BCCI Secretary Jay Shah likely to contest ICC Chairman elections after Greg Barclay withdraws
Jay Shah, BCCI secretary and the ‘most powerful man in world cricket’, as echoed by MCC President Mark Nicholas, is undecided on becoming the next ICC chairman despite strong rumours favouring him. Per the latest reports, Shah is looking forward to the annual Conference in Colombo from July 19 to 22. Following the date announcement, Shah has around three months to decide on his future.
Enjoying his role as a top-tier administrator in the world’s richest cricket board, Shah has been non-committal about his intentions of replacing New Zealand’s Greg Barclay as the new ICC chairman in November this year. Meanwhile, Barclay had Shah’s backing during the election for the coveted post four years ago.
Barclay is eligible for another term and would be interested in continuing in the job, but if Shah decides to contest the elections, he is sure of getting elected unopposed. If that happens, Shah will become the youngest ICC chairman.

Recently, the ICC brought in some changes to the chairman’s tenure, altering it from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years each. Upon being elected, Shah will chair the ICC for the next three years till 2027, becoming eligible to contest for BCCI’s presidency in 2028.
Meanwhile, the international media is talking about Shah taking over the ICC and, eventually, world cricket under his wraps. There were also reports of Shah wanting to shift the ICC headquarters from Dubai to Mumbai, with the latest reports squashing this, saying Shah has nothing on these lines on his agenda.

But the BCCI secretary is willing to bring changes to the ICC after what unfolded during the chaotic conduct of the 2024 T20 World Cup in the Americas. At the annual conference later this month, a formal announcement on the election's date will be announced.
