The operation was launched in Hapatnaar area of Budgam District following information about the presence of militants in the area, a police official said.
The search operation turned into a gunbattle after militants opened fire on security forces, the official added.
52 Rashtriya Rifles, Budgam police and CRPF personnel are involved in the operation against the terrorists.
