Even as the country was celebrating Payal Kapdia's&nbsp;<em>All We Imagine As Light </em>getting selected in the competition section ending the draught of 30 long years for Indian cinema, Indian filmmaker Chidananda S Naik's short film <em>Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know </em>won the 1st prize of La Cinef for Best Short at the festival. But that's not all. Indian filmmaker Mansi Maheshwari's <em>Bunnyhood</em> won the third prize in the same category.</p>

<p>While <em>Bunnyhood</em> is a UK film, it is made by a Meerut-based filmmaker.&nbsp;&nbsp;The La Cinef Awards were announced on May 23.<br />

Cannes will give a grant of 15,000 euros for the first prize and 11,250 euros and 7,500 euros for the second and third prizes, respectively.<br />

Chidanananda S Naik is a student of FTII, Pune. His film <em>Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know </em>won the first prize amongst 17 other films. According to reports, the category consisted of 18 films by film students from 2,263 applicants from 555 film schools across the globe.<br />

<em>Sunflowers were...</em> is a 16-minute short&nbsp;story of a village thrown into chaos by an elderly woman who steals a rooster. To bring the rooster back, a prophecy is invoked, sending the old lady’s family into exile.<br />

Meanwhile, Mansi Maheshwari, born in Meerut, made<em> Bunnyhood </em>as part of her graduation project at the National Film Television School (NFTS) in London.</p>

Chidanananda S Naik is a student of FTII, Pune. His film Sunflowers Were the First Ones to Know won the first prize amongst 17 other films. According to reports, the category consisted of 18 films by film students from 2,263 applicants from 555 film schools across the globe. Sunflowers were... is a 16-minute short story of a village thrown into chaos by an elderly woman who steals a rooster. To bring the rooster back, a prophecy is invoked, sending the old lady’s family into exile. Maybe Ketan Mehta, Vidhu Vinod Chopra… but the institute wouldn’t have taught them.”<br />

I asked them if they had seen Animal. Then I asked them to apply the rules of screenplay to Animal. It was over. There was a time when there were conformists (who paid more importance to) about how a film should be. But in social media and internet time, when everyone can express themselves, filmmaking is no longer communication, it’s pure art. So, a Sandeep Vanga can never come from a film institute. That is him as a person and that should be encouraged.”<br />

<p>According to official sources, the actor has taken the decision due to his commitment to an international TV show which will require him to be away from the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In his resignation letter, the actor mentioned that at the time when he was approached for the post by the then I&amp;B Minister Smriti Irani, he had mentioned that his work commitment would require him to stay away from the country for more than 6 months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At the time I was officially approached by the former I&amp;B minister Smt Smriti Irani to be appointed as the Chairman, I did share with her that I was due to be stationed in the US for nearly 6 months for an international TV show. The latest news now is that the show has been given a further extension of 4 months. This translates into me being stationed in the US for nearly 9 months between 2018 and 2019," the actor wrote in his letter.</p>

<p>The city-based Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) wants artists and technicians from movie industries across the globe to come here and use its expertise to hone their skills.</p>

<p>The FTII has requested the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to identify countries from where it can invite artists and technicians to take help of the prestigious institute&#39;s expertise in film training and education.</p>

<p>In the last nine months, the FTII has successfully conducted several short-term courses, like film appreciation, screen acting, digital cinematography, screenplay writing and fiction writing, in various institutions across the country for the film and TV industries, said the institute&#39;s director, Bhupendra Kainthola.</p>

<p>&quot;Besides, a group of 20 actors from Nepal has been undergoing a short course in &#39;screen acting&#39; here in the institute, which is the first initiative one of its kind by the Ministry of External Affairs,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>The FTII is regarded as a centre of excellence across the world and the films made by its students have been well received in festivals in India and abroad, apart from winning various national and international awards, he said.</p>

<p>The institute has a long list of prominent alumni, including filmmakers Adoor Gopalakrishnan, Girish Kasaravalli and Vidhu Vinod Chopra, and actors Om Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Jaya Bachchan and Shabana Azmi.</p>

<p>&quot;The FTII alumni have left an indelible imprint on all facets of the Indian cinema and television and have built an excellent reputation worldwide too,&quot; the director said.</p>

<p>&quot;With these strengths, we now want to go international and have a global footprint,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Kainthola said the Indian embassy in Nepal had approached the FTII to consider facilitating a short course for some of the actors from the Himalayan nation.</p>

<p>With the help of the MEA, the 20-day course in &#39;screen acting&#39; for 20 actors - 12 male and eight female - from Nepal started recently, he said.</p>

<p>&quot;It is up to the MEA which countries to choose. If we get a green signal, we will barely need a month&#39;s time to finalise the nitty-gritty of the project,&quot; Kainthola said.</p>

<p>&quot;Since all these short courses will be customised, if given a go ahead, we would first seek profiles of the target participants and according to their needs, the course material will be designed or modified,&quot; he added.</p>

<p>Siddharth Shasta, an associate professor in the FTII&#39;s acting department and the coordinator of the short course for the Nepalese actors, said their core staff will not be working on these training programmes.</p>

<p>&quot;We have trained resources in the form of our alumni and they have been given the responsibility to conduct such courses,&quot; he said.</p>

<p>Right now, the 20 actors, aged between 25 and 35, who have taken up the course at the FTII, are all established names in the Nepal&#39;s film industry.</p>

<p>Some of these actors belong to families traditionally associated with the Nepalese film industry and others have worked in TV serials, commercials, music videos and theatre, Shasta said.</p>

<p>Nepalese actor Sabina Gopali, currently undergoing the course at the FTII, said she is confident that the training programme will benefit her in professional and personal life.</p>

<p>Another Nepalese film actor, Kamal Raj Bhatta, said he never came across such methods of acting in his country.</p>

<p>He is hopeful that the course will enhance his acting skills.&nbsp;</p>

Kainthola said the Indian embassy in Nepal had approached the FTII to consider facilitating a short course for some of the actors from the Himalayan nation. With the help of the MEA, the 20-day course in 'screen acting' for 20 actors - 12 male and eight female - from Nepal started recently, he said. "It is up to the MEA which countries to choose. If we get a green signal, we will barely need a month's time to finalise the nitty-gritty of the project," Kainthola said. "Since all these short courses will be customised, if given a go ahead, we would first seek profiles of the target participants and according to their needs, the course material will be designed or modified," he added. Siddharth Shasta, an associate professor in the FTII's acting department and the coordinator of the short course for the Nepalese actors, said their core staff will not be working on these training programmes. "We have trained resources in the form of our alumni and they have been given the responsibility to conduct such courses," he said. Right now, the 20 actors, aged between 25 and 35, who have taken up the course at the FTII, are all established names in the Nepal's film industry. Some of these actors belong to families traditionally associated with the Nepalese film industry and others have worked in TV serials, commercials, music videos and theatre, Shasta said. Nepalese actor Sabina Gopali, currently undergoing the course at the FTII, said she is confident that the training programme will benefit her in professional and personal life. Another Nepalese film actor, Kamal Raj Bhatta, said he never came across such methods of acting in his country. He is hopeful that the course will enhance his acting skills.
