The Supreme Court today asked the Centre for a comprehensive data on the number of Rohingya refugees staying in Haryana's Mewat and Faridabad camps. The apex court also demanded information on the amenities being provided to the refugees.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra asked the central government to file the status report on the three camps, located at Mewat, Faridabad and Delhi.
The central government is required to submit a comprehensive report on the same within four weeks. The case will be heard again on May 9.
Rohingya refugees in India had alleged that they were not provided with some of the basic amenities like clean toilets, safe drinking water. among others. Many living in the camps were reported to have suffered from diarrhoea.
In its March 19 directive, the apex court had declined to grant any interim relief to Rohingya refugees and noted that no interim order, with regard to ensuring the health and educational facilities for Rohingya refugee camps, will be passed unless materials contradicting the Centre's claims are produced.
Rohingyas in India, who fled after violence in the Western Rakhine state of Myanmar, are settled across states like Jammu, Hyderabad, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi-NCR and Rajasthan.
