'Journalism is dead': US-based magazine faces flak for 'disgusting' cover featuring Trump and Biden

Donald Trump and Joe Biden

New York Magazine's latest cover has become a matter of online controversy for featuring half-naked photos of United States President Joe Biden and his predecessorDonald Trump, where they bothcan be seen standing on weighing scales in nothing but white underwear.

Some social media users have found the cover extremely offensive as it was released just a few days after Trump's assassination bid and a few hours after Biden revealed that he tested positive for COVID-19 with mild symptoms.

The magazine posted the image on social media platforms, promoting it as its "new Health Issue". It said that the edition features "medical breakthroughs and scandals, plus one political convulsion: the President’s seeming deterioration."

In the extended post, executive editor Genevieve Smith was quoted as saying, "We had already been thinking about how to address the fact that this health issue would drop in the middle of a presidential campaign, when the presidential debate put the health and age of the candidates in the center of the national conversation."

However, the concept and creativity didn't go well with the users, who flooded the comment section with their concerns, calling it "disgusting".

In the comments section, one user asked, "Now why would you make this cover? Who asked for this?"

"This is disgusting," another said.

"What happened to promoting body positivity?" another user asked.

"This is sad, disgusting trash. I'm shocked at how awful this this, it makes me want to scratch my eyes out (sic)," one user said, while another wrote: "This cover CGI is embarrassing. Journalism is dead."

Biden feeling 'good'

Biden on Wednesday said that he was feeling "good" after he tested positive for Covid during a campaign trip to Las Vegas.

"I'm feeling good," the US presidenttold reporters as he boarded Air Force One before heading to his vacation home in Delaware.

This comes asBiden isfacing growing pressure to drop his re-election bid against Trump after a disastrous debate performance sparked concerns about his age and health.

"Earlier today following his first event in Las Vegas, President Biden tested positive for COVID-19," White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre said in a statement.

"He is vaccinated and boosted and he is experiencing mild symptoms. He will be returning to Delaware where he will self-isolate and will continue to carry out all of his duties fully during that time."
