IPL 2024: CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad faces heat for MS Dhoni's batting order in loss vs SRH

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad is facing a bit of heat for his captaincy decisions during the loss against SunRisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 5 in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The bone of contention is MS Dhoni's batting order as he faced just three balls in the innings. Some of the former players and experts have criticised Gaikwad of sending Dhoni's in the last over.
"On the back of what he did in the last game, I'm amazed he did not come out to bat earlier. I can't understand why he's been out there for just three balls," said former England skipper Michael Vaughan while talking to Cricbuzz.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also questioned the decision to send Dhoni down the order and tweeted: "Considering off cutter planning in to the pitch and match up against Bhuvi and Unadkat, Dhoni the right hand batsman should have batted up the order in this match vs SRH."
CSKwere nicely placed at 119/3 in 13.4 overs after Shivam Dube's dismissal who scored a brilliant 24-ball 45. In the next 6.2 overs, however, they could manage only 46 runs and posted a below par total of 165/6 in 20 overs.
Speaking on the loss, CSK's second this season, skipper Gaikwad said: "I think to be honest, it was a slow pitch, They bowled well in the back-end, kept the game in control and didn't allow us to capitalize. It was a black soil pitch, so we expected the pitch to be slower, but it became slower and slower, and they used the boundary size well."

SRH got to a flyer while chasing a modest 166. The score might have been a bit below par but CSK bowlers did make it hard for SRH due to a slow and gripping pitch. It was Abhishek Sharma's innings of 37 in 12 balls which eventually proved helpful as SRH chased down the target in 18.1 overs with six wickets in hand.
