When people look at smartphone market share, Android appears to be the clear winner. Google's operating system powers around 70 per cent of smartphones worldwide, while Apple's iPhone accounts for a much smaller share. Yet year after year, Apple earns far more profit than most Android phone makers combined. So how does the company achieve this despite selling fewer phones? The answer lies in Apple's premium strategy, ecosystem and growing services business.
Apple focuses on premium phones
Unlike Android, which includes hundreds of manufacturers selling phones across every price range, Apple mainly targets the premium segment. Many Android brands compete aggressively in the budget and mid-range markets, where profit margins are often very small. Apple, on the other hand, sells most iPhones at premium prices. That means it earns significantly more profit from every device it sells. Industry analysts at Counterpoint Research have repeatedly reported that Apple captures the majority of global smartphone operating profits despite shipping fewer devices than the Android ecosystem.
The iPhone is only the beginning
Apple also makes money long after someone buys an iPhone. Many users subscribe to services such as iCloud+, Apple Music, Apple TV+, Apple Arcade and AppleCare. The company also earns revenue through the App Store, where developers pay commissions on many digital purchases. This creates recurring income that continues for years after the original phone sale. The Apple ecosystem keeps users loyalAnother reason is customer retention. Many iPhone users also own an Apple Watch, AirPods, iPad or Mac. These devices work together through features like AirDrop, Handoff, iCloud synchronisation and Continuity. Because everything is connected, customers are more likely to remain within Apple's ecosystem when buying their next device. This loyalty reduces marketing costs and helps Apple maintain strong demand even without leading global shipment volumes.
Profit matters more than market share
Selling the most devices does not always mean earning the most money. Android's large market share comes from many companies competing across different price points, while Apple focuses on fewer models with higher average selling prices. Combined with services revenue, strong brand loyalty and efficient hardware-software integration, this strategy allows Apple to generate industry-leading profits even with fewer smartphone shipments. For Apple, success has never been about selling the most phones it has been about creating long-term value from every customer.

Android powers most smartphones worldwide, but Apple earns the largest share of industry profits. Premium pricing, strong customer loyalty, a connected ecosystem and fast-growing services help Apple make more money despite selling fewer phones.

Apple vs Android: Why does Apple sell fewer phones than Android but make more money?

Apple could be preparing one of its busiest product launches in recent years. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is working on a redesigned entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, a refreshed iPad Pro lineup and its next-generation M7 chip, with several products expected to arrive during the first half of 2027.While Apple has not confirmed these devices, the report suggests the company is accelerating its Apple Silicon roadmap as artificial intelligence becomes a bigger focus across its hardware ecosystem.
A redesigned MacBook Pro could be the biggest change
The most noticeable update may come to Apple's entry-level MacBook Pro. Bloomberg reports that Apple is developing a redesigned 14-inch model, internally codenamed K104, which could become the first major design refresh for the lower-end MacBook Pro in several years. The laptop is expected to adopt design elements from Apple's future premium MacBook Pro models, which are also rumoured to include touch-screen displays. Reports have also suggested Apple is exploring a pill-shaped camera cut-out similar to the Dynamic Island found on recent iPhones, although it remains unclear whether the entry-level model will include this feature. Before that redesign arrives, Bloomberg says Apple is expected to launch another MacBook Pro later this year featuring the existing design and a base M6 processor.
iPad Pro may focus on performance instead of a new look
Apple is also said to be testing four new iPad Pro models in the familiar 11-inch and 13-inch sizes. Rather than introducing a new design, the tablets are expected to receive internal upgrades aimed at improving speed and efficiency. Previous reports have suggested Apple is testing vapour chamber cooling technology to help maintain performance during demanding workloads such as video editing, gaming and AI applications.Bloomberg did not specify whether the devices will use M6 or M7 processors.
Apple's M7 chip could power the next AI era
Another key part of Apple's reported roadmap is the arrival of its M7 processor. The next-generation Apple Silicon chip is expected to deliver faster performance while improving on-device artificial intelligence capabilities. As AI features become more demanding across macOS and iPadOS, Apple appears to be optimising its chips to process more tasks locally rather than relying on cloud computing.
Why 2027 could be a major year for Apple
If Apple's current roadmap remains unchanged, the first half of 2027 could see launches across several product categories, including new Macs, iPads and potentially other devices such as the second-generation iPhone Air and an entry-level iPhone 18. Although these products remain unannounced, the reported plans suggest Apple is preparing a broad refresh that combines redesigned hardware with more powerful Apple Silicon, reflecting the company's growing focus on AI, performance and long-term ecosystem improvements.

Britain's Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has proposed major reforms that could reshape how Apple and Google operate their app stores in the UK. The regulator wants developers to be allowed to direct users to alternative payment methods outside Apple's App Store and Google Play, potentially reducing commission fees and boosting competition.

The proposals could also pave the way for UK fintech firms to build rival digital wallets on Apple's iPhone ecosystem. If implemented, the changes would mark one of the biggest regulatory challenges yet to Apple and Google's control over mobile app payments.

If recent reports are accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro may look very similar to its predecessor. While some users expect a completely new design every year, Apple's history suggests that familiar hardware is often part of a much bigger strategy.Instead of redesigning the iPhone annually, Apple usually spreads major changes over several product generations. The company often chooses to improve what's inside the device before making noticeable changes to its appearance.
Apple has always favoured gradual improvements
Apple's product philosophy has long focused on refinement rather than frequent redesigns. Many iPhone generations have kept a similar appearance while introducing faster processors, better cameras, longer battery life and new software features. This approach allows Apple to improve reliability while giving developers and accessory makers a consistent platform. It also helps users upgrade without having to relearn how their devices work. Rather than chasing dramatic visual changes, Apple often prioritises the overall experience. Manufacturing becomes simpler and more efficient Keeping a familiar design can also benefit manufacturing. When Apple reuses parts of an existing design, suppliers can continue using established production lines instead of building entirely new manufacturing systems. This reduces production risks, improves assembly efficiency and helps Apple manufacture millions of devices at a faster pace. A mature design also tends to have fewer production issues, which is important when launching new iPhones in large volumes worldwide.Internal upgrades often matter more than the designReports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro could receive meaningful upgrades inside the device, even if its appearance changes only slightly. Expected improvements include the new A20 processor, faster on-device AI through Apple Intelligence, camera enhancements, improved power efficiency and better thermal management. These upgrades affect how the phone performs every day, even if they are less visible than a redesigned exterior. For many users, faster performance, longer battery life and smarter AI features may have a greater impact than a different camera layout or new frame design.
Apple balances innovation with long-term value
Apple also designs products with long software support in mind. By evolving hardware gradually, the company can optimise iOS, improve reliability and maintain compatibility across several generations of iPhones. This strategy also supports Apple's wider ecosystem, where accessories such as cases, chargers and MagSafe products often remain compatible across multiple devices. If the current reports prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro may not be remembered for a bold new design. Instead, it could show how Apple continues to focus on steady improvements in performance, efficiency and intelligence while keeping the overall experience familiar for millions of users.

Why does every iPhone look similar?

Apple has not officially announced the price of the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max. However, several analysts now believe the company could increase prices when the new phones arrive later this year. The reason is not just one expensive component. Instead, several cost pressures are coming together at the same time. Memory chips have become much more expensive. One of the biggest reasons is the sharp rise in memory prices. The AI boom has created huge demand for DRAM and NAND flash memory, as cloud companies buy massive amounts of memory for AI servers. That has pushed prices higher for consumer electronics as well. Industry analysts estimate Apple could pay significantly more for the same amount of memory than it did last year, increasing the cost of every iPhone it builds.
AI hardware is becoming more powerful
Modern smartphones are no longer designed only for apps and cameras. They are increasingly built to run AI features directly on the device. The iPhone 18 Pro is widely expected to feature a faster A20 chip, a more capable Neural Engine and additional hardware to support Apple Intelligence. These upgrades improve AI performance but also make the phone more expensive to manufacture.Manufacturing costs continue to rise Even if Apple keeps a familiar design, manufacturing costs continue to increase. Higher labour costs, stricter quality standards, advanced production techniques and more complex camera systems all add to the overall cost of building each device. Apple has also continued expanding manufacturing outside China, investing heavily in countries such as India while maintaining high production standards. Tariffs and global trade can affect pricing Trade policies also remain an important factor. Tariffs on imported components or finished products can increase Apple's overall costs depending on where devices are manufactured and sold. Although Apple works to diversify its supply chain, changing trade rules can still influence pricing decisions across global markets.
Apple may absorb some costs but not all
Apple has historically avoided frequent iPhone price increases by improving supply-chain efficiency and negotiating with suppliers. However, recent price increases for MacBooks and iPads show the company is becoming less willing to absorb rising component costs on its own. That does not guarantee the iPhone 18 Pro will become more expensive, as Apple has yet to announce official pricing. But if memory costs remain high and AI hardware becomes more advanced, analysts believe higher prices are becoming increasingly likely.

The iPhone 18 Pro could launch with a higher price as Apple faces rising memory costs, AI hardware upgrades, manufacturing expenses and global trade pressures. Apple has not confirmed pricing, but analysts say several factors are pushing costs higher.

iPhone 18 Pro price rise? Here's what's pushing Apple's costs higher

Apple's A20 chip is expected to arrive with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max later this year. While Apple has not officially revealed every detail, industry reports suggest the processor will be built using a newer manufacturing process, bringing improvements in speed, efficiency and artificial intelligence. But what do those changes actually mean if you use your iPhone every day?
Apps could feel quicker and smoother
The first thing most people notice after upgrading is how quickly apps respond. With the A20 chip, everyday apps such as Messages, Safari, Instagram, Maps and Camera are expected to launch faster and switch more smoothly in the background. Heavy apps may also stay open longer without needing to reload. The improvement may not always be dramatic, but daily use should feel more responsive. Gaming could become more stable Mobile games continue to demand more power every year.A faster graphics processor could help games run at higher frame rates while reducing lag during longer gaming sessions. More efficient hardware may also help keep temperatures lower, allowing performance to remain stable instead of slowing down after several minutes.
Better battery life without a bigger battery
One of the biggest advantages of newer chips is efficiency rather than raw speed. If reports are accurate, the A20 should consume less power while delivering better performance. That could translate into longer battery life for web browsing, video streaming, navigation, gaming and everyday multitasking without increasing battery size.Photos and videos may improve automatically Modern smartphone photography depends heavily on AI and image processing. The A20 is expected to process images faster, improve low-light photography and deliver better HDR performance. Video recording could also benefit from smoother stabilisation and quicker processing for high-resolution formats. Many improvements happen automatically without users changing any settings.AI could become much more useful Artificial intelligence is likely to be one of the biggest focuses of the A20 chip. A more powerful Neural Engine would allow Apple Intelligence features to run faster on the device, helping with writing assistance, photo editing, voice processing, notifications and Siri requests while keeping more data on the phone instead of sending it to cloud servers. This could make AI responses feel faster and improve privacy.
Is the A20 upgrade worth waiting for?
For users with relatively new iPhones, the difference may not feel revolutionary. However, people upgrading from devices that are three or four years old are likely to notice improvements across almost every part of the experience from app performance and battery life to gaming, photography and AI features. Rather than one headline-grabbing upgrade, the A20 appears to focus on making the entire iPhone experience smoother, faster and more efficient throughout the day.

Apple, Microsoft raise prices as AI memory costs soar

Apple has hinted that the recent price increases for selected MacBooks and iPads may only be the beginning. The company says rapidly rising memory and storage costs, fuelled by the global AI boom, are putting unprecedented pressure on consumer electronics manufacturers. While Apple has not confirmed which products will be affected next, industry analysts believe iPhones could be among them. The warning comes after Apple acknowledged that it has "reached a point" where it needs to begin raising prices on more products, suggesting the latest increases may not be the last.
Why are prices increasing?
According to Apple, demand for memory and storage chips has surged as companies building AI data centres purchase huge volumes of components."The consumer electronics industry is facing an unprecedented challenge," the company said in a statement reported by multiple media outlets. Apple added that it had "never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly." Research firm Counterpoint Research has also reported sharp increases in memory and storage prices over recent quarters, adding to manufacturing costs across the industry.
Could iPhones become more expensive?
Apple has not officially announced an iPhone price increase. However, media estimates suggest that higher component costs could add roughly $200 to the production cost of each iPhone. That does not automatically mean retail prices will increase by the same amount, but analysts believe Apple may eventually pass at least part of the higher costs on to consumers. It also remains unclear whether any future price increase would apply only to the upcoming iPhone 18 series or extend to existing models.
AI is reshaping consumer electronics
Apple is not the only company feeling the impact of the AI boom. As AI infrastructure expands globally, demand for advanced memory chips continues to outpace supply. The company says it is working to find long-term solutions but admits the current situation is unlike anything it has experienced before. For consumers, that could mean higher prices not just for iPhones but potentially for AirPods, Apple Watches and other Apple devices in the months ahead.

Apple could be preparing to enter the fast-growing smart ring market, if the latest leaks are accurate. According to tipster Kosutami, the iPhone maker is developing a wearable called the "iRing" that could eventually compete with devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Ring and Oura Ring. Apple has not confirmed the existence of the product, and the reported project is believed to be in its early stages. Even so, the rumour has attracted attention because Apple has often entered product categories later than its rivals before trying to refine the experience.
What could the Apple iRing do?
The leak does not reveal detailed specifications, but reports suggest the iRing could focus on health and fitness tracking while offering a screen-free alternative to the Apple Watch. Like other smart rings, it could monitor metrics such as heart rate, sleep, activity and overall wellness. It may also integrate closely with Apple's Health app and broader ecosystem, allowing users to access health insights without wearing a smartwatch. Some reports also speculate that Apple could position the ring below the Apple Watch in terms of pricing, making it a more affordable wearable option. However, there is currently no information on pricing, launch dates or hardware specifications.
Apple's growing wearable strategy
The rumoured iRing comes as Apple continues expanding its hardware portfolio beyond smartphones and computers. The company is also widely expected to introduce its first foldable iPhone, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, based on multiple industry reports. Although none of these products have been officially announced, they suggest Apple is preparing one of its biggest hardware refresh cycles in years. The smart ring market has grown rapidly as more consumers look for lightweight health-tracking devices. Samsung entered the segment with the Galaxy Ring, while Oura has established itself as one of the leading brands. If Apple launches the iRing, it would bring one of the world's biggest consumer technology companies into an increasingly competitive category. For now, however, the product remains a rumour until Apple confirms its plans.

Apple is reportedly developing a smart ring called the iRing, according to a new leak. While the product remains unconfirmed, it could offer health tracking, compete with Samsung Galaxy Ring and Oura Ring, and become Apple's next major wearable device.

Apple's next big transformation may not be about artificial intelligence or new hardware categories. Instead, it could be about design. According to a recent report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple is increasingly focused on restoring some of the design culture that helped define the company during the Steve Jobs and Jony Ive era. The discussion comes as John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering and a potential future CEO candidate, is reportedly spending more time with the company's industrial design teams. The development matters because design has historically been one of Apple's biggest strengths, helping shape products from the iPhone and Mac to the Apple Watch.
Why Apple's design culture is back in focus
For years, Apple's design team was among the most influential groups inside the company. During the Steve Jobs era, designers often played a central role in product decisions, while other departments worked around the vision coming from the design studio. That structure began to change after former design chief Jony Ive stepped back from day-to-day leadership and later left the company. According to Gurman's report, Apple's design organisation gradually became less influential over the past decade. Today, Apple reportedly has no executive occupying the kind of senior design leadership position once held by Ive. That shift has led some observers to question whether Apple has lost part of the design-focused culture that helped make its products stand out.
John Ternus and the future of Apple
Ternus is increasingly viewed as one of Apple's most important executives. As head of hardware engineering, he already oversees many of the products that generate the majority of Apple's revenue. According to the report, Ternus recently told employees that Apple would "keep the focus on design", describing it as central to the company's identity. The comments have fuelled speculation that design could regain greater influence if Ternus eventually takes on a larger leadership role. For Apple, the timing is important. The company faces growing competition in smartphones, wearables, AI devices and mixed reality products. A renewed focus on design could help differentiate future products in increasingly crowded markets.
Apple's reported product roadmap for 2026
The report also outlines what could be one of Apple's busiest product periods in years. Among the products reportedly in development are the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, expected to arrive alongside Apple's long-rumoured foldable iPhone. New Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 models are also expected during the same period. Other products reportedly being prepared include:A refreshed entry-level iPad with Apple Intelligence supportAn OLED iPad miniA Home Hub smart home deviceA next-generation iPhone AirExpanded Apple Intelligence-powered home products These launches suggest Apple is continuing to push deeper into AI, smart home technology and new hardware categories.
Looking ahead to the iPhone's 20th anniversary
Perhaps the most interesting part of the report focuses on 2027. Apple is reportedly planning special devices to celebrate the iPhone's 20th anniversary. These could include an iPhone 20 Pro and iPhone 20 Pro Max, alongside a second-generation foldable iPhone. The company is also said to be developing several ambitious products, including:Smart glassesAirPods equipped with camerasA tabletop robotA redesigned mixed-reality headsetFuture augmented reality devicesIf even part of that roadmap materialises, it could represent one of Apple's most significant periods of innovation since the original iPhone. Apple's challenge is not simply releasing new products. It is convincing consumers that it can still create devices that feel distinctive in a market increasingly filled with similar hardware and AI features. That is why the discussion around design matters. New technologies may attract attention, but Apple's greatest successes have often come from combining technology with thoughtful design. As speculation grows around John Ternus' future inside the company, many industry observers will be watching whether Apple can once again place design at the centre of its strategy. If the reported roadmap is accurate, the next two years could reveal whether that shift is already underway.

From Siri to AI-powered Photos: Key announcements expected at Apple's WWDC 2026

Apple is entering a crucial stage in an ongoing investigation by India’s Competition Commission (CCI). The tech giant is expected to share detailed financial data related to its India operations as regulators assess possible penalties. The information could play a key role in determining whether Apple violated competition rules. The case is now moving closer to a final decision, making this one of the most closely watched regulatory probes involving a global tech company in India.

A proposed Canadian online safety law has triggered a growing confrontation between the government and major technology firms, with Apple, Google, Alphabet and encrypted messaging platform Signal warning that the legislation could weaken digital security and undermine user privacy. Bill C-22 which was introduced by Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government, is currently being debated in Canada’s parliament. The legislation aims to modernise how law enforcement agencies investigate cybercrime, terrorism and national security threats by expanding access to digital communications and user data. It expand the powers of Canadian law enforcement agencies to access digital information during cyber and national security investigations. At the centre of the dispute is encryption, the technology that protects messages, files and cloud data from unauthorised access. End-to-end encryption ensures that only the sender and recipient can read the data, meaning even technology companies themselves cannot access it. Canadian authorities insist the bill is ‘encryption neutral’ and necessary to investigate serious crimes and national security threats more efficiently. However, tech giants argue the legislation could effectively compel firms to create covert ‘backdoors’ into their systems. The firms are now seeking to include judicial oversight and stronger protections for encryption.
What Bill C-22 Would Allow
The bill would require ‘core’ telecommunications and digital service providers to build technical capabilities enabling law enforcement agencies to obtain access to information. It would also mandate the retention of user metadata for up to one year. ALSO READ: Why are thousands of young Chinese applying for shepherd jobs? Under Bill C-22, the federal government could issue orders to companies requiring compliance measures without prior judicial approval. Technology firms argue this creates the possibility of secret orders to build a backdoor into their services or devices without disclosing that backdoor to users or the public. Jeanette Patell, Google Canada’s director of government affairs and public policy, told the House of Commons public safety committee that the proposed powers “could give the government the power to secretly force companies to redesign products, to include invasive surveillance capabilities, and to do so without sufficient safeguards or oversight”.She added that “ministerial orders are not only alarming, but also unnecessary”, arguing Canada already possesses a transparent court-supervised system for lawful access requests.
Why Apple and Google Say Encryption Is at Risk
Apple and Google maintain that no secure method exists to create access points solely for governments while preventing exploitation by malicious actors. “Speaking as an engineer, we do not know of a way to deploy encryption technology that provides access only for the good guys without creating new ways for the bad guys to break in,” Apple’s senior director of user privacy and child safety, Erik Neuenschwander, told MPs. “In other words, when you build a backdoor into an encrypted device, anyone can walk through.” ALSO READ: Oil spikes, airlines stumble, AI stocks soar: The sectors gaining and losing most from the Iran war Neuenschwander pointed to the 2024 Salt Typhoon cyberattack on US government systems, which allegedly exploited lawful access infrastructure. “That law was narrower than Bill C-22,” he warned. “So imagine what could happen if more companies were required to create these vulnerabilities.” Google similarly warned that the legislation “goes well beyond lawful access regimes in other G7 democracies” and risks undermining user trust and privacy protections.
Signal Threatens to Leave Canada
Signal, widely regarded as one of the world’s most secure messaging services, has gone further. Udbhav Tiwari, the company’s vice-president of strategy and global affairs, told The Globe and Mail that Signal “would rather pull out of the country than be compelled to compromise on the privacy promises we have made to our users”. The company fears the legislation could ultimately force encrypted services either to weaken security protections or withdraw entirely from the Canadian market. Apple has already faced a similar confrontation in Britain. Last year, after receiving a secret government demand for access to encrypted cloud-stored data, the company withdrew certain encrypted cloud backup features from the UK market rather than alter its security architecture. ALSO READ: AI beats human forecasters in tournament predicting fate of 30 technology startups
Part of a Wider Global Debate
Canada’s bill mirrors measures introduced elsewhere. Australia enacted laws compelling technology firms to assist authorities in accessing encrypted communications, while Britain’s Investigatory Powers framework has repeatedly drawn criticism from privacy advocates and technology companies. The controversy has now crossed into the United States. US House Chairs Jim Jordan and Brian Mast sent an official letter to Canada’s Minister of Public Safety expressing severe concerns over Canada's proposed cybersecurity legislation, Bill C-22. The letter, sent by the House Judiciary and Foreign Affairs committees, warned that Bill C-22 could “drastically expand Canada’s surveillance and data access powers” and create “significant cross-border risks to the security and data privacy of Americans”. The clash over Bill C-22 ultimately reflects a broader international struggle: how democracies balance national security and criminal investigations with the integrity of digital privacy and encrypted communications. For governments, encrypted platforms can obstruct investigations. For technology companies, any deliberate vulnerability risks becoming a gateway not only for law enforcement, but also for hackers, cybercriminals and hostile states.

She added that “ministerial orders are not only alarming, but also unnecessary”, arguing Canada already possesses a transparent court-supervised system for lawful access requests. Why Apple and Google Say Encryption Is at Risk Apple and Google maintain that no secure method exists to create access points solely for governments while preventing exploitation by malicious actors. Signal Threatens to Leave Canada Signal, widely regarded as one of the world’s most secure messaging services, has gone further. ALSO READ: AI beats human forecasters in tournament predicting fate of 30 technology startups Part of a Wider Global Debate Canada’s bill mirrors measures introduced elsewhere.

The legislation aims to modernise how law enforcement agencies investigate cybercrime, terrorism and national security threats by expanding access to digital communications and user data.

Apple is set for a major leadership transition as John Ternus prepares to take over as CEO, succeeding Tim Cook. After years of steering the tech giant to record highs, Cook is expected to move into the role of Executive Chairman, marking a new chapter for the company. Ternus, known for his role in Apple’s hardware innovation, now faces the challenge of leading one of the world’s most valuable companies into its next phase of growth and competition.

Apple CEO Change: John Ternus To Replace Tim Cook

When Tim Cook became CEO of Apple in 2011, he took charge of a company already known for products like the iPhone and Mac. Over the next decade, Cook focused on expanding Apple’s ecosystem. Instead of relying on one flagship device, the company moved towards a connected system of devices, services and platforms.
Several key product launches and strategy changes defined Apple during his tenure.
Apple Watch and AirPods: Building the wearables businessOne of the biggest shifts under Cook was Apple’s entry into wearables. The Apple Watch, launched in 2015, was the company’s first major new product category after the iPad. It started as a companion to the iPhone but gradually became focused on health and fitness.Features such as ECG monitoring, blood oxygen tracking and fall detection helped it move into healthcare-related use.A year later, Apple introduced AirPods in 2016. At that time, wireless earbuds were not widely used. Apple removed the headphone jack and introduced a fully wireless design. This move helped make wireless audio more common. Over time, features such as spatial audio and improved battery life were added.
iPhone X: A major design shift
In 2017, Apple launched the iPhone X, which marked a major change in smartphone design. It removed the home button and introduced:Edge-to-edge OLED displayFace ID facial recognitionGesture-based navigationThis design later became standard across most smartphones in the industry. After this, Apple also changed its strategy. Instead of launching one iPhone model each year, it introduced multiple variants such as standard, Pro and Pro Max models. This helped the company target different price segments.
Apple Silicon: A key technology transition
In 2020, Apple made a major shift by moving Macs from Intel processors to its own chips, starting with the M1. This transition allowed Apple to control both hardware and software more closely. The result included: Better battery life Faster performance Ability to run iPhone and iPad apps on MacThis move also reduced Apple’s reliance on external chip suppliers and gave it more flexibility in product development.
AirTag and ecosystem expansion
In 2021, Apple launched AirTag, entering the item-tracking category. AirTag works with the Find My network to help users locate everyday objects like keys and bags. It uses Ultra Wideband technology for precise tracking. This product extended Apple’s ecosystem into daily use cases beyond traditional devices.
Vision Pro: Entry into spatial computing
In 2024, Apple introduced the Vision Pro, marking its entry into spatial computing. The headset allows users to interact with apps using:Eye trackingHand gesturesVoice commandsInstead of a traditional screen, it offers a digital interface where apps can be placed in a three-dimensional space. Apple describes this as an “infinite canvas”, allowing users to work across multiple virtual screens.
How Tim Cook changed Apple’s strategy
Under Cook, Apple moved from a product-focused company to an ecosystem-driven business.Key changes included:Expanding into wearablesIntroducing multiple device categoriesBuilding in-house chip technologyStrengthening integration across devicesThis approach helped Apple grow beyond the iPhone and create a connected experience across products. What comes next?As Tim Cook prepares to step down, his legacy will likely be defined by how he expanded Apple’s ecosystem rather than launching a single breakthrough product. From wearables to custom chips and spatial computing, his leadership focused on steady evolution. The next phase for Apple may depend on how these products continue to develop and how the company adapts to new technologies such as artificial intelligence.

Since becoming CEO of Apple Inc. in 2011, Tim Cook has transformed the company from a product-led brand into a deeply integrated ecosystem powerhouse. Apple expanded into wearables, services, chips and spatial computing, creating a connected experience across devices.
