Apple may have just abandoned one of its most ambitious foldable projects. A new research note from display research firm Omdia reportedly says the company has cancelled plans for a 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBook. The report, first highlighted by 9to5Mac, appears to refer to the large foldable iPad-MacBook hybrid Apple has been rumoured to be developing for years. The timing is striking. The report comes just days before Apple’s September 9 event, where the company is expected to unveil new products. Apple itself has confirmed the event, but has not confirmed a foldable iPhone or the reported cancellation.
Apple’s giant foldable was unlike an iPhone
The reported device was far larger than Apple’s expected first foldable smartphone. Earlier reports described a device with a display of roughly 18 to 20 inches when opened. It was expected to blur the line between an iPad and a MacBook, offering a huge flexible screen that could fold into a smaller form for carrying. Omdia’s latest research now says the 16.1-inch to 18-inch foldable MacBook plan has been cancelled. MacRumors also reported the same finding from Omdia.
It was once a John Ternus priority
The project had an interesting connection to John Ternus, who became Apple CEO earlier this week. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple was working on a roughly 20-inch foldable iPad and described it as a Ternus priority when he was still the company’s hardware chief. But Gurman also warned that Apple could ultimately abandon it because of its experimental nature.
What happens to Apple’s foldable plans now?
If Omdia’s assessment is accurate, Apple’s foldable strategy could initially be much narrower than earlier rumours suggested. The company may focus first on a foldable iPhone before attempting a much larger MacBook or iPad device. For consumers, that means the futuristic giant foldable iPad-MacBook could remain a prototype rather than becoming an Apple product. For now, however, the cancellation is still a report, not an Apple announcement. The company has yet to publicly confirm whether the project has been permanently shelved.

The foldable iPhone 18 Ultra has apparently been leaked online, with an influencer showing what he claims to be Apple's latest phone. Lewis Hilsenteger of the popular Canadian YouTube channel Unbox Therapy posted a video of the latest model alongside the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In the video, the YouTuber says an unnamed source in China sent the phone. The user is almost sure that the device is similar to the final product. Apple's first foldable iPhone is expected to be announced on September 9, 2026. The foldable iPhone, as seen in the said video, opens like other such devices. It has a screen in the front and a dual rear camera on the back. The screen inside is wider than the entire length of the phone. Nearly two million people have seen the video of what is being presented as the foldable iPhone 18 Ultra.
Accurate devices being sent to YouTuber before release
The YouTuber said that this person who has been sending the phones to him from China has been increasingly accurate. "There's increasing accuracy coming out of China... The stuff they're sending is looking more and more like the actual finished products," he said. A user who has been following the page added that this person has provided the devices for five years, and almost all of them have turned out to be the same as the final devices that are released.

"Whoever has been supplying these mock-up phones has been accurate for 5 years straight, so I know these are actually going to be the new iPhones," the person said. The phone has a straight edge along the crease and a curved outer edge. The one in the video is white with a matte finish, with a shiny Apple logo. A camera cutout is present in the top left corner. Apple also seems to have changed the position of the volume buttons, moving them to the top from the side. Two buttons, presumably the unlock and action buttons, are on the side. Commenting on the video, most users seemed unhappy with the pronounced hinge and the fold. A user wrote, "i doooo nott like that fold." Another added, "Just wish the fold would have been a bit taller in size when closed, I was so excited for it but it’s a let down."

A YouTuber showed off a device which he claimed was Apple's foldable iPhone 18 Ultra and had been sent to him from China. He says the past devices have been the same as the final launch. The foldable iPhone has a prominent crease, which netizens did not like.

Steve Jobs is remembered as one of the most influential figures in technology. But there is one unusual detail about his time at Apple that still attracts attention: his salary was just $1 a year. After returning to Apple in 1997, Jobs received a $1 annual salary as the company’s interim CEO and continued on that salary after becoming permanent CEO. Apple confirmed the arrangement in its filings.
So, did Jobs really get paid only $1 by Apple?
Not exactly. Steve Jobs’ famous $1 salaryJobs’ $1 salary was real. Apple said he had received that salary every year since returning to the company in 1997. In fiscal 2010, for example, his reported salary was again just $1. He received no new stock or option award that year. The strategy was closely linked to his ownership of Apple shares. Apple said Jobs’ stock ownership aligned his interests with shareholders. By 2010, Jobs owned about 5.5 million Apple shares. He had not sold shares since returning to the company in 1997.
Apple gave Jobs a huge stock award
The biggest part of Jobs’ Apple compensation came through equity. In 2003, Jobs voluntarily cancelled 27.5 million stock options and received 5 million restricted shares instead. The award was valued at about $74.75 million at the time. Those shares later increased to 10 million after Apple’s stock split and vested fully in 2006. Apple’s stock had risen sharply during that period, making the award enormously valuable.
He also received a $90 million private jet
According to reports Jobs’ compensation history included another extraordinary perk. In 1999, Apple awarded him a Gulfstream V aircraft for his service as interim CEO. Apple said the aircraft was worth about $90 million. The amount was later recorded differently in Apple’s filings because the plane was transferred to Jobs in 2001 and related payments and tax assistance were reported across fiscal years. So while the famous headline says Steve Jobs earned $1 a year, that figure describes his base salary, not the full value of everything he received from Apple. His story became an early example of how billionaire executives can receive little in cash salary while building enormous wealth through company stock.

Apple is cutting more than 200 jobs across its Siri and Vision Pro operations, in one of its clearest recent signs that the company is changing where it puts its resources. Around 100 positions are being eliminated from the Vision Pro organisation, while another 100 or so are being cut from Siri and related software teams, according to reports. The reshuffle is particularly significant because Apple is scaling back some Vision Pro projects while simultaneously reorganising teams working on its next generation of AI features.
Vision Pro gaming team largely shut down
The Vision Pro division is facing some of the biggest changes. Apple is reportedly largely shutting down a team dedicated to gaming features for the mixed-reality headset. The company is also reducing the team responsible for creating immersive video content. That does not mean Vision Pro is being abandoned. Instead, Apple is reportedly trying to align the product more closely with how people actually use it and where the company sees greater opportunities. Apple launched Vision Pro in 2024 as its entry into spatial computing, with a starting US price of $3,499. The headset combines eye tracking, hand gestures and voice controls with a three-dimensional interface. But the high price has made mass adoption difficult, while producing large amounts of immersive video is expensive. Apple now appears to be favouring a smaller amount of in-house content while relying more on outside companies.
Siri is being rebuilt for the AI era
The other major change is happening inside Siri. The cuts are reportedly linked to Apple's attempt to rebuild Siri's underlying technology rather than simply automate existing jobs. That means some existing positions are being removed while new roles are created around the company's updated AI architecture. Apple's Intelligent Systems Experience team, which works on AI features across its products, is also affected. The company said the changes are part of an effort to “evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users” and said new roles would be created as part of the restructuring.
Is AI really behind Apple's layoffs?
Partly but not in the usual way. Unlike some technology companies that have directly linked job cuts to AI-driven efficiency, Apple's move appears to be more about changing priorities and reorganising teams. For Vision Pro, Apple is reportedly putting less emphasis on gaming and expensive immersive content. For Siri, it is moving towards a new AI architecture. At the same time, Apple is reportedly exploring future products including smart glasses, while a new Vision Pro model is also expected further down the line. The message from Apple is therefore less about abandoning existing technology and more about deciding which version of its future deserves the most people and money.

Apple cuts 200+ jobs across Siri and Vision Pro teams: Here’s what is changing

If you are considering buying an iPhone 17 Pro, waiting a few weeks could make more sense. Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, and current leaks point to several meaningful upgrades rather than a simple yearly refresh. Apple has not confirmed the launch date or specifications, but September 8 or 9 are currently among the reported possibilities.
Here are nine changes that could make the wait worthwhile
1. A new 2nm A20 Pro chip The biggest internal upgrade could be Apple's A20 Pro, reportedly built using TSMC's 2nm process. The smaller process should help improve performance and power efficiency, which could benefit gaming and on-device AI. 2. Apple's C2 modemApple is expected to continue replacing third-party modem technology with its own. The C2 modem could improve connectivity while reducing power consumption. Some reports also suggest Apple is exploring broader satellite connectivity. 3. A smaller Dynamic IslandThe front of the iPhone could look cleaner. Reports suggest Apple may reduce the size of the Dynamic Island, with under-display Face ID technology potentially helping free up screen space. Whether Apple can achieve the full change this year remains uncertain. 4. The camera could get a major hardware changeThe 48MP main Fusion camera is widely rumoured to gain a variable aperture. Unlike the fixed aperture on recent Pro models, the lens could physically adjust how much light reaches the sensor. That could mean better control in bright and dark scenes, as well as greater control over background blur and depth of field. 5. Better telephoto photographyApple could also give the telephoto camera a wider aperture and improve its optics. That could be particularly useful when shooting subjects in low light or using zoom. 6. A simpler Camera ControlThe Camera Control introduced with the iPhone 16 could be redesigned. Reports suggest Apple may remove some of its touch-sensitive components while retaining the main camera controls, potentially making it easier to use. 7. More efficient displaysThe Pro models are expected to retain 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch OLED displays, but could move to an improved LTPO+ technology. The main benefit may be efficiency, helping the phone reduce power consumption. 8. A bigger Pro Max batteryThe iPhone 18 Pro Max could receive a particularly noticeable battery upgrade. Current reports suggest a capacity of around 5,567mAh for US models, compared with 5,088mAh for the US iPhone 17 Pro Max. Combined with the 2nm chip and C2 modem, that could translate into longer real-world battery life. 9. Satellite connectivity could go furtherApple already offers satellite-based emergency features. The next step could be satellite connectivity capable of supporting more than emergency communication, although availability would depend heavily on network infrastructure and regional support.
Should you wait for iPhone 18 Pro?
For existing iPhone 17 Pro owners, the upgrade may not be essential. But for someone about to buy a new Pro iPhone, the combination of a 2nm chip, variable-aperture camera, larger battery, smaller Dynamic Island and C2 modem could make waiting worthwhile. There is one big catch: none of these specifications are officially confirmed by Apple yet. The launch date, pricing and final feature list could still change.

This hasn’t happened since the first iPhone: 5 major rumored iPhone 18 Pro updates

Apple could be preparing one of its biggest iPhone camera changes in years. The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are widely expected to get a variable-aperture main camera, a feature Apple has never previously used on an iPhone. If the reports are accurate, the change could make the biggest difference when shooting video in difficult lighting. The idea is simple. Current Pro iPhones use a fixed aperture on their main camera. The iPhone 18 Pro could instead physically adjust the lens opening, allowing more light into the camera when conditions get dark. That matters because night video is much harder than night photography.
Why variable aperture could help at night
When filming in a dark street, restaurant or concert, a phone has limited light to work with. It can increase exposure through software, but that can introduce noise and make shadows look muddy. A wider physical aperture gives the sensor more light before the image-processing system has to compensate. That could mean cleaner shadows, less visible noise and better-looking detail in dark video. It could also help the phone maintain more natural shutter speeds in difficult conditions. The technology has been reported by multiple sources, including Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and supply-chain reports. Apple has reportedly begun production of components for the system.
It is not only about night video
The same hardware could make the iPhone 18 Pro more flexible during the day. The aperture could close in bright conditions, giving the camera more control over exposure. It could also provide greater control over depth of field, potentially creating more natural background separation than software-only effects. That is a major shift in philosophy for the iPhone camera. Instead of relying almost entirely on computational photography to compensate for a fixed lens, Apple would be giving the hardware more control. There are also reports of a wider-aperture telephoto camera for the Pro models. A larger opening on that lens could improve low-light zoom performance and reduce noise when shooting distant subjects at night.
Apple could be making video the real winner
The most interesting part may be how the camera behaves while recording.Video cannot simply take a series of long exposures and combine them in the same way a phone can for some night photographs. Motion has to remain natural from frame to frame.A variable aperture gives Apple another physical control over exposure. That could help the iPhone balance brightness without relying as heavily on aggressive digital processing. But there is an important caveat: better night video is not guaranteed. The final result will depend on the aperture range, sensor size, lens quality, image stabilisation and Apple's processing. These details remain unconfirmed. Still, if Apple gets the implementation right, the iPhone 18 Pro's most important camera upgrade may not be another megapixel increase. It could be the simple ability to let more light in when the sun goes down.

The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to introduce Apple's first variable-aperture camera, allowing the main lens to physically control incoming light. The upgrade could improve night video by reducing noise, preserving shadow detail and giving Apple more control over exposure.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is getting closer, but buyers outside the US may not be able to get it immediately. Reports suggest Apple could begin selling the iPhone Fold in a limited number of markets, with supply constraints potentially delaying its arrival elsewhere by several months. The foldable is expected to be unveiled alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra at Apple’s September event. However, production problems, high costs and limited supply are reportedly complicating the launch.

First look at the iPhone Fold dummy unit. It doesn't look like Apple will offer multiple colors, with white currently appearing to be the only option. What do you think? pic.twitter.com/olMzm6t6Ts— Sonny Dickson (@SonnyDickson) June 7, 2026

Why could the iPhone Fold be delayed?
A China-based supplier cited by Australian outlet Channel News reportedly said Apple is dealing with supply, testing and pricing problems. Production verification testing has also allegedly uncovered issues involving the hinge and foldable display. Mass production was reportedly planned for June but was pushed to early August, with the timeline facing further changes. The claims have not been confirmed by Apple. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has separately suggested that the foldable may not be immediately available worldwide because of limited supply. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has also indicated that the device could ship after the iPhone 18 Pro models. That would not be entirely new for Apple. The iPhone X, unveiled in September 2017, went on sale later than the iPhone 8.
US buyers could get priority
Reports suggest Apple could manufacture around 7 million iPhone Fold units during the second half of 2026, with the US expected to be among the first markets to receive the device. China could follow, while markets such as Australia may have to wait. The reported delay for some countries could be two to three months. It remains unclear whether India would be included in the first wave or a later rollout. For Apple, the limited supply would come at a crucial moment. The company is entering a foldable market already dominated by Samsung, which recently expanded its own foldable range.
The biggest question may be the price
Supply is not the only concern. The iPhone Fold is expected to be significantly more expensive than conventional iPhones. That comes as smartphone manufacturers face higher component costs, particularly for memory chips as demand from AI data centres continues to rise. Apple has not confirmed the iPhone Fold, its price or its release schedule. Until the company takes the stage, the reported September 8 unveiling and possible staggered rollout remain unconfirmed. But if the reports prove accurate, seeing Apple’s first foldable iPhone in September may be easier than actually buying one.

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could debut in September but reportedly launch in limited markets first. Supply, testing and pricing issues may delay availability elsewhere by two to three months, although Apple has yet to confirm the device or its rollout plans.

Apple has introduced a major restructuring of its App Store fee structure for developers in the European Union to comply with the European Commission's ongoing enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The changes introduce alternative business terms, giving developers more flexibility regarding fee models, core technology fees, and distribution options outside the traditional App Store framework.

How are camera AirPods different from Meta glasses?
The key difference between the two is that while Meta can take photos of anything the user wants, AirPods will simply "capture visual information in low resolution." Meta glasses are reportedly vulnerable to being broken into by hackers who can use them to secretly take photos and videos of unsuspecting people. Even though the AirPods will not have the exact functions as Meta's glasses, they are also bound to trigger concerns over being misused to secretly capture information. Apple generally doesn't compromise with used privacy and is expected to keep AirPods such that there are no violations. Nevertheless, AI-powered cameras are bound to become a problem in the coming time, especially after reaching things like sunglasses and now earphones.

Apple AirPods could soon be available with an in-built camera, triggering privacy concerns. MacRumors has now dug up a video that pretty much confirms that these earpieces are coming. The short clip shows the problem with the AirPods.

Germany’s Federal Cartel Office has pushed Apple to change its App Tracking Transparency rules after finding that Apple’s own apps received more favourable consent prompts than third-party apps. Apple will redesign the prompts to make them more neutral and give developers more flexibility in explaining personalised advertising.

Apple may be preparing to give AirPods a pair of eyes. A short video discovered inside the macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate appears to show an unreleased pair of AirPods with cameras using Apple’s Visual Intelligence technology. In the demonstration, a person wearing the earbuds holds up a book. The system appears to recognise the book’s title, with the accompanying message suggesting users could ask Apple’s AI to save things they see for later. The leak is significant because it suggests Apple’s camera-equipped AirPods are moving beyond an experimental idea. However, Apple has not announced the product or confirmed that the leaked demonstration represents a final commercial device.
What can Apple’s camera AirPods actually see?
The leaked video does not show where the cameras are positioned on the earbuds. The AirPods shown also look broadly similar to Apple's existing designs. The important change is what the cameras appear to be used for. Rather than acting like tiny conventional cameras for taking photos and videos, the leaked demonstration suggests they would act as visual sensors for Visual Intelligence. That could allow AI to understand objects and information in the wearer's surroundings. Apple already describes Visual Intelligence as a way to learn about objects and places around you and take actions based on what the camera sees. That means future AirPods could potentially let users ask Siri questions about something they are looking at without having to take out an iPhone.
There is a strange warning about your hair
The leaked demonstration contains another revealing detail.Users could apparently receive a warning if something is blocking the AirPods' cameras. The message shown in the video tells the wearer to ensure the earbuds are not covered to get accurate information about their surroundings. That suggests Apple may be treating the cameras as an always-available input for AI rather than a feature users activate only to take pictures. The approach could make AirPods part of Apple's wider push towards ambient AI technology that can understand a user's surroundings without requiring them to constantly interact with a screen.
B790 and B798: Apple may be testing more than one version
According to MacRumors, the leaked software contains references to an unreleased Apple product with the codename B790, along with the demonstration video. Another camera-equipped AirPods project, reportedly codenamed B798, has also surfaced in previous reports. That does not necessarily mean both products will reach consumers. Whatever the final name, the bigger story is what Apple appears to be building: AirPods that do not simply hear the world around you, but can potentially understand what they see.

Trump team urges Apple to avoid Chinese memory chips amid trade tensions: Report

Apple's long-awaited AI-powered Siri could arrive with a subscription twist. During what was his final earnings call as Apple's CEO, Tim Cook suggested that users who rely heavily on the upgraded Siri may eventually have to pay for additional AI computing through the company's iCloud+ plans. The comments offer one of the clearest indications yet of how Apple plans to monetise its biggest AI upgrade, as the company prepares to launch the new Siri more broadly later this year with iOS 27.
Apple could follow the ChatGPT subscription model
Cook said Apple expects many users to rely heavily on Siri AI and is exploring upgrade options through iCloud+. "We do believe there will be people that want to use it a lot," Cook said, adding that users may be able to purchase additional AI capacity as part of higher iCloud+ subscription tiers. However, he stressed that the plans are still being evaluated. The approach mirrors rivals such as OpenAI and Anthropic, which offer free AI access while charging subscribers for higher usage limits and premium capabilities.
Siri AI arrives at a crucial moment
The upgraded Siri is one of Apple's most important AI projects. It is already available in the iOS 27 beta and is expected to roll out publicly this autumn. The launch comes after repeated delays that allowed competitors such as ChatGPT, Claude and Google's Gemini to establish themselves as leading AI assistants. Apple has even integrated a customised version of Google's Gemini into Siri for certain AI tasks, highlighting the company's efforts to close the gap in generative AI.
Apple faces growing AI and hardware pressures
The Siri overhaul also arrives as Apple navigates rising AI infrastructure costs and industry-wide component shortages. The company recently increased prices for several Mac and iPad models, while avoiding changes to current iPhone pricing. AI-related demand for memory chips has driven up manufacturing costs across the technology industry. Meanwhile, Apple settled a class-action lawsuit over how it marketed AI features for the iPhone 16 after delays to its Siri rollout. Whether advanced Siri AI ultimately becomes part of a paid iCloud+ tier remains undecided. But Cook's comments suggest Apple is increasingly looking at subscriptions not just hardware sales to fund its next generation of AI services.

Apple CEO Tim Cook has indicated that advanced Siri AI features may eventually require an iCloud+ subscription for heavy users. The move would align Apple's strategy with OpenAI and Anthropic as it prepares to launch its biggest Siri upgrade with iOS 27.

Apple's next premium iPhones could come with a much higher price tag than many buyers expected. According to a new report, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max could cost $250 to $300 more than the current iPhone 17 Pro lineup when they launch later this year. If accurate, it would mark one of Apple's biggest-ever price increases for its flagship smartphones. The latest prediction comes from GF Securities analyst Jeff Pu, whose research note, cited by MacRumors, points to rising manufacturing costs as the biggest reason behind the expected increase.
Why the iPhone 18 Pro may cost more
The biggest factor is Apple's expected move to TSMC's 2nm A20 processor. The next-generation chip is widely expected to deliver faster performance, stronger on-device AI capabilities and better power efficiency. However, it is also believed to be significantly more expensive to manufacture than today's 3nm chips. The report also points to rising DRAM and NAND memory prices, along with higher component costs caused by the global AI infrastructure boom. As chipmakers prioritise AI hardware, smartphone manufacturers are facing growing pressure across the supply chain. Jeff Pu believes these higher production costs could leave Apple with little room to absorb the increase without passing some of it on to customers.
More upgrades expected
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is expected to receive several major hardware improvements alongside the new processor. Leaks suggest Apple will retain the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch displays for the Pro and Pro Max but introduce a smaller Dynamic Island, brighter LTPO+ OLED panels and improved battery life. Camera upgrades are also expected. Reports suggest Apple could introduce a variable-aperture main camera, giving users greater control over depth of field and improving low-light photography. The Pro Max may also feature a larger battery and Apple's next-generation C2 modem, offering faster connectivity and improved power efficiency.
September launch expected
Apple has not confirmed any details, but multiple reports suggest the company will unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and its first foldable iPhone during its traditional September launch event. If the latest pricing leak proves accurate, buyers may have to pay substantially more for Apple's next-generation flagship. Whether consumers accept the higher prices could depend on whether the hardware upgrades are significant enough to justify the premium. Until Apple makes an official announcement, all pricing and specifications remain based on leaks and analyst reports.

One of the biggest reasons people continue using an iPhone for four, five or even six years is its long-lasting performance. While many smartphones become slower over time, older iPhones often remain fast enough for everyday tasks. This isn't down to a single feature. Instead, Apple combines powerful chips, software optimisation and long-term updates to keep its devices running smoothly.
Apple designs both the chip and the software
Unlike most smartphone brands, Apple designs its own A-series processors while also developing iOS. Because the hardware and software are built together, iOS is carefully optimised for the processor, memory and battery inside each iPhone. This allows apps to open quickly, animations to stay smooth and multitasking to remain responsive even after years of use. Instead of adding extra software layers, Apple keeps iOS closely integrated with its hardware.
Long software support helps performance
Apple is known for providing software updates for many years after a device launches. These updates do more than add new features. They also include performance improvements, bug fixes and security patches that help older iPhones remain stable and reliable. Many Android manufacturers have improved their software support in recent years, but Apple's update policy remains one of the longest in the smartphone industry.Fast storage and memory management matter tooPerformance is not only about the processor.Apple uses high-speed storage, efficient memory management and background app controls to reduce slowdowns over time. Apps that are not being used are managed efficiently, helping the phone stay responsive without consuming unnecessary resources. Developers also optimise many popular apps for iOS first because Apple supports a smaller number of devices than the Android ecosystem.
Battery health also affects speed
Battery ageing can influence smartphone performance. When an iPhone's battery becomes worn, iOS may temporarily reduce peak performance to prevent unexpected shutdowns. Apple introduced Battery Health tools so users can monitor battery condition and replace the battery if needed. A new battery can often make an older iPhone feel significantly faster.
Why iPhones often age better
Apple's strategy focuses on long-term optimisation rather than simply adding bigger specifications each year. Powerful custom chips, years of software updates, efficient memory management and close integration between hardware and software all help iPhones remain fast well beyond their launch date. That is why many users continue using the same iPhone for several years without feeling the need to upgrade every year.

Apple's secret chip: The real reason iPhones stay smooth for years

Apple has released dozens of iPhone models over the past 19 years, but one generation remains its biggest commercial success. According to industry estimates from market research firms including Omdia and CIRP, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are still Apple's best-selling smartphones ever, with combined lifetime sales estimated at more than 220 million units.Apple does not officially publish lifetime sales figures for individual iPhone models. However, analysts widely agree that the iPhone 6 family remains the company's biggest seller.
Why did the iPhone 6 become such a huge success?
When Apple introduced the iPhone 6 in September 2014, it marked one of the biggest changes in iPhone history. After years of offering smaller displays, Apple finally launched larger 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch screens. At the time, many Android smartphones had already moved towards bigger displays, and millions of Apple users had delayed upgrading while waiting for larger iPhones. The iPhone 6 arrived at the right moment, creating one of the strongest upgrade cycles Apple had ever seen. The phones also introduced a slimmer aluminium design, improved cameras, the A8 processor, Apple Pay and faster LTE connectivity, making them attractive upgrades for both existing iPhone users and first-time buyers.
The launch that helped Apple reach new heights
The success of the iPhone 6 went far beyond smartphone sales. The launch helped Apple report record quarterly revenue and profits. It also strengthened the company's position in key markets such as China, where demand for larger-screen smartphones was growing rapidly. Industry analysts believe the iPhone 6 series generated tens of billions of dollars in revenue and became one of the products that established Apple as one of the world's most valuable companies.
Which iPhones sold the most after the iPhone 6?
Several newer models have also recorded impressive sales. The iPhone 11, iPhone XR, iPhone 7 series and iPhone 12 family all ranked among Apple's best-selling devices, thanks to improved cameras, better battery life and wider 5G adoption. However, none has surpassed the estimated lifetime sales of the iPhone 6 generation.
Why hasn't Apple broken the record yet?
Today's iPhone lineup is much broader than it was a decade ago. Apple now sells standard, Plus, Pro and Pro Max models at the same time. As demand is spread across multiple devices, it has become more difficult for a single iPhone model to achieve the extraordinary sales numbers recorded by the iPhone 6 family. Even so, newer iPhones often generate higher revenue because of their premium prices. That means Apple's latest flagship devices can earn more money despite selling fewer units than the record-setting iPhone 6.

The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus remain Apple's best-selling smartphones ever, with industry estimates putting lifetime sales above 220 million units. Larger displays, strong demand and a major upgrade cycle helped make them Apple's biggest commercial success.

The phones also introduced a slimmer aluminium design, improved cameras, the A8 processor, Apple Pay and faster LTE connectivity, making them attractive upgrades for both existing iPhone users and first-time buyers. The launch that helped Apple reach new heights The success of the iPhone 6 went far beyond smartphone sales.

Whether you're planning to upgrade next year or keep your phone for five years, resale value matters. It affects how much money you can recover when it's time to buy a new device. For years, market research has shown that iPhones generally retain their value better than most Android smartphones. While both lose value over time, Apple's devices often depreciate at a slower rate.
So, why does this happen?
Long software support keeps older iPhones relevant. One of Apple's biggest advantages is long-term software support. Most iPhones receive major iOS updates for several years after launch. Security updates also continue long after a device is released. This means an older iPhone can still run the latest apps, receive new features and remain secure. For second-hand buyers, that makes an older iPhone a safer purchase than a device that may no longer receive updates.
Strong demand drives higher resale prices
Apple has built one of the world's strongest consumer brands. Every year, millions of buyers look for refurbished or pre-owned iPhones because they offer access to Apple's ecosystem at a lower price. That steady demand helps keep resale prices high. Many Android brands release dozens of new models every year, which increases competition in the second-hand market and often pushes prices down more quickly.
Build quality and performance help devices last longer
Apple designs its hardware and software together, allowing older iPhones to remain smooth and reliable for everyday tasks. Premium materials, durable construction and custom A-series chips also help extend the usable life of the device. A phone that still performs well after several years naturally attracts more buyers. Battery replacement services and widespread repair support also make older iPhones easier to keep in use.
Apple's product strategy plays a role
Apple launches a relatively small number of iPhone models each year. By comparison, the Android market includes hundreds of devices across different price segments. New models arrive frequently, making older phones feel outdated more quickly. Apple's slower product cycle helps older iPhones remain familiar and desirable for longer, supporting stronger resale values.
Is buying an iPhone cheaper in the long run?
Although iPhones usually cost more upfront, they often return more money when sold or traded in. That higher resale value can reduce the overall cost of ownership over several years. Combined with long software support, strong demand and reliable performance, it is one of the reasons many buyers continue choosing iPhones despite their premium price.

iPhones usually hold their resale value better than Android phones because of long software support, strong customer demand, premium build quality and Apple's tightly connected ecosystem.
