The American Kennel Club (AKC) Museum of the Dog will feature historical and fine art as well as modern interactive exhibits.

From the doghouse to a two-floor museum in Manhattan, man's best friend has an entire gallery dedicated to all things dog.

The American Kennel Club (AKC) Museum of the Dog will feature historical and fine art as well as modern interactive exhibits.

"This is a total immersion of everything dog," said AKC Museum of the Dog executive director Alan Fausel.

Its first exhibition titled "For the Love of All Things Dog" includes portraits painted in the 1800's by famed dog artists Sir Edwin Henry Landseer and Richard Ansdell as well as paintings and photographs by current artists.

"The dog paintings have been a popular subject since the Victorian era," said Fausel. "And with dogs, unlike cats, there is much more of a variety of the types of jobs they do, of the types of things they did."

The museum also has an interactive touchscreen "Meet The Breeds" table where you can learn about each of the 193 AKC recognized breeds and a kiosk that will match your picture to the dog breed you most resemble. Also, an app will let visitors interact with "Arty" the dog, a virtual tour guide.

All of the art comes from the private collections of the AKC.

This is a return to New York City for the museum. While it first opened its doors in New York City in 1982, the museum moved to Missouri in 1987. The new AKC Museum of the Dog is set to open to the public on February 8 in Midtown Manhattan.

While the museum is dedicated to the dog, visitors are not allowed to bring their canine companions inside.
