'If Gambhir is taking up...': Kapil Dev reacts as new head coach's era begin

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev reacted to Gautam Gambhir's appointment as the Indian team's head coach. Gambhir was appointed head coach by the BCCI early this month and the former Indian opener will hold the post until the 2027 ODI World Cup. Ahead of Gambhir's first assignment as coach, i.e. India's white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, Kapil wished him and the Indian players 'all the best'.

'I hope they do better than what we have done previously'

Talking to news agencyPTI, on the sidelines of the 2nd edition of the Trinity Golf ChampionsLeague in New Delhi, Kapil said, "If Gautam Gambhir is taking up that post (of head coach of the Indian cricket team), I wish good luck to him and the team. I hope they do better than what we have done previously. I want to wish the Indian players all the best."

Under Gambhir, India have a task to add to their ICC titles. Rohit Sharma-led India ended their 11-year-long ICC title drought by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and the USA, last month, however, Gambhir will want to take Indian cricket forward in terms of more success in ICC events. During his tenure, India will play both the World Cups (ODI and T20I), the Champions Trophy and can compete in, at least, two WTC finals.

Gambhir is taking over from Rahul Dravid, under whom India won the T20 WC, Asia Cup (ODIs) and ended as runners-up in both the WTC final and the ODI World Cup last year.

Gambhir's first assignment as the India coach will be the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, starting July 27. The Men in Blue will play three T20Is and ODIs each in the Island nation.
