for the transfer of some rights.

Byju's also claimed that BCCI could not prove a debt default, and cited other disputes with the cricket body that could prevent the Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process or CIRP, a recovery mechanism for corporates, from taking place.

What did NCLT rule on Byju's debt to BCCI?

In its order on Tuesday, the NCLT rejected the pleas by Byju's, citing email communication between the parties that established that Byju's owed money to BCCI.

"The Respondent herein has time and again acknowledged and duly planned a repayment schedule for the outstanding dues by sending the above mentioned emails," NCLT said in its order. "The condition of there being a ‘debt’ and a ‘default’ for the purposes of Section 9 of the IBC is held to be satisfied," the NCLT said, referring to the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) of 2016.

Will BCCI take over Byju's? Company law panel admits plea for insolvency of edutech firm

Rohit Sharma-led India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, beating South Africa by 7 runs in an epic final at the Kensington Oval, Barbados on June 29. Opting to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's 76, Axar Patel's 47 and Shivam Dube's 27 to post 176/7 but Heinrich Klaasen's blazing knock (52) made it a one-sided battle with the Proteas needing just 30 off the last five overs, which was down to 27 off 28 balls. However, India's death-bowling heroics (led by Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya and Arshdeep Singh) took them to a famous win, restricting Aiden Markam & Co to 169/8, as they ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought and won their second T20 WC title.

Recently, Indian captain Rohit -- who announced his T20I retirement post the T20 WC triumph -- revealed his thought process during the last overs' drama in Barbados. At an event in Dallas, Hitman admitted being 'blank''.

He said, "Yes, I was completely blank. I don't look too far ahead. 'I was completely...': Rohit Sharma recalls last overs' drama during India's T20 WC final win vs South Africa

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra made a sensational claim, in a recent interaction, while comparing Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The wily spinner claimed that Kohli changed a lot after gaining fame and power in his career whereas Rohit, under whom India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, remains the same person. Both Kohli and Rohit debuted around the same time, with the former coming into the picture in 2008 and Hitman making his debut a year before. Kohli rose to fame much earlier and got captaincy in early 2015 when MS Dhoni retired from Tests. He became the all-format skipper in 2017 before Rohit took over the reins in early 2022 (as full-time captain).

'Why does Virat have less friends? His and Rohit's natures are different'

Mishra, a veteran of 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is, played with both Kohli and Rohit and also under the former's captaincy. While speaking to YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra on his show, the ex-cricketer drew comparisons between Kohli and Rohit's nature. He revealed, "I won't lie. As a cricketer, I respect him (Kohli) a lot, but I don't share the same equation with him as I used to. Why does Virat have less friends? His and Rohit's natures are different. I'll tell you the best thing about Rohit. When I met him the first day and when I meet him today, he is the same person. So will you relate to him more or with someone who changes according to situation?"

Whenever he meets me, he is very respectful, but it's obviously not the same anymore."

Recently, both Kohli and Rohit retired from T20Is after India's T20 WC triumph, in West Indies and the USA. Currently, both are expected to be out of cricketing action and will miss the forthcoming India tour of Sri Lanka, where Gautam Gambhir will take over as the head coach. Ageing Rohit ‘going nowhere’ as India veteran shuts retirement talks - WATCH

Former Indian stumper Saba Karim suggested two names who could be India's next T20I captain. After India won the 2024 T20 World Cup, held in West Indies and the USA, captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement, along with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, from the shortest format. Thus, India have now embarked upon a new era post Rohit's retirement. With India set to kickoff their white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, from July 27 under new head coach Gautam Gambhir, there are chances that the BCCI will announce India's new permanent T20I skipper.

With many names being considered, Karim named Hardik Pandya -- who acted as Rohit's deputy in the last two World Cups (both ODI and T20I) -- and Suryakumar Yadav as his top-two choices.

'Logically, Hardik Pandya should become the captain'

Talking on Sony Sports, the former Indian stumper said, "The first thing that needs to be decided is who will captain in T20Is. Rohit Sharma has retired, he won't play T20Is. So you will have a new captain. I feel there are two contenders. If we see logically, Hardik Pandya should become the captain because he was the vice-captain in the winning World Cup campaign. He also captained India in the past. I feel the preparation now should be for the next T20 World Cup which is going to happen after two years."

He further opined, "I feel the discussion should be about SKY because Suryakumar Yadav captained India in the home series against Australia. India defeated Australia there and he also batted well. So he can definitely come forward as an option." Karim added, "If the selectors feel Hardik Pandya has played a fantastic role and can do the same as a captain as well, he can definitely be the ideal candidate. So I feel these are the two contenders."

A second-stringed Team India, under Shubman Gill, ended their five-match T20I series versus Zimbabwe, in the African nation, on Sunday (July 14). However, it seems highly unlikely that Gill's name will be in discussions, given he led in the absence of many senior players.

As Hardik has been Rohit's deputy in white-ball cricket since early 2023, it is likely that the all-rounder will take over in T20Is. He has led India in 16 T20Is, winning 10, during Rohit's sabbatical post 2022 T20 WC, which ended in early 2024. In addition, he had a good run in the 2024 T20 WC, managing 144 runs and claiming 11 wickets.

Hardik, Surya, Bumrah? Who will be India's next T20I captain? Former Indian stumper suggests two names

The Indian Cricket Team is on top of its prowess, having recently won the T20 World Cup in the Americas, and even though they haven’t won an ICC title in 50-over cricket in over a decade, their domination in the white-ball cricket in the past many years speaks for itself. With the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan next in line, the chances of the Indian government denying permission to send the team across the border are high and could have repercussions. So, what will happen if Team India pulls out of the eight-team tournament in Pakistan next year?

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is preparing for next year’s Champions Trophy in full flow, with several reports suggesting that they have even submitted the draft schedule with potential groups to the ICC and all participating members. With the apex body (ICC) also working in tandem with the PCB, it appears like the competition might go ahead at the original venue.

However, considering the tense political relations between India and Pakistan, neither the ruling government nor the BCCI have communicated any word on sending the team to Pakistan for the tournament.

Although the latest reports reveal that BCCI officials will speak to ICC on the change in venue to Dubai or Sri Lanka during the next annual conference, if the opposite happens and ICC decides against doing it, Team India could face some repercussions.

“In the case of the Champions Trophy, we will do whatever the Government of India will tell us to do. We send our team only when the Government of India permits us to do so. So, we will go according to the decision of the Indian government,” BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla said, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.

What will happen if Team India pulls out of CT 2025?

If the BCCI remains firm on its stance of not allowing Team India to travel to Pakistan (and the venues remain the same), they will be disqualified from participating, making Sri Lanka eligible to replace them.

Per previous reports, India was placed in Group A alongside the hosts Pakistan, Bangladesh and New Zealand. The remaining four teams – Afghanistan, England, Australia and South Africa are drawn in Group B.

Besides, per the draft schedule submitted to the ICC and the BCCI, Team India will play their matches at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, including the semis and final, should they qualify.

ALSO READ: Shaheen Afridi misbehaved with batting coach ahead of T20 WC, reports suggest this was in 'heat of the moment' However, considering the tense political relations between India and Pakistan, neither the ruling government nor the BCCI have communicated any word on sending the team to Pakistan for the tournament. The marquee India vs Pakistan game is scheduled for March 1 in Lahore. (With inputs from agencies)

Newly appointed Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir sticks to his demand of having the backroom staff of his choice. Shortly after BCCI replaced Rahul Dravid with him for the top position in Indian cricket, Gautam proposed a few names for the respective roles in his coaching panel.

After several reports did rounds that the BCCI rejected Gambhir’s plea of appointing domestic giant Vinay Kumar as the bowling coach, Gautam proposed former Protean seamer Morne Morkel’s name for the same, with the BCCI yet to take any call on this.

Gautam Gambhir urges BCCI to consider Morne Morkel for bowling coach role – Reports

Gautam Gambhir shared a clear and bold message for Team India after his appointment as head coach. The former Indian opener stressed on the importance of playing all three formats with a focus on injury and workload management. He made it clear that players would need to do the right thing in the best interest of the team. On Tuesday (Jul 9), BCCI named Gambhir as Rahul Dravid's successor, who signed off with India's T20 World Cup win last month.

'You should be playing all the three formats'

In a video posted by Star Sports, Gambhir said, "Injuries are part of sportsmen's life. And if you are playing all the three formats, you get injured, you go back and get recovered but you should be playing all the three formats. I am not a big believer to identify people that okay we are going to keep him for Test matches and we are going to keep him and we are going to manage his injury and workload and stuff."

He further opined, "Look professional cricketers, you got a very small span. When you are playing for your country you want to play as much as you can. When you are in very good form, go ahead and play all the three formats."

'There's only one message to try and play with honesty'

Gambhir pointed out, "There's only one message to try and play with honesty. Try and be as honest as you can to a profession. All the results will follow. When I picked up the bat, I never thought of the results. I never thought that I'm going to. I want to score these many runs. I've always believed that I have to be as honest as I can to my profession. Live on certain principles, live on certain values, try and do the right things, and try and do things, even if you think the whole world is against you. But your heart believes that you're doing the right thing for the best interest of team."

He added, "Whether I've been aggressive on the cricket field, whether I've had confrontations with people, just because it was all in the best interest of the team. Try and do that because, ultimately, it's the team that matters, not an individual. So go out there and only think of one thing to try and make your team win whichever team you play for. Because that is what team sports demand. It is not an individual sport where you think about your own self. It is a team sport where it is the team that comes first, you're probably the last one that comes in the entire line up."

Gambhir will take over with the commencement of India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting on July 27. India will play three T20Is and ODIs each in the Island nation before they return home for their upcoming home season.

Under Gambhir, who has been appointed till 2027 ODI World Cup, India will look to add to their ICC titles. They are set to compete in, at least, two WTC finals and play both the World Cups once. In addition, the Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held, in Pakistan, early next year.

With the end of his term, he also fulfilled his dreams of lifting a World Cup; something he failed to achieve during his playing days. And the way he celebrated lifting the trophy showed how much it meant to each one of them," VVS Laxman said in a video for the BCCI from Harare.
