The 2026 midterm election which is set to take place across the United States in a few hours from now is going to be a crucial political test for President Donald Trump and both major parties (Democrats and Republicans). The Indian Navy, with support from the Indian Air Force, has rescued all 20 crew members of the Iranian fishing vessel Azini after a 48-hour operation against armed Somali pirates more than 3,000 km from Mumbai. No casualties or injuries were reported. The vessel was seized on 29 October off the northeastern coast of Somalia, between Bandarbayla and Hafun. About 12 armed pirates boarded the Iranian-flagged dhow, which was carrying Iranian crew. Maritime authorities, including the EU-backed Maritime Security Centre–Indian Ocean, warned that the pirates intended to use it as a “mother ship” to launch further attacks on merchant shipping in the region. In response, the Indian Navy diverted the guided-missile destroyer INS Kolkata, already on mission deployment, to intercept the vessel. It was supported by long-range maritime reconnaissance aircraft, including a P-8I, with additional assistance from platforms such as the MQ-9. After locating and tracking Azini through sustained surveillance, the naval force used calibrated non-kinetic measures to contain the vessel and prevent its escape toward busy shipping lanes. Marine Commandos (MARCOS) were then inserted by a precision airdrop from an Indian Air Force C-17 transport aircraft. In a coordinated tactical intervention, the commandos secured the vessel, overcame the pirate threat and freed the crew. Photographs released after the operation showed seized weapons, including firearms and ammunition, laid out on the deck, with INS Kolkata standing by. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the forces on Monday. “My congratulations to the Indian Navy for successfully executing a meticulously coordinated 48-hour operation to rescue all 20 crew members of the pirated fishing vessel, Azini, more than 3000 km from Mumbai in the Arabian Sea, on 2 Nov 26,” he said. “The swift localisation, interception and safe release of the crew and vessel from significantly-armed pirates, with timely support from the Indian Air Force, speak well of the Indian Navy’s high operational readiness and ability to respond decisively to maritime threats across the region.”

Donald Trump Jr has landed himself in an embarrassing moment on the campaign trail after mistakenly suggesting that Democrats want to make Ohio a state, more than two centuries after it became a US state. Speaking at a campaign event alongside Vice President JD Vance in Swanton, Ohio, on Monday (Nov 2), the US President’s eldest son appeared to confuse Ohio with Washington DC while listing what he described as Democratic plans ahead of the midterm elections. The video of his remarks has gone viral on social media.“They want to pack the Supreme Court.
Trump Jr’s Ohio slip-up draws attention
The apparent mix-up came during a final push by Vance to rally support for Republican candidates ahead of Tuesday's elections.Trump Jr did not explain how Democrats could make Ohio a state, instead moving on to attack Democratic candidates, describing them as “the most radical people ever put forth by the Democrat[ic] party”.He also targeted Ohio gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton, who is challenging Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in a closely watched race.
Why Washington DC statehood is controversial
Unlike Ohio, Washington DC is not a state. Its potential statehood has remained a contentious political issue, with Democrats supporting greater representation for its residents and Republicans arguing that statehood could give Democrats an electoral advantage. The District currently has a non-voting delegate in the House of Representatives but no voting senators.Trump Jr’s comments came just a day before Americans headed to the polls, turning an apparent slip of the tongue into an unexpected talking point during the final hours of campaigning.

Major disasters include the 2023 Yeti Airlines crash that killed 72 people, the 2024 Saurya Airlines crash that claimed 18 lives, and the 2022 Tara Air crash that killed 22. Democratic Michigan Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed delivered his closing campaign speech in Detroit, emphasizing the rising cost of living and the challenges Americans face in affording basic necessities. "I hope to be your next United States senator because, y'all, it shouldn't be this hard," El-Sayed said.He highlighted the cost of everyday essentials, including fuel, groceries, housing and healthcare. El-Sayed added that it also "shouldn't be this hard" for Americans to afford groceries, own homes and access medical care.He also criticized his Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, comparing him to a computer-controlled character in a video game, "doomed to do the same thing they're forced to do because of the programme". Turning his criticism toward President Donald Trump, El-Sayed mocked the president's use of his full Arabic name."They keep pointing to my name and my faith because they are trying to distract you," El-Sayed said, accusing Republicans of using his identity and religion as a distraction. El-Sayed was introduced at the rally by his wife, Sarah Jukaku, a psychiatrist who has largely remained out of the public spotlight throughout his campaign.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, who chairs the Senate Democrats’ campaign arm, dismissed the potential impact of Representative Haley Stevens’s decision to endorse Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers in Michigan. “I don’t think voters are going to care, because they’re focused on the price of gasoline,” Gillibrand said in an interview on Tuesday, expressing confidence in the campaign of Democratic nominee Dr. Abdul El-Sayed, who narrowly defeated Stevens in the August primary.Gillibrand praised El-Sayed’s campaign, saying, “Abdul El-Sayed has run such a strong campaign exciting new voters across the state of Michigan.” She also said she had not known “anything about” an alleged effort by Democrats to stack Alaska’s Senate ballot.

Appearing on Fox News, South Carolina Senator Darline Graham urged Republican voters not to write in another candidate's name as she faces a closely contested Senate race. Graham's campaign for a full Senate term has been complicated by a write-in effort launched by supporters of her primary opponent, Representative Ralph Norman.Warning that write-in votes could benefit her Democratic opponent, Annie Andrews, Graham said, “I’m the only conservative on the ballot, so if you skip over me, or if you do a write-in, it’s going to be a vote for Annie Andrews,” referring to the Democratic nominee. Graham later headed to a final campaign rally at a brewery in Cayce, South Carolina, where a band played “Don’t Stop Believin’” as Republican candidates gathered for a final push ahead of Election Day.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday swiftly rejected President Donald Trump’s attempt to force California to set aside potentially thousands of ballots that the Justice Department alleged may have been cast by noncitizens. The court denied the administration’s emergency request just hours after it was submitted. The unusually rapid decision by the conservative-majority court, with no dissent noted, marked another setback for the administration’s legal effort. Its case, which relied on an uncertain methodology, had already been rejected by every lower court that considered it. The administration also faced a significant timing challenge, having brought the appeal to the Supreme Court on the eve of the midterm elections, when an unknown number of the mail-in ballots in question may already have been counted. The Supreme Court did not provide an explanation for its decision, issuing only a one-sentence order.
