US Secretary of State&nbsp;Antony Blinken has been making efforts to channel global support for a UN Security Council resolution which supports the proposal of a ceasefire between the Palestinian militant group and Israel.

A Hamas official on Tuesday (June 11) said that they submitted a response to Egyptian and Qatari mediators which sought some “amendments” and added that ensuring a “complete stop” to the war was their priority.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Hamas spokesperson Jihad Taha said that the response included “amendments that confirm the ceasefire, withdrawal, reconstruction and [prisoner] exchange”.

On Tuesday (June 11), US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby informed the journalists that Washington received the reply from Hamas and was “evaluating it right now".&nbsp;

On the second day of his Middle East visit, Blinken said that Israel’s Prime Minister&nbsp;Benjamin Netanyahu “reaffirmed his commitment” to the proposal.

Blinken held talks with Israeli opposition leaders on Tuesday (June 11) and also held discussions with the families of the hostages before he travelled to Jordan to hold an emergency summit on humanitarian aid for Gaza.&nbsp;

In the Gaza Strip, the population has suffered massive displacement and more than a million people are on the brink of famine.

Speaking at a conference, Blinken announced an extra $404mn&nbsp;in funding for humanitarian aid for&nbsp;Gaza and appealed to other countries to increase donations.

The deal was presented by Biden as an Israeli initiative as he said that the ceasefire proposal which didn't work earlier was a&nbsp;“non-starter”.

The proposal called for an initial exchange of elderly, sick or female hostages in exchange for Palestinian detainees held by Israel.&nbsp;

The ceasefire is aimed at permanently ending&nbsp;hostilities and ensure&nbsp;that all hostages are released in the second phase.&nbsp;

The country has been facing unrest over the issues surrounding its political system which many have called corrupt.&nbsp;

More than 560 protesters and security personnel have lost their lives since 2019 amid the wave of unrest, reported Reuters. The amendments increase the size of electoral districts and reverse key articles passed ahead of the 2021 federal election which would now lead to redrawing of electoral maps to have Iraq return to one electoral district per each governorate.&nbsp;

The bill was passed by a 206-12 vote in the 329-seat parliament, while others were absent during the hours-long session. The vote which began late Sunday had previously been stalled for weeks by several Iraqi political blocs and independent parliamentarians who have rejected this amendment.&nbsp;

Independent MPs who objected to the law, staged a walkout during the previous session, causing it to be postponed over a lack of quorum. The lawmakers opposing the bills&nbsp;did something similar overnight as they began protesting and disturbed the count before&nbsp;security forces escorted them out of the parliament, reported Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

“Large parties controlling parliament plan to consolidate their powers and remove independents. They want to smash us,” said independent MP Hadi al-Salami, as per Reuters. The amendments also come after anti-government protests which demanded fairer election law and the ouster of Iraq’s ruling elite. According to media reports, on Saturday, hundreds of protesters took to the streets of Baghdad against the new election law amendments.

Iraq’s parliament passes controversial election law amendments

The Supreme Court on Wednesday once again refused to stay amendments to the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/scst-act-we-are-not-against-it-says-supreme-court-but-refuses-to-cancel-earlier-order-128083">SC/ST Act</a> that restored the no anticipatory bail provision and said all matters including the <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/supreme-court-to-consider-listing-of-centres-review-petitions-challenging-scst-act-amendments-together-192688">Centre's review petition</a> will be heard on February 19.

A bench headed by Justice UU Lalit said the issue requires hearing in detail and it will be appropriate if all matters are heard on February 19.

The bench refused to stay the amendments to the SC/ST Act after senior advocate Vikas Singh, appearing for one of the petitioners who had challenged the changes made to the Act, sought an immediate stay on it.

The apex court had on January 25 said it will consider listing the Centre's review and petitions challenging the amendments to the SC/ ST Act 2018, together before an appropriate bench.

The top court had earlier refused to stay the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2018 which restored the provision that no anticipatory bail be granted to the accused.&nbsp;

Parliament on August 9 last year had passed a bill to overturn the apex court order relating to certain safeguards against arrest under the SC and ST law.

On March 20, 2018, the apex court had taken note of the rampant misuse of the stringent SC/ST Act against government servants and private individuals and said there would be no immediate arrest on any complaint filed under the law.

The top court had earlier said that the new amendments to the SC/ST law passed by Parliament cannot be stayed and had sought the Centre's response to pleas challenging the provisions.

The pleas have sought a declaration of the new amendments to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act as ultra vires.

The amendments rule out any provision for anticipatory bail for a person accused of atrocities against SC/STs, notwithstanding any court order.

They provide that no preliminary inquiry will be required for registering a criminal case and an arrest under this law would not be subject to any approval.
