South African cricketer Hashim Amla has created a record of becoming the second-fastest batsman to register 8000 One-Day International (ODI) runs.

Amla achieved the feat while playing a World Cup match against New Zealand in Birmingham.

The right-hand batsman reached the milestone in his 176th innings. In the match, he scored 55 off 83 balls before losing his wicket to spinner Mitchell Santner.

Amla, who was on 23, ran double and reached the milestone.

Indian skipper Virat Kohli, who achieved the feat in his 175th innings, remains the fastest to reach 8000.

The top five include South Africa's AB de Villiers (182), Sourav Ganguly (200) and Rohit Sharma (200).
