With her win at 77th Cannes film festival, Payal Kapadia scripted history. The filmmaker madeIndia proud as she clinched Golden Prix, the second highest honour of the festival, for her film All We Imagine As Light. Since her win, congratulations have been pouring in. Recently, actor and former chairman of FTII Gajendra Chauhan congratulated Kapadia on her historic milestone, which didn't sitwell with actor Vijay Varma and netizens.

Taking a dig at Chauhan, the Lust Stories 2 actor shared ascreengrab of Gajendra's statement, in which the former FTII chairperson said that he's proud of the filmmaker.

Calling out the veteran actor, Varma wrote, “Sir ye chup rehne ka time tha (Sir this was the time to stay silent),” with a laughing emoji.

Along with the post, he shared a GIF reading “Karwali bezzati? (Got insulted?).”

In a statement to PTI, Gajendra said, “Congratulations to her and I feel proud that I was the chairman at the time when she was doing the course there.”

Vijay reacted to Mahabharata actor's remark due to his controversial tenure aspresident, during which Payal Kapadia was a student at the instituteand took part in the protest against the actor's appointment as the chairman.

Before Gajendra's comment, netizens and celebrities like Ali Fazal criticised FTII for hailing Payal on her achievement.

Payal's History at FTII

During her time at the Pune institute, Payal took part in the months-long protests against actor Gajendra's appointment as the chairman of the film institute. She faced disciplinary action and an FIR,and even her scholarship was retracted.

Back then, the Pune Police filed an FIR against 35 students, including Kapadia for holdingthen-FTII director Prashant Pathrabe captive in his office when they were protesting against the assessment of incomplete diploma film projects of the 2008 batch.

After Payal clinched the big prize at Cannes, FTII congratulated her with a statement released on X, reading, “It is a moment of pride for FTII as its Alumni create history at Cannes. As we witness a phenomenal year for Indian Cinema at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, FTII cherishes the glorious achievements of its Alumni at this Mega International Stage of Cinema."

Slamming FTII's post, actor Ali Fazal wrote, "Uhhh… please don’t. Just dont."

Payal Kapadia's Win At FTII

With All We Imagine As Light, Payal Kapadia has become the first Indian woman to win the coveted Golden Prix award. The movie about the two nurses was India's first film to compete at Cannes in 30 years.

The movie starring Kani Kusruti and Divya Prabha was also the first film in a competition by an Indian woman. The last time an Indian film won was Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar, which won the Grand Prix du Festival International du Film award in 1946.
