‘He is heartbroken’: Rinku Singh’s father reveals son’s reaction on T20 WC exclusion

Rinku Singh is heartbroken after the T20 World Cup snub

Star Indian batter Rinku Singh's father, Khanchandra Singh, has revealed that his son was heartbroken after being excluded from the squad announced for the T20 World Cup.The Board of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) announced the 15-man squad for the marquee tournament, scheduled to get underway in the West Indies and USA in June.

Although Rinku's name was missing in the squad, he has been included in the four-man contingent of travelling reserves. Hence, his inclusion to the main squad is dependent on injuries to other players.

"There was hope and that is why there is a bit of sadness. We brought sweets, crackers to celebrate, we thought Rinku would play in the eleven,"Khanchandra told Bharat 24.

"He is heartbroken. He spoke to his mother and told her that he was not picked in the 11 or 15. But he also said that he will be travelling with the team," he added.

The selectors are yet to provide any explanation regarding Rinku's exclusion. Chief selector Ajit Agarkaar and captain Rohit Sharma are scheduled to hold a press conference at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday (May 2) where they are expected to field questions from the media.

Fans furious

Ever since making his debut for the Indian team in the T20 format, Rinku has been one of the most consistent batters. In his short 15-match T20I career so far, Rinku has scored 356 runs at an enviable average of 89 and strike rate of 176.24.

Despite the stats backing Rinku's ability, the selectors opted to go with Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube as the preferred finishers, primarily due to their bowling abilities. The limited batting opportunities that Rinku got with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) also did not do any justice to his cause.

The southpaw's exclusion has invited scathing criticism from fans and former cricketers alike. Many have argued that selectors opted for the conservative route as the alternative would have been to show the door to senior players, who may or may not have accepted the diktat easily.
