Washington US Presidential Election 2024: The 2024 presidential election in the United States recently concluded, with Republican candidate Donald Trump winning 312 electoral votes, well above the 270 mark that a candidate needs to secure to win the presidency. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris won the US state of Washington.

Voters in the US state of Washington headed to the polls on November 5, like the rest of the country. Washington, officially known as the State of Washington or often referred to as Washington state to distinguish it from the US capital (Washington DC) has 12 electoral votes.

While the state has witnessed some back and forth between Democratic and Republican presidential candidates over the years, Washington is now considered a solid blue state.

Since 1988, Washington state has voted for every Democratic presidential candidate from Michael Dukakis who ran against George HW Bush (Republican) to incumbent President Joe Biden who won the state by a large margin against Donald Trump in 2020.

According to a pre-election poll conducted by Public Policy Polling of North Carolina, Kamala Harris had a comfortable lead over Donald Trump in Washington state with 55 per cent of those polled saying that they would vote for the vice president.

How many Senate seats went for election in the state? Who are the candidates?

Voters in Washington state also headed to the polls to elect one candidate to serve in the US Senate. Two senators represent Washington on Capitol Hill, and prior to the election, both seats were held by Democrats. 

This continued following the win of incumbent Senator Maria Cantwell, a Democrat, who has held office for four terms and ran for reelection against Republican Raul Garcia. 

Following the 2024 election, Cantwell won the senate seat with 59.6 per cent of votes. She previously served in the state House of Representatives (1987-1993) and represented Washington at the US House on Capitol Hill from 1993 to 1995. 

Meanwhile, Garcia, an emergency room doctor, had no elected experience, but he did run for governor in 2020 and won 5.4 per cent of the vote.

How many House of Representatives seats went for election in the state?

Voters in Washington state also elected 10 candidates to serve in the US House of Representatives from each of the state’s 10 House districts. 

According to the Associated Press, the Democrats won eight seats – Suzan DelBene (WA 1), Rick Larsen (WA 2), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA 3), Emily Randall (WA 6), Pramila Jayapal (WA 7), Kim Schrier (WA 8), Adam Smith (WA 9), and Marilyn Strickland (WA 10). 

Meanwhile, the Republicans managed to secure two – Dan Newhouse (WA 4) and Michael Baumgartner (WA 5).

Who won the presidential election in the state in 2020?

In 2020, President Biden won Washington state with 2,369,612 votes (58 per cent), while Trump managed to garner some 1,584,651 votes (38.8 per cent). 

Results of 2024 election

The incumbent US Vice President Harris won Washington state’s 12 electoral votes with 20,98,796 votes (58.1 per cent) while her Republican rival Trump managed to garner some 14,07,145 votes (38.9 per cent).
