Former all-rounder Suresh Raina backed Shubman Gill to become India's next T20I captain. Raina was all praise for the young right-hander, who is gearing up for India's first Test versus Bangladesh in Chennai onThursday(Sep 19), and feels that if Gill can win the IPL as captain, where he leads the Gujarat Titans (GT), it will propel his chances to lead India in the shortest format. Gill was recently appointed as India's vice-captain in white-ball formats, during the Sri Lanka tour, and also led a second-stringed Indian team in five T20Is versus Zimbabwe, in the African nation.
'Shubman Gill is a superstar, he is the future T20I captain'
Raina while speaking to news agency PTI said, "Shubman Gill is a superstar. Gill is vice captain. It means someone is thinking about him. If he does well in the IPL and win the trophy, he is the future (captain). He will be the next super star."
Gill has played 21 T20Is for India, scoring578 runs at a strike-rate of 139.27. He was not part of Rohit Sharma-led India's squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, where the Men in Blue beat South Africa by seven runs in an epic final to win the title. However, he is expected to be a regular in the playing XI following the retirements of Rohit and Virat Kohli.
Gill is currently gearing up for India's hectic Test season, where they first host Bangladesh (in two Tests) and then New Zealand (three Test matches) before travelling to Australia for a five-match Test series Down Under. The right-hander, with 1,492 and 2,328 runs in Tests and ODIs respectively, will aim for a good and consistent run vital points up for grabs for India in the ongoing 2023-25 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) cycle.
