Donald Trump was the target of an apparent assassination attempt — the second in two months — as on Sunday (Sep 15) in Florida, a gunman opened fire "in his vicinity" using an AK-47 style rifle.
The former US President was safe and unharmed after the apparent attempt on his life and the suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, has been detained.
Trump had been golfing at his golf course, theTrump International Golf Club, in West Palm Beach, Florida, not far from his Mar-a-Lago residence, when the incident happened.
As per reports, the gunman was hiding in some bushes near the property line of the golf course when Secret Service agents, who were clearing holes ahead of where Trump was playing, spotted a rifle barrel in the bushes.
Secret Service agents engaged the gunman and fired at least four rounds of ammunition around 1:30 pm (1730 GMT).
Following this, the gunman dropped his rifle, along with two backpacks and other items, and fled in a black Nissan car.
However, as per the sheriff's office, a witness saw the gunman and managed to take photos of his car and license plate. The would-be assassin was spotted about 400 to 500 yards (around 365 to 457 meters) from where Trump was playing, said Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw.
"The Secret Service did exactly what should have been done. They provided exactly what the protection should have been. And their agent did a fantastic job," added Bradshaw.
This was the second attempt on Trump's life in as many months.
In a message on his fundraisingwebsite, Donald Trump said,"Fear not! I am safe and well, and no one was hurt. Thank God!"

In an email to his supporters, Trump said: "There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!"
"Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER!" he added.
In a statement on social media platform X, US President Joe Biden said he was "relieved that the former president is unarmed".
"As I have said many times, there is no place for political violence or for any violence ever in our country, and I have directed my team to continue to ensure that the Secret Service has every resource, capability and protective measure necessary to ensure the former President’s continued safety," he added in a subsequent post.
Vice President Kamala Harris also said she was "glad he (Trump) is safe" and stated that "Violence has no place in America."
