US 'evaluating' amendments sought by Hamas in Gaza ceasefire proposal

The United States said that it has started “evaluating” the formal response sent by Hamas to their Gaza ceasefire proposal.
US Secretary of StateAntony Blinken has been making efforts to channel global support for a UN Security Council resolution which supports the proposal of a ceasefire between the Palestinian militant group and Israel.
A Hamas official on Tuesday (June 11) said that they submitted a response to Egyptian and Qatari mediators which sought some “amendments” and added that ensuring a “complete stop” to the war was their priority.
Meanwhile, Hamas spokesperson Jihad Taha said that the response included “amendments that confirm the ceasefire, withdrawal, reconstruction and [prisoner] exchange”.

On Tuesday (June 11), US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby informed the journalists that Washington received the reply from Hamas and was “evaluating it right now".

On the second day of his Middle East visit, Blinken said that Israel’s Prime MinisterBenjamin Netanyahu “reaffirmed his commitment” to the proposal.
Blinken held talks with Israeli opposition leaders on Tuesday (June 11) and also held discussions with the families of the hostages before he travelled to Jordan to hold an emergency summit on humanitarian aid for Gaza.
In the Gaza Strip, the population has suffered massive displacement and more than a million people are on the brink of famine.
Speaking at a conference, Blinken announced an extra $404mnin funding for humanitarian aid forGaza and appealed to other countries to increase donations.
US unveils ceasefire deal for Israel and Hamas
US President Joe Biden unveiled the ceasefire deal at the end of May and it was approved by the United Nations on Monday (June 10).

The deal was presented by Biden as an Israeli initiative as he said that the ceasefire proposal which didn't work earlier was a“non-starter”.
The proposal called for an initial exchange of elderly, sick or female hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees held by Israel.
The ceasefire is aimed at permanently endinghostilities and ensurethat all hostages are released in the second phase.
