Apple is introducing additional controls around Full Disk Access on macOS as concerns grow over how AI agents can access sensitive information on a Mac. The company says the change is aimed at making users more clearly understand what they are allowing when they give an app this powerful permission. The move comes days after a report claimed Meta’s Muse AI app accessed private messages on a Mac. Meta disputed the claim. The issue nevertheless highlighted a wider concern: desktop AI agents can be given access to files, messages and other personal information to perform tasks with less human intervention.Apple says it is not simply removing Full Disk Access. Instead, it plans to require more explicit user action before an app can receive the permission.
Why Apple is changing Full Disk Access
Full Disk Access is a powerful macOS privacy setting. When granted, it can allow an application to access information such as files, Mail data, Messages and browsing history. The permission was originally designed to support legitimate functions, including certain backup tools. But Apple now says some developers are using it in ways that could expose large amounts of information without users fully understanding the consequences.“Some developers are using Full Disk Access in ways that could put users at risk,” Apple said. The company specifically pointed to the growing capabilities of AI agents as an additional concern.
AI agents make the risk more important
Unlike traditional apps, AI agents can perform tasks on a user's behalf. That can mean reading documents, searching files, interacting with applications and carrying out multi-step actions. This makes broad system access more significant. If an agent has access to more information than it needs, a mistake, security flaw or malicious instruction could potentially expose sensitive data. Apple said the risks could increase as AI agents become “increasingly capable and autonomous”. The announcement also follows a separate report about a flaw in OpenAI’s ChatGPT Mac app that could potentially have exposed sensitive information.
What Mac users should know
The change does not mean Full Disk Access is disappearing. Users who genuinely need to give an application this level of access should still be able to do so. The key difference is informed consent. Apple says future controls will make the decision more explicit, helping users understand that granting Full Disk Access can give an app access to highly sensitive information. For Mac users, the development is a reminder that AI convenience can come with a privacy trade-off. Giving an AI agent access to an entire computer may make some tasks easier, but it can also give the software visibility into far more personal information than the task actually requires. As AI agents become more autonomous, the question may no longer be simply what they can do but how much of your digital life they should be allowed to see.

Apple could finally end one of the Mac’s longest-running omissions. The company is reportedly preparing its first touchscreen MacBook Pro, with new 14-inch and 16-inch models featuring OLED displays potentially arriving as early as October. The report comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who said Apple could introduce the laptops in October or November. Apple is reportedly testing the machines with macOS 27.2, adding weight to speculation that the launch could be tied to the next major software update. If the reports prove accurate, the move would represent one of the biggest changes to Apple’s MacBook design philosophy in years.
Apple may finally embrace touchscreen Macs
For years, Apple has kept touchscreens largely away from macOS laptops, instead relying on the trackpad and keyboard for interaction. That could change with the new MacBook Pro. The reported models are expected to use OLED displays with touch support, while Apple is also said to be working on a thinner design. Another possible change is replacing the current display notch with a Dynamic Island-style cutout. The touchscreen models are reportedly expected to sit above Apple's existing 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, potentially creating a new premium tier rather than immediately replacing the current range.
M5 Pro and M5 Max could power the new Macs
The biggest surprise may be that Apple could use its M5 Pro and M5 Max chips in these touchscreen models. Apple already sells MacBook Pro models with these processors. Its current 14-inch and 16-inch machines offer M5 Pro and M5 Max configurations, with up to 128GB of unified memory on certain versions. That means the reported touchscreen MacBook Pro could focus less on introducing a new processor and more on changing how users interact with the Mac. There has also been speculation about cellular connectivity, although there is currently no confirmation that the laptops will include Apple’s C1X or C2 modem.
When could Apple launch it?
The timing remains uncertain. Gurman has said the touchscreen MacBook Pro could arrive as early as October, although the launch could slip into November. Apple has not announced the product and has not confirmed any of the reported specifications. That distinction is important: the touchscreen MacBook Pro remains a reported product, not an officially announced Apple device. If Apple does launch it, however, the change could mark a new direction for the MacBook Pro bringing one of the most familiar smartphone and tablet features to Apple's flagship laptop line for the first time.

Apple is reportedly preparing to make a long-awaited push into the smart-home market, with a new home hub expected to launch on October 13 alongside refreshed versions of the HomePod mini and Apple TV. According to Bloomberg, the central product is a device internally known as J490. It would represent a new Apple product category and give the company a dedicated piece of hardware for controlling smart-home devices and bringing Siri deeper into the home. The timing is significant for Apple’s new CEO John Ternus, who has been associated with a broader push to make the company’s product development faster and more experimental.
Apple’s new smart-home hub could change Siri’s role
The reported hub is expected to have a roughly 6-inch square display, with options for wall mounting or placing it on a surface. Reports suggest Apple is designing it around an upgraded, AI-powered Siri experience. That could make the device much more than a traditional smart speaker. Reports indicate the hub could be used to control smart-home accessories, display information, make video calls, play music and show photos. It is also expected to recognise different household members and provide personalised content. Apple already uses the HomePod mini and Apple TV as home hubs for controlling compatible HomeKit and Matter accessories remotely. The new device would therefore give Apple a more visible interface for the home rather than relying primarily on an iPhone or voice commands.
HomePod mini and Apple TV are also getting updates
Apple is also expected to unveil the first HomePod mini update since its 2020 debut, along with its first new Apple TV set-top box since 2022. Reports suggest the refreshed HomePod mini and Apple TV could retain their existing designs while receiving faster processors aimed at supporting newer Siri AI features. Apple currently sells the HomePod mini in India for Rs 15,900 and the Apple TV 4K from Rs 25,900.
Why Apple’s smart-home push matters now
Apple has been present in smart homes for years through HomeKit, Home and its existing devices. But it has not had a direct equivalent to products such as Amazon’s Echo Show or Google’s Nest Hub. The reported J490 could change that. More importantly, Apple’s new AI-powered Siri could become the centre of the strategy. Apple has already said its next-generation Siri is designed to be more capable and personal, while its smart-home infrastructure can connect HomePod and Apple TV to compatible accessories. If Apple can combine that smarter assistant with a dedicated screen, home controls and access to its wider ecosystem, the company would have a new way to keep users inside Apple’s ecosystem even when they are away from their phones. For now, the October 13 launch remains based on reported information rather than an official Apple announcement. But if the reports are accurate, Apple’s next big battle may happen inside the home rather than in the smartphone market.

Apple’s new CEO John Ternus is reportedly looking to make the company move faster, with a plan to reduce management layers and potentially launch new products more frequently throughout the year. The changes, reported by Bloomberg, point to an engineering-focused approach under Ternus, who became Apple CEO on September 1 after 15 years of Tim Cook’s leadership. Apple has not publicly announced a new product launch calendar, and the reported changes remain under consideration. The biggest surprise is that a previously reported plan to cut around 5,000 AppleCare jobs has reportedly been put on hold. Smaller reductions and budget cuts could still be considered, however.
John Ternus wants a faster Apple
Ternus is reportedly reviewing how Apple develops products and makes internal decisions. One proposed change involves reducing layers of middle management. The idea would be to give engineers a more direct line to senior executives, potentially shortening the process between an idea and a final product. That would mark a notable change for a company known for tightly controlled product development. The new CEO also reportedly wants Apple to become more experimental and release products more frequently rather than relying so heavily on its familiar spring and autumn launch windows.
Could Apple start launching products all year?
If the reported strategy moves ahead, Apple could spread hardware announcements across the calendar rather than concentrating major releases around a few events. That could mean a more continuous stream of new iPhones, Macs, iPads and other devices. However, this does not mean Apple has confirmed year-round launches. They have not announced a formal change to its product-release schedule. The possible shift would instead reflect Ternus’ reported push to make product development more responsive and less dependent on long internal processes. The reported pause on the larger AppleCare reduction is significant because it suggests Ternus’ restructuring is not simply about cutting headcount. According to the Bloomberg report, Apple is looking at a broader operational overhaul involving management structures, budgets and the way teams develop products. Ternus’ engineering background is central to this approach. He joined Apple in 2001, became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and later served as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering. Apple says he has overseen hardware development across the iPhone, Mac, Apple Watch and AirPods lines.
Why this matters for Apple’s next era
The timing is important. Apple is entering the Ternus era while facing pressure to accelerate its AI strategy and find new areas of growth. Ternus inherited a company that has become significantly larger under Cook, but his background is firmly rooted in engineering and hardware. The reported restructuring suggests his approach could be less about simply making Apple smaller and more about making it faster. For consumers, the biggest potential change could eventually be simple: instead of waiting for a few major Apple events each year, new products could appear more regularly. For now, though, that remains a reported direction rather than an officially confirmed Apple strategy.

Apple CEO John Ternus is reportedly pushing for faster product development, fewer management layers and potentially more frequent launches throughout the year. A reported plan to cut around 5,000 AppleCare jobs has also been put on hold, Bloomberg says.

Apple has reportedly carried out another round of job cuts, making it the company's second reported layoff exercise in less than two months. According to a Bloomberg, Apple cut a handful of employees from its Fitness+ team last week. The affected workers were mainly involved in the audio side of the service, including Time to Walk and Time to Run. The move does not currently signal the end of Fitness+. However, users could see new audio content released less frequently.
Which Fitness+ jobs were affected?
Time to Walk and Time to Run are designed for Apple Watch users who want guided exercise or walking sessions without watching a video. The reported cuts appear to have hit employees involved in producing this type of audio content. Existing features are not being discontinued, according to the reporting, but the pace of new releases could slow. That could mean fewer fresh sessions for subscribers, rather than the removal of the service itself. Fitness+ is Apple's subscription fitness platform and competes with services such as Peloton.
Apple already cut more than 200 jobs
The latest reductions come only weeks after another reported round of layoffs at Apple. More than 200 employees were reportedly affected in August, with cuts involving teams working on Siri, Vision Pro and Intelligent Systems Experience, Apple's software engineering organisation responsible for some AI-related work. Apple said during that earlier restructuring that it was realigning some teams and that a limited number of existing positions would be affected. The Fitness+ cuts are much smaller, but their timing has raised questions about Apple's priorities under new CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook on September 1.
Could Fitness+ become part of Apple Health?
The reported cuts have also fuelled speculation about a broader rethink of Fitness+. One possibility being discussed in industry reporting is closer integration between Fitness+ and Apple's Health ecosystem. Apple is already working on changes to the Health experience, while the company's health teams have become more closely tied to services leadership. For Apple, Fitness+ also requires a steady stream of new content, making it a service with continuing production costs. For now, however, there is no indication that Apple plans to shut Fitness+ down. The immediate change users may notice is simpler: Time to Walk and Time to Run could receive new episodes less often.

Apple could be preparing one of its biggest hardware shifts in years: a return to the enterprise server market, this time with AI at the centre of the strategy. According to a report by The Information, Apple is developing an AI-focused server that could use two or four future M8 Ultra chips. The machine is reportedly aimed at AI developers, businesses and governments, with a possible launch in 2029. Apple has not confirmed the project, and it could still be cancelled or changed. The reported move comes as AI companies are increasingly buying Apple's high-performance Macs to run AI workloads.
Apple’s reported M8 Ultra AI server
The proposed server would reportedly come in two configurations. One could combine two M8 Ultra chips, while a larger version could use four. The focus would be on AI inference essentially running trained AI models and generating responses rather than primarily training huge models. The project reportedly began around a year ago, when John Ternus was Apple's hardware engineering chief. Ternus became Apple CEO on September 1. The timing is significant. AI companies have reportedly been buying Mac mini and Mac Studio machines in large numbers. The Information reported that OpenAI had bought tens of thousands of them, while Anthropic has rented Mac minis through Amazon Web Services.
Why Nvidia could be part of Apple’s plan
The most surprising part of the report is that Apple is considering Nvidia's NVLink Fusion to connect its own M8 Ultra chips. NVLink Fusion includes hardware and software designed to allow processors to communicate at very high speeds inside data centres. Apple reportedly believes Nvidia's technology could offer the connectivity needed to scale multiple chips inside an AI server. The possibility is notable because Apple and Nvidia have had a strained relationship for years. Their reported discussions therefore suggest that AI infrastructure could be creating new areas of cooperation. However, Nvidia's involvement is not confirmed. Apple could proceed without the technology.
Apple’s return to servers
If launched, the machine would represent Apple's return to dedicated enterprise servers after it discontinued its Xserve line in 2011. Apple already operates servers for its Private Cloud Compute system, but those are not products sold to outside organisations. The reported M8 Ultra machine would be different: Apple would potentially sell it directly to AI developers, businesses and governments. There is also a major challenge. Enterprise customers need specialised software, remote management, developer support and long-term service. Apple would have to build much more than the hardware itself. For now, the M8 Ultra server remains a reported project rather than an announced Apple product. But if it reaches the market in 2029, Apple could find itself competing in an AI server industry dominated by companies such as Nvidia using its own silicon, and potentially Nvidia technology, to do it.

The overnight queues showed how Apple’s annual iPhone launch continues to be an event in itself for its most loyal customers.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have gone on sale in India, drawing early morning and overnight queues in Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Some buyers arrived as early as 5am, while one customer travelled from Nashik after queuing since 10pm.

Apple is facing a deeper regulatory probe in India over its iOS 18 software warranty terms, after consumers complained about display and microphone problems following the update and costly repair bills. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) escalated the matter to its investigation wing on July 29, ordering a detailed investigation into alleged violations of consumer rights, according to documents reviewed by Reuters. The case could have consequences beyond a fine. If the regulator ultimately finds against Apple, the company could potentially be required to provide refunds or change aspects of its business practices.
What is the iOS 18 controversy?
The complaints relate to Apple's iOS 18 update, released in late 2024. The CCPA says some users reported green, pink or white lines appearing on iPhone displays after upgrading. Other complaints involved display and microphone malfunctions. The regulator alleges that consumers were then forced to pay what it described as “exorbitant amounts” for repairs or replacement screens, despite the complaints being linked to the software update. Reuters reported that servicing an iPhone 15 screen can cost about ₹27,900, or roughly $291. The CCPA says it received 75 complaints and is treating the matter as an issue affecting consumers as a class.
Apple says iOS 18 has no systemic problem
Apple is contesting the allegations. In an August 20 response to investigators, the company said iOS 18 underwent stringent testing and that it had identified no systemic issues or safety concerns with the software in India. Apple also argues that its software licence terms are standard industry practice. Its agreements state that the software is provided without a warranty, while its limited warranty generally covers hardware. The company said consumers are informed about these terms before installing the software and pointed to similar approaches used by companies including Sony and Samsung.Apple also noted that only around 11 per cent of iPhones were still running iOS 18 by June 2026.
Could Apple be forced to change its policy?
That is now the key question. The investigation will allow authorities to examine documents and hear Apple's position before a final report is prepared. Legal expert Kirti Mahapatra told Reuters that where warranty conditions are part of an alleged unfair practice, the CCPA can seek changes to how such terms are communicated. She said forcing changes to warranty terms would, however, be unprecedented. For Apple, the dispute comes at an important time in India. Its iPhone market share has grown from 4 per cent in 2022 to 9 per cent last year, according to Counterpoint Research. That makes the outcome important not just for Apple, but also for millions of Indian iPhone users who increasingly rely on software updates to keep their devices running.

Apple may have just abandoned one of its most ambitious foldable projects. A new research note from display research firm Omdia reportedly says the company has cancelled plans for a 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBook. The report, first highlighted by 9to5Mac, appears to refer to the large foldable iPad-MacBook hybrid Apple has been rumoured to be developing for years. The timing is striking. The report comes just days before Apple’s September 9 event, where the company is expected to unveil new products. Apple itself has confirmed the event, but has not confirmed a foldable iPhone or the reported cancellation.
Apple’s giant foldable was unlike an iPhone
The reported device was far larger than Apple’s expected first foldable smartphone. Earlier reports described a device with a display of roughly 18 to 20 inches when opened. It was expected to blur the line between an iPad and a MacBook, offering a huge flexible screen that could fold into a smaller form for carrying. Omdia’s latest research now says the 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBook plan has been cancelled. MacRumors also reported the same finding from Omdia.
It was once a John Ternus priority
The project had an interesting connection to John Ternus, who became Apple CEO earlier this week. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple was working on a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad and described it as a Ternus priority when he was still the company’s hardware chief. But Gurman also warned that Apple could ultimately abandon it because of its experimental nature.
What happens to Apple’s foldable plans now?
If Omdia’s assessment is accurate, Apple’s foldable strategy could initially be much narrower than earlier rumours suggested. The company may focus first on a foldable iPhone before attempting a much larger MacBook or iPad device. For consumers, that means the futuristic giant foldable iPad-MacBook could remain a prototype rather than becoming an Apple product. For now, however, the cancellation is still a report, not an Apple announcement. The company has yet to publicly confirm whether the project has been permanently shelved.

The foldable iPhone 18 Ultra has apparently been leaked online, with an influencer showing what he claims to be Apple's latest phone. Lewis Hilsenteger of the popular Canadian YouTube channel Unbox Therapy posted a video of the latest model alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In the video, the YouTuber says an unnamed source in China sent the phone. The user is almost sure that the device is similar to the final product. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to be announced on September 9, 2026. The foldable iPhone, as seen in the said video, opens like other such devices. It has a screen in the front and a dual rear camera on the back. The screen inside is wider than the entire length of the phone. Nearly two million people have seen the video of what is being presented as the foldable iPhone 18 Ultra.
Accurate devices being sent to YouTuber before release
The YouTuber said that this person who has been sending the phones to him from China has been increasingly accurate. "There's increasing accuracy coming out of China... The stuff they're sending is looking more and more like the actual finished products," he said. A user who has been following the page added that this person has provided the devices for five years, and almost all of them have turned out to be the same as the final devices that are released.

"Whoever has been supplying these mock-up phones has been accurate for 5 years straight, so I know these are actually going to be the new iPhones," the person said. The phone has a straight edge along the crease and a curved outer edge. The one in the video is white with a matte finish, with a shiny Apple logo. A camera cutout is present in the top left corner. Apple also seems to have changed the position of the volume buttons, moving them to the top from the side. Two buttons, presumably the unlock and action buttons, are on the side. Commenting on the video, most users seemed unhappy with the pronounced hinge and the fold. A user wrote, "i doooo nott like that fold." Another added, "Just wish the fold would have been a bit taller in size when closed, I was so excited for it but it’s a let down."

Steve Jobs is remembered as one of the most influential figures in technology. But there is one unusual detail about his time at Apple that still attracts attention: his salary was just $1 a year. After returning to Apple in 1997, Jobs received a $1 annual salary as the company’s interim CEO and continued on that salary after becoming permanent CEO. Apple confirmed the arrangement in its filings.
So, did Jobs really get paid only $1 by Apple?
Not exactly. Steve Jobs’ famous $1 salaryJobs’ $1 salary was real. Steve Jobs famously took a salary of just $1 a year from Apple after returning to the company in 1997.

Apple has revealed the pay packages for its new CEO John Ternus and former CEO Tim Cook, just as the company enters a new leadership era. Ternus, who officially became Apple CEO on September 1, has a target compensation of about $58 million for fiscal 2027. Cook, who has moved into the role of executive chairman, has a new target package worth about $47 million. The figures were disclosed in an Apple filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission on the first day of Ternus’ tenure.
How much will John Ternus earn at Apple?
Ternus will receive an annual base salary of $3 million. The much larger part of his package comes from Apple shares. His fiscal 2027 equity award has a target value of $55 million. Importantly, this is not guaranteed cash. The value of the stock award can rise or fall depending on Apple’s share price. Ternus will also receive a prorated RSU award worth about $2.5 million for his time as CEO during fiscal 2026.Of his $55 million annual equity award, 75 per cent will be performance-based. It will depend on Apple’s total shareholder return compared with other companies in the S&P 500. The remaining 25 per cent will be time-based shares, vesting in equal instalments every six months over four years.
Tim Cook’s new Apple salary revealed
Cook’s pay will fall as he moves away from the CEO role, but his new package remains substantial. As executive chairman, Cook will receive an annual salary of $2 million and a fiscal 2027 equity award targeted at $45 million. Half of that stock award will be performance-based, while the other half will vest over four years. Cook earned $74.3 million in total compensation in 2025 as Apple CEO, including a $3 million salary, $12 million in performance-based cash awards and $57.5 million in stock awards.
Why Apple’s CEO change matters
Ternus is taking charge after Cook’s 15-year run as Apple CEO. Apple said in April that Ternus would succeed Cook from September 1, while Cook would become executive chairman. During Cook’s tenure, Apple grew from a company valued at around $350 billion to roughly $4.5 trillion, according to Reuters. Now Ternus faces a different challenge: keeping Apple’s enormous business growing while pushing harder in areas such as artificial intelligence. The leadership change also comes just days before Apple’s September 9 product event, giving Ternus an early opportunity to shape the company’s next chapter.

After years of steering the tech giant to record highs, Cook is expected to move into the role of Executive Chairman, marking a new chapter for the company. Apple is cutting more than 200 jobs across its Siri and Vision Pro operations, in one of its clearest recent signs that the company is changing where it puts its resources. Around 100 positions are being eliminated from the Vision Pro organisation, while another 100 or so are being cut from Siri and related software teams, according to reports. The reshuffle is particularly significant because Apple is scaling back some Vision Pro projects while simultaneously reorganising teams working on its next generation of AI features.
Vision Pro gaming team largely shut down
The Vision Pro division is facing some of the biggest changes. Apple is reportedly largely shutting down a team dedicated to gaming features for the mixed-reality headset. The company is also reducing the team responsible for creating immersive video content. That does not mean Vision Pro is being abandoned. Instead, Apple is reportedly trying to align the product more closely with how people actually use it and where the company sees greater opportunities. Apple launched Vision Pro in 2024 as its entry into spatial computing, with a starting US price of $3,499. The headset combines eye tracking, hand gestures and voice controls with a three-dimensional interface. But the high price has made mass adoption difficult, while producing large amounts of immersive video is expensive. Apple now appears to be favouring a smaller amount of in-house content while relying more on outside companies.
Siri is being rebuilt for the AI era
The other major change is happening inside Siri. The cuts are reportedly linked to Apple's attempt to rebuild Siri's underlying technology rather than simply automate existing jobs. That means some existing positions are being removed while new roles are created around the company's updated AI architecture. Apple's Intelligent Systems Experience team, which works on AI features across its products, is also affected. The company said the changes are part of an effort to “evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users” and said new roles would be created as part of the restructuring.
Is AI really behind Apple's layoffs?
Partly but not in the usual way. Unlike some technology companies that have directly linked job cuts to AI-driven efficiency, Apple's move appears to be more about changing priorities and reorganising teams. For Vision Pro, Apple is reportedly putting less emphasis on gaming and expensive immersive content. For Siri, it is moving towards a new AI architecture. At the same time, Apple is reportedly exploring future products including smart glasses, while a new Vision Pro model is also expected further down the line. The message from Apple is therefore less about abandoning existing technology and more about deciding which version of its future deserves the most people and money.
