The artificial intelligence chipmaker Nvidia's market valuation surpassed $3 trillion on Wednesday as its shares surged to all-time highs. Due to the rise, Nvidia is now the second most valuable company in the world, surpassing Apple. This historic accomplishment coincides with Nvidia's strategic planning for a ten-for-one stock split that will take effect on June 7 toappeal to more private investors.

Shift in Silicon Valley dominance

The surge in the market value of Nvidia over Apple signifies a major change in the hierarchy of Silicon Valley. Following a moderate 0.8 per cent increase in stock price, Apple, a dominant force since the release of the iPhone in 2007, saw its market capitalization hit $3.003 trillion. On the other hand, Nvidia ended the day with a 5.2 per cent increase in share price, closing at $1,224.40, making the firm worth $3.012 trillion. With a 1.9 per cent increase in its shares, Microsoft, a Redmond, Washington-based company, is now the most valuable at $3.15 trillion according to the updated rankings.

AI demand drives Nvidia's ascent

The soaring demand for Nvidia's advanced artificial intelligence processors is a major factor in the company's extraordinary growth. The huge demand as major giants like Microsoft, Meta Platforms, and Alphabet rush to develop their AI computing skills is reflected in the company's shares, which havegained 147 per cent in 2024 alone. Nvidia's stock has increased by almost 30 per cent since May 22 because of the company's latest revenue projection, which added to investor excitement. Nvidia's market capitalisation surpassed the value of AT&T whole on Wednesday alone, rising by around $150 million.

Challenges and Comparisons with Apple

Nvidia is benefiting greatly from the AI revolution, whereas Apple is facing difficulties due to declining iPhone demand and fierce competition in China, the country with the largest smartphone market. When it comes to incorporating AI technologies into its goods and services, some investors believe Apple is trailing behind other industry leaders in this regard. Analyst estimates for Nvidia's future profits have similarly exceeded the business's stock gains. LSEG data shows that the company is currently trading at 39 times predicted earnings, down from nearly 70 times a year ago.

Nvidia CEO in the spotlight

The media has covered Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang extensively, especially in Taiwan, where he was born. His attendance at the Computex tech trade show in Taipei attracted a lot of attention, emphasising his contribution to the business's recent success. The rise of Nvidia highlights the increasing significance of AI technology in the tech sector and its ability to change the dynamics of the market.
