Trump claimed US elections are “rigged, stolen” and urged Republicans to back the SAVE America Act, which mandates proof of citizenship and photo ID for federal voting and penalises officials.
US President Donald Trump on Thursday (Feb 5) claimed that the American elections are “rigged, stolen”, urging Republicans to “fight for” the SAVE America Act. The legislation would require proof of US citizenship and a photo ID for federal elections while imposing penalties on non-compliant officials. The proposed act would amend the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote, “America’s Elections are Rigged, Stolen, and a Laughingstock all over the World. We are either going to fix them, or we won’t have a Country any longer.”

Trump further detailed what the SAVE Act, formally called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would include. Under the proposed law, all voters would be required to submit documentary proof of their US citizenship while registering. It will also limit the mail-in ballots except in cases of illness, disability, military, or travel.
Trump wrote, “I am asking all Republicans to fight for the following: SAVE AMERICA ACT! 1. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW VOTER ID (IDENTIFICATION!). 2. ALL VOTERS MUST SHOW PROOF OF UNITED STATES CITIZENSHIP TO REGISTER FOR VOTING. 3. NO MAIL-IN BALLOTS (EXCEPT FOR ILLNESS, DISABILITY, MILITARY, OR TRAVEL!).”
Notably, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 already bars non-citizens from voting in federal elections.
Earlier on Tuesday, the US president said, “We should have voter ID, by the way.” He added, “We should have a lot of the things that I think everybody wants to see. Who would not want voter ID? Only somebody that wants to cheat.”
