West Virginia US Presidential Election 2024: With less than a week left for Election Day in the United States (November 5), American voters have more or less decided if they are going to choose Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris or her Republican rival Donald Trump to lead the country for the next four years.
Similarly in the US state of West Virginia, voters will head to the polls on Tuesday (Nov 5). West Virginia, which seceded from the state of Virginia in 1863, has four electoral votes.
While West Virginia has shifted between Democratic and Republican candidates over the years, it has become a solid red state since the year 2000 and GOP presidential candidates have been winning by a larger margin in each election.

In 2016, Donald Trump defeated his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton, by 42 per cent in West Virginia.
In the last 50 years or so the state’s population growth has been slower than the rest of the country, which has affected the number of electoral votes it holds. West Virginia once held eight electoral votes, but currently, it holds only four.

Voters in West Virginia will also elect one member to the US Senate to replace Joe Manchin who currently holds the Class I Senate seat. The senator from West Virginia, was a Democrat until recently when he became an Independent candidate.

The candidates running in the general election for the US Senate seat include Glenn Elliott (Democrat) and Jim Justice (Republican).
How many House of Representatives seats are going for election in the state?
On November 5, West Virginians will also vote for two candidates to serve in the US House of Representatives from each of the state’s two US House districts.
Who won the presidential election in the state in 2020?
In 2020, Donald Trump won 545,382 votes (68.6 per cent), while incumbent President Joe Biden managed to garner 235,984 votes (29.7 per cent) in West Virginia.
