Dravid DECLINES extra bonus, wants BCCI to pay coaches EQUALLY for T20 WC win
Outgoing Team India head coach Rahul Dravid won hearts by declining the INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) extra bonus awarded by the BCCI for Rohit Sharma & Co.'s T20 World Cup triumph, in Barbados on June 29. The former Indian captain, who has been succeeded by Gautam Gambhir as the head coach, took the decision to ensure all the members of the support staff were equally rewarded with the bonus prize money.
Notably, the BCCI had announced a whopping INR 125 crore (INR 1250 million) for Team India members, including the players and support staff, for their historic unbeaten run in the recently-held T20 WC 2024 edition, in West Indies and the USA (where they beat South Africa by 7 runs in the final). While India's main squad, of 15 players, and coach Dravid were rewarded INR 15 crore (INR 150 million) each, the latter's support staff (comprising bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, batting coach Vikram Rathour and fielding coach T Dilip) were given INR 2.5 crore (INR 25 million) each. However, Dravid has called for him to be rewarded equally with his support staff members.
A BCCI source was quoted as saying by the Hindustan Times, "Rahul wanted the same bonus money (Rs 2.5 crore) as the rest of his support staff (bowling coach Paras Mhambrey, fielding coach T Dilip, and batting coach Vikram Rathore). We respect his sentiments."
It is to be noted that this isn't the first time when Dravid came up with such a heartfelt gesture. After Prithvi Shaw-led India won the 2018 U-19 World Cup, in New Zealand, the then coach Dravid was rewarded INR 50 lakh (INR 5 million) prize money, compared to INR 20 lakh (INR 2 million) for other members of his team. Back then, he asked the board to divide the money equally with his coaching staff, which was readily agreed.
Apart from the main squad, Dravid-led coaching staff, even the reserve players have been rewarded with INR 1 crore (INR 10 million) each whereas the backroom staff have been given INR 2 crore (INR 20 million) per head for India's second T20 WC win.

Meanwhile, BCCI, on Tuesday (July 9), announced Gambhir asthe new senior men's team head coach. He will take over from the upcoming white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled to kick off later this month.
