Donald Trump's Myrtle Beach rally was briefly interrupted when a protester stood up and shouted from the crowd while wearing a provocative shirt. Trump watched as police escorted the man out before quickly resuming his speech.
US President Donald Trump on Friday (Aug 22) travelled to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to rally for Sen. Darline Graham, who is seeking a full term after taking over the remainder of her late brother Lindsey Graham's Senate term. The POTUS's speech was briefly paused midway after a protester was removed from the venue.
At around 7:30 pm ET, a man wearing a black shirt with the words "KILL YOUR LOCAL PEDOPHILE" in white lettering stood up while Trump was speaking and shouted something that was not clearly audible.
Police and Myrtle Beach Convention Center staff escorted the man and a woman who appeared to have been attending the rally with him out of the building.
Trump watched the disruption before telling the crowd: "That's all right. That person’s going home to mom. Gonna get scolded because mom is voting for us. You know, mom is voting for us."
He then quickly returned to his speech.
Trump also brought White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt onto the stage and praised her work before she leaves the administration at the end of August. "I also want to express our thanks to a wonderful woman here tonight, who has done an unbelievable job," Trump said.
Trump joked about Leavitt's family, saying she "just had a baby" and that he had learned she "loves the baby more than she loves Donald Trump".
"I'm very angry," he quipped.
Trump said Leavitt would continue working for his political operation after leaving the White House, while also spending time with her two children.
Leavitt thanked Trump, calling her tenure as press secretary "the honor of my life".
She gave birth to her second child in May and announced on August 12 that she would leave her White House position to spend more time with her family. She told reporters aboard Air Force One that she would join the Trump-affiliated super PAC MAGA Inc. after leaving the administration.
Trump's Myrtle Beach appearance also focused on the Republican Senate runoff in South Carolina. He urged supporters to vote for Graham,
Graham faces Rep. Ralph Norman in Tuesday's Republican runoff. The winner will become the party's nominee for the November election.
Trump repeatedly urged the crowd to turn out for Graham and even asked supporters to imagine that he himself was on the ballot. "So what I really want you to do is pretend, please, that I'm on the ballot. Just come and vote. It's so important," Trump said. He added: "So just say that I'm on the ballot one more time. You got to say it, and you got to come out and vote."
