NEET-UG scam: Accused who stole exam paper from NTA trunk in Jharkhand arrested

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday (July 16) arrested two people, including a key accused, in the NEET-UG scam. The key accused allegedly stolethe NEET-UG paper from a National Testing Agency (NTA) trunk in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, the news agency PTI reported, citing officials. The accused was identified asPankaj Kumar alias Aditya.

Kumar isan engineer from theNational Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur. Officials said that Kumar was arrested from Patna. The second person that the CBI arrested was Raju Singh, who allegedlyhelped Kumar steal the paper and pass iton to other gang members.

Singh was arrested fromHazaribagh.

Total 14 arrests in NEET-UGcase

With these arrests, the total numberof accused arrested in cases related to the medical entrance exam scam has reached 14. The CBI has been investigating the alleged irregularities in the medical entrance exam and has registered FIRs.

The FIR from Bihar pertains to the paper leak, while the remaining in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Maharashtra are about impersonation of candidates and cheating. The CBI's own FIRon a reference from the Union education ministry pertains to a "comprehensive investigation" into the alleged irregularities in the examination.

Court grants CBI custody of 13 suspects

Last week, the Patna High Court granted the CBI custody of 13 people arrested by the Bihar Police in connection with the case.

The agency sought the custody of these suspects, who were subsequently sent to judicial custody following a brief period of police remand.
