Team India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, will resume work from the Sri Lanka tour (later in July). Replacing Rahul Dravid for the top post in Indian Cricket, Gambhir will have plenty riding on his shoulders as he gears up for a three-and-a-half-year tenure. Knowing the pressure that comes with his job, the perks are also in abundance.

“It is an absolute honour to serve my tri-colour, my people, my country," Gambhir said in a BCCI statement.

Meanwhile, apart from holding perhaps the ‘toughest position in world cricket’, as previously echoed by Justin Langer when BCCI approached him for the same, Gambhir would enjoy countless benefits of becoming Team India’s head coach.
Here, we look at all the perks Gautam Gambhir would have till he remains the India head coach.

Perks and benefits of being Team India head coach

Per the latest reports, the BCCI delayed Gautam’s appointment announcement due to salary negotiations. Considering Rahul Dravid was drawing a salary of $1.2 million yearly (INR 12 crore) as Team India's head coach, Gautam would earn more. Besides this, Gautam is entitled to several other perks.

In 2019, the Indian Cricket Board revised its daily allowance policy, entitling the coach to earn $250 (nearly Rs 21,000) daily - double the previous amount, while on an away tour. Outside of this, the BCCI will cover Gambhir’s business class travel, accommodation and laundry expenses.

The former opener will also get world-class travel experience and accommodation while on national duty.

New backroom staff

One of the five conditions he kept in front of the board before accepting the offer, was that Gambhir would like to have the backroom staff of his choice.

Several reports suggest that Abhishek Nayar (batting coach), Vinay Kumar (bowling coach) and Netherland’s Ryan ten Doeschate are the ones Gambhir wants in his backroom staff.

The BCCI is said to be working on negotiating with everyone mentioned.

MUST-READ! Gautam Gambhir shares special message for predecessor Rahul Dravid after becoming India coach

Outgoing Team India head coach Rahul Dravid won hearts by declining the INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) extra bonus awarded by the BCCI for Rohit Sharma & Co.'s T20 World Cup triumph, in Barbados on June 29. The former Indian captain, who has been succeeded by Gautam Gambhir as the head coach, took the decision to ensure all the members of the support staff were equally rewarded with the bonus prize money.

Notably, the BCCI had announced a whopping INR 125 crore (INR 1250 million) for Team India members, including the players and support staff, for their historic unbeaten run in the recently-held T20 WC 2024 edition, in West Indies and the USA (where they beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final). While India's main squad, of 15 players, and coach Dravid were rewarded INR 15 crore (INR 150 million) each, the latter's support staff (comprising bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, batting coach Vikram Rathour and fielding coach T Dilip) were given INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) each. However, Dravid has called for him to be rewarded equally with his support staff members.

A BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times, "Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments."

It is to be noted that this isn't the first time when Dravid came up with such a heartfelt gesture. After Prithvi Shaw-led India won the 2018 U-19 World Cup, in New Zealand, the then coach Dravid was rewarded INR 50 lakh (INR 5 million) prize money, compared to INR 20 lakh (INR 2 million) for other members of his team. Back then, he asked the board to divide the money equally with his coaching staff, which was readily agreed.

Apart from the main squad, Dravid-led coaching staff, even the reserve players have been rewarded with INR 1 crore (INR 10 million) each whereas the backroom staff have been given INR 2 crore (INR 20 million) per head for India's second T20 WC win.

Rahul Dravid DECLINES extra bonus, wants BCCI to pay all coaches EQUALLY for T20 WC triumph

On Tuesday (July 9), Indian captain Rohit Sharma shared an emotional post for outgoing head coach Rahul Dravid after India's historic T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, in West Indies and the USA. After India beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final of the 20-nation mega event, in Barbados on June 29, Dravid's coaching tenure -- which commenced in late 2021 -- came to a fitting end. For someone who never won a World Cup as a player, Dravid's dream finally got fulfilled, albeit as a coach of the senior men's team. Thus, Rohit took to his official Instagram handle to write a lengthy note, thanking Dravid for his services in a heartfelt note.

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach'

Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt."

He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. You are an absolute stalwart of this game but you left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach and came on a level where we all felt comfortable enough to say just about anything to you. That is your gift, your humility and your love for this game even after all this time. I have learnt so much from you and every memory will be cherished. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too."

'You left all of your accolades and achievements at the door and walked in as our coach' Rohit wrote, "Dear Rahul bhai, I have been trying to find the right words to properly express my feelings on this but I'm not sure I ever will so here's my attempt." He further opined, "Since my childhood days I have looked up to you just like billions of others but I was lucky enough to get to work with you this closely. My wife refers to you as my work wife and I'm lucky to get to call you that too." 'Only thing missing...' - Rohit Sharma's FAREWELL note for outgoing coach Rahul Dravid after T20 WC win

Rahul Dravid received a hero's welcome and a guard of honour from young kids at a local cricket academy in Bengaluru after India's historic T20 World Cup triumph. Under Dravid's coaching, Rohit Sharma-led India won the recently-concluded T20 WC 2024 edition, held in West Indies and the USA. It was Dravid's last assignment as India head coach, since taking over in late 2021. Following India's T20 WC run, where they were unbeaten in the 20-nation mega event, Dravid-led support staff and Rohit-led national side have been receiving roaring response from the countrymen. The clip of Dravid's recent welcome at a cricket academy went viral.

'If it's in my arc...': Abhishek Sharma reveals batting mantra after magnificent 100 in Ind vs Zim 2nd T20I

Abhishek Sharma was all over the news for his record-equalling third-fastest T20I hundred for India against Zimbabwe on Sunday (Jul 7) in Harare; however, the mantra to his success is far from what was on display. During a chat on bcci.tv after the game, Abhishek revealed he borrowed Captain Shubman Gill’s bat for this game, and that did wonders for the opener, though not for the first time.

ZIM v IND: Harare hero Abhishek Sharma on using Gill’s bat - ‘I score every time when I play with it'

Jay Shah, BCCI secretary and the ‘most powerful man in world cricket’, as echoed by MCC President Mark Nicholas, is undecided on becoming the next ICC chairman despite strong rumours favouring him. Per the latest reports, Shah is looking forward to the annual Conference in Colombo from July 19 to 22. Following the date announcement, Shah has around three months to decide on his future.

Enjoying his role as a top-tier administrator in the world’s richest cricket board, Shah has been non-committal about his intentions of replacing New Zealand’s Greg Barclay as the new ICC chairman in November this year. Meanwhile, Barclay had Shah’s backing during the election for the coveted post four years ago.

Barclay is eligible for another term and would be interested in continuing in the job, but if Shah decides to contest the elections, he is sure of getting elected unopposed. If that happens, Shah will become the youngest ICC chairman.

Recently, the ICC brought in some changes to the chairman’s tenure, altering it from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. Upon being elected, Shah will chair the ICC for the next three years till 2027, becoming eligible to contest for BCCI’s presidency in 2028.

Meanwhile, the international media is talking about Shah taking over the ICC and, eventually, world cricket under his wraps. There were also reports of Shah wanting to shift the ICC headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai, with the latest reports squashing this, saying Shah has nothing on these lines on his agenda.

But the BCCI secretary is willing to bring changes to the ICC after what unfolded during the chaotic conduct of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. At the annual conference later this month, a formal announcement on the election's date will be announced.

Team India’s stand-in captain for the Zimbabwe T20Is, Shubman Gill, said no cricket for the players in the lead-up to this series resulted in a shocking loss in the first game as the hosts beat India by 13 runs to take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. Cricket fever hits Hollywood as ‘Wolverine’ Hugh Jackman names Rohit Sharma his favourite Indian player

Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar has slammed the critics of BCCI secretary Jay Shah, saying ‘political agendas’ stop them from praising Shah for his efforts as the board’s administrator. Gavaskar said since Jay Shah happens to be India’s Home Minister, Amit Shah’s son, people hesitate to credit him for lifting Indian cricket to the position it enjoys in world cricket today.

Gavaskar said Shah has played a significant role in the growth of Indian cricket, including ensuring equal pay for men’s and women’s teams, the launching of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and much more.

Shah began his career in cricket administration with his stint at Gujarat Cricket Association before joining BCCI in 2015. After four years, in 2019, Shah was elected as the board’s secretary, taking the onus of Indian cricket into his hands and delivering since. Shah is also the Asian Cricket Council’s (ACC) President, responsible for the cricket operations in the Southeast Asian region.

Speaking to India Today, Gavaskar said he has always appreciated Shah’s work as an administrator as it helped promote cricket, not just Indian cricket, over the years. He didn’t mince words in admitting that differences in political opinions have restrained fans from giving due credit to Jay Shah for his ‘outstanding work’.

“From my experience, those who genuinely love cricket often do more for Indian cricket than those who have played it. This might be surprising, but people who are passionate about the game, even if they haven’t played at the highest level, tend to contribute more effectively when guided properly. Conversely, some former players sometimes remain fixated on their era, resisting changes that benefit the current generation,” Gavaskar said.

“So, I believe that while former cricketers are invaluable for addressing technical issues—like game rules and improving the Ranji Trophy’s competitiveness—the administration and financial management should be left to the experts,” he continued.

“As a coach, at the end of the day, my job is to help the captain deliver his vision, his philosophy of how he wants the team to play,” Dravid said. “I don’t really like talking more about results. Yes, results are important. I am in a business that runs on results.

“I think results are the factor of many things. When you are constantly rotating players and the kind of number of players you will have to play in spite of that the kind of results we got in these past months have given me more satisfaction,” he continued.

The Player of the Match in the final, Virat Kohli, missed out on the cut, but six other Indian players made it to the ICC’s team of the tournament for the recently-concluded 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. Besides the Indians, the XI includes three players from Afghanistan and one each from the co-hosts West Indies and Australia, with South African seamer Anrich Nortje being named the 12th man.

India beat South Africa in the final on Saturday (Jun 29) by seven runs to lift the 2024 T20 World Cup for the second time. Led by Rohit Sharma, the Men in Blue won the tournament without facing defeat, becoming the first team to achieve this feat in this competition.

Besides, Afghanistan’s rise to the top, with them beating heavyweights like New Zealand and Australia and reaching the semis for the first time, was rewarded with three players making it to the list.

Six Indians, including Captain Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, were named on the list, with Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav and Rishabh Pant being notable absentees.

While Rohit Sharma was the second-highest run-getter, scoring 257 runs in eight outings at a strike rate of 156.7, his partner would be the tournament’s top batter from Afghanistan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who hit 281 runs.

India’s star performer in the clutch games, including against England and Australia in the semis and final, respectively, Axar Patel, also made the cut. Afghanistan Captain Rashid Khan, who guided his team to their maiden final four in an ICC tournament, is also picked.

"Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, intensified into a 'very dangerous' Category 3 storm on Sunday morning as it churned toward Barbados and the Windward Islands, promising destructive hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge, according to the National Hurricane Center," CNN reported earlier.

After their second T20 World Cup triumph on Saturday (June 29) against the Proteas, the Indian Team and the staff planned to depart straight home via a charter (from the USA).
On this occasion, Shah addressed the team’s success, saying this winning team embodies a vibrant and resilient India. He also credited BCCI’s role in identifying and nurturing the right talent at the right time, leading to the team taking home the honours.

“This team truly embodies a rising, vibrant, and resilient India, asserting its rightful place in the world of cricket. I am delighted that, as the governing body of the sport in India, the BCCI has played a part in this team's success through our relentless focus on identifying, grooming, and nurturing the right talent,” Shah said in Barbados, as quoted by Cricbuzz.

“Under the exceptional leadership of Rohit Sharma, this team has shown remarkable resolve and resilience, becoming the first team in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup to win the tournament unbeaten.

“They have faced and silenced their critics with stellar performances time and again. Their journey has been nothing short of inspirational. Led by Rohit Sharma, and ably assisted by Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and others they have fulfilled the dreams and aspirations of 1.4 billion Indians,” he concluded.

Team India and media from India stuck in Barbados as all flights cancelled. pic.twitter.com/j9OvGWp0Ot — ANI (@ANI) July 1, 2024 × "Beryl, the first hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic season, intensified into a 'very dangerous' Category 3 storm on Sunday morning as it churned toward Barbados and the Windward Islands, promising destructive hurricane-force winds and life-threatening storm surge, according to the National Hurricane Center," CNN reported earlier. After their second T20 World Cup triumph on Saturday (June 29) against the Proteas, the Indian Team and the staff planned to depart straight home via a charter (from the USA). But because of the hurricane warning on Sunday evening, due to which the airport got shut down, they were left stranded in their hotel. The South African Team left Barbados earlier on Sunday. ALSO READ: 'I let myself down...,' says Virat Kohli after helping India win 2024 T20 World Cup The BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, also stranded in Barbados, commented on the matter, saying once the team gets travel clearance, they will fly home, where the BCCI will felicitate the winning unit. "Like you, we are also stuck here. After the travel plans are clear, we will think about the felicitation," Shah told reporters in Barbados. Team India’s plan upon landing in India Per the itinerary, the Indian Team will fly to New Delhi to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The PM also called up the Indian squad after their T20 WC triumph, speaking with Captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and outgoing Coach Rahul Dravid. (With inputs from agencies)

Indian Team stranded in Barbados after T20 WC win as hurricane warning shuts airport

It’s always fun when two different sports meet – this time it's cricket and WWE.

Moments after leading India to its second T20 World Cup title in Barbados, Captain Rohit Sharma did an iconic slow walk towards the podium before collecting the trophy and celebrating with the team. That, however, reminded everyone of WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair, who used to walk similarly during his in-ring matches. A day after the video went viral, Flair reacted to it on his social media handle.

Taking to his Instagram handle, Ric posted, "@rohitsharma45 Taking A Page Out Of My Playbook! WOOOOO!"

Meanwhile, for those who watched the moment closely, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the one who suggested Rohit does ‘Ric Flair’ while picking up the T20 World Cup trophy. Although he shrugged it off at that moment, Rohit surprised the cricket world with that when the moment came. The fans in attendance and billions watching on the TV cherished the moment.

Rohit says goodbye to T20Is

The veteran batter Rohit Sharma announced his T20I retirement following the conclusion of the T20 World Cup Final against South Africa, which India won by seven runs. He retired as the highest run-getter (4231) in the format, with five centuries – the most by any batter in T20Is. With the win in Barbados, Rohit became the first Indian cricketer to win two T20 World Cups – 2007 in South Africa and 2024 in West Indies.

Alongside Rohit, two other players, including batting great Virat Kohli and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, also announced their decisions to step aside from T20Is.

While Virat’s numbers in this format need no introduction, given how big a match-winner he’s been, Jadeja bows out as one of the finest the game has seen. The ace all-rounder had several handy outings to recall in his glorious career, with his ground fielding and rocket throws being his trump cards.

What’s next for Team India?

Following the conclusion of the 20-team-tournament in the Americas, Team India will fly to Zimbabwe for five T20Is starting July 6, with Shubman Gill named stand-in captain for the tour.

In the absence of a head coach, with Rahul Dravid departing, NCA chief VVS Laxman will fill in his place. A new head coach, yet to be named, will take over the reins from the Sri Lanka white-ball tour later in the month.

As per reports, former India opener and two-time World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir is leading the race to replace Dravid.

WOOOOO!" View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ric Flair® Nature Boy® (@ricflairnatureboy) × Meanwhile, for those who watched the moment closely, India spinner Kuldeep Yadav was the one who suggested Rohit does ‘Ric Flair’ while picking up the T20 World Cup trophy. Although he shrugged it off at that moment, Rohit surprised the cricket world with that when the moment came. The fans in attendance and billions watching on the TV cherished the moment. Ravindra Jadeja announces retirement from T20Is after India’s World Cup victory

Indian men's cricket team head coach Rahul Dravid was in a jovial mood after the Men-in-Blue lifted the T20 World Cup trophy after a long, 17-year wait on Saturday (Jun 29). Dravid, who endured a painful exit from the 50-over World Cup in the Caribbean in 2007 had a 'life-coming-full-circle' moment for him as India exorcised its demons in the ICC tournaments in Barbados.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Dravid joked that he was unemployed from the next week and if there were any offers.

Quizzed if he will be able to move on from the massive win, Dravid quipped: "Yeah, I will be. I mean, next week life will be same for me. I'll be unemployed, that'll be the only difference."

Responding to laughing journalists, he added, "Any offers?"

‘I’ll be unemployed’ - Rahul Dravid jokingly seeks job offers post T20 World Cup win | WATCH

The two most iconic moments for India in the World Cups were Kapil Dev’s running catch to dismiss Viv Richards during the 1983 World Cup final and MS Dhoni's six off SL's Nuwan Kulasekera to win the 50-over WC in the 2011 final. But now since Suryakumar Yadav has pulled off a screamer in the thriller against South Africa in Barbados, it seems the Indian fans have another moment to cherish in a winning campaign.

India beat Proteas by seven runs in the T20 World Cup final on Saturday (June 29) to lift the trophy for the second time – joint-most with West Indies and England, and Suryakumar Yadav has a massive role to play in that.

Though not entirely for his batting in the final, his stunner to dismiss David Miller, which put India in the winning position, will be the one to be talked about for a long time.

ALSO READ: Emotional Hardik Pandya breaks down after T20 WC win against South Africa, says ‘I kept quiet for 6 months’

With South Africa needing 16 off the final over and Miller on the strike, SKY’s catch to dismiss him was the game-changing moment for Team India. That, however, reminded everyone of another instance where a catch turned out to be the decisive factor in a World Cup final. Yes, we are talking about the extraordinary catch by Kapil Dev in 1983.

Similarity between the catches

Like how India batted first in a World Cup final the other night, the Indian Team did the same 41 years ago against the defending champions West Indies.

Defending a modest total of 183, WI’s star batter Richards was on the rampage, scoring at over run-a-ball. India needed his wicket to stay in the game, and Captain Kapil Dev took it upon himself to contribute.

Off Madan Lal’s bowling, Viv top-edged one to the leg side, and Kapil Dev, standing on the square leg, ran towards the boundary and grabbed a stunning catch to get rid of him. That moment broke West Indies’ momentum as they got all out on 140 and lost the final.

Fast forward four decades, India needed such an effort from someone on the field, and SKY raised his hands to get the job done. And boy, what an effort that was! Massive in every context of the game.
With India completing a double in ODI and T20 WCs, they are the second team alongside West Indies to have four world titles, with Australia leading the race with seven to their name.

That, however, reminded everyone of another instance where a catch turned out to be the decisive factor in a World Cup final. Yes, we are talking about the extraordinary catch by Kapil Dev in 1983.
