Gaza war: Hamas accepts US proposal to begin talks on releasing Israeli hostages

Hamas has accepted a proposal by the United States (US) to begin talks on releasing Israeli hostages, 16 days after the first phase of an agreement aimed at ending the Gaza war, the news agency Reuters reported on Saturday (July 6) citing a source from the Palestinian militant group.
The source, who chose to remain anonymous, said that Hamas dropped a demand that Israel first commit to a permanentceasefire before signing the agreement, and would allow negotiations to achieve that throughout the first six-week phase.
'Proposal will end the Israel-Hamas war'
A Palestinian official close to the internationally mediated peace efforts told Reuters that the proposal could lead to aframework agreement if embraced by Israel and would end the war.

The Hamas source, meanwhile, pointed out that the proposal ensured that mediators would guarantee a temporary ceasefire,aid delivery and withdrawal of Israeli troops as long as indirect talks continued to implement the second phase of the agreement.
Israel is yet to comment on this development.
Efforts to secure truce deal, hostage release intensify
The effortsto secure a ceasefire and hostage release in the Gaza Strip have intensified in the past few dayswith active shuttle diplomacy among Washington,Israeland Qatar.
On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that Mossad ChiefDavid Barneareturned from an initial meeting with mediators in Qatar and that negotiations would continue next week.

Earlier this week, Prime Minister Netanyahu said that Israel was nearing its goalof taking out the military capabilities of Hamas."We are advancing to the end of the phase of eliminating the terrorist army of Hamas, and there will be a continuation to strike its remnants," he said.
