A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud on Thursday (Jul 11), postponed the hearing on several petitions regarding the alleged NEET UG medical entrance exam paper leak to July 18.

The bench was addressing petitions that claimed irregularities and malpractices during the May 5 test and requested a re-test of the exam.

The CJI-led bench noted that some of the parties have not received the affidavit filed by the Centre and National Testing Agency (NTA) and they need to thoroughly consider the responses before proceeding with arguments.

Why was hearing postponed?

The Court granted the adjournment to allow the petitioners to file their responses to the affidavits filed by the Centre and the National Testing Agency on Wednesday (Jul 10), legal news website LiveLaw said in a report.  

What happened in last hearing?

In the previous hearing on July 8, the Supreme Court had said that the reliability of NEET-UG 2024 had been compromised. The top court instructed the NTA, the agency that conducts the exam, and the Union government to submit complete affidavits, and requested a status update from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by July 10 regarding the NEET examination.

What did government say in its affidavit?

The Union government said that the Ministry of Education had asked IIT Madras to conduct all-inclusive data analytics of the results of NEET-UG 2024 candidates, in compliance with the Supreme Court's directives. 

The Centre informed the Supreme Court that there was no evidence of widespread cheating or any specific groups of candidates were unfairly benefiting from abnormal scores in NEET-UG 2024.

It may be mentioned here, NEET-UG 2024 was attended by 23.33 lakh students on May 5 across 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 cities overseas. 

The exam was conducted by NTA.

NEET-UG is the entrance test for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other medical related courses in government and private institutions across nation.
