Amazon to generate 50,000 jobs in India amid coronavirus

Amazon India has stated the roles generated will help the company meet the surge in demand from people on Amazon's online shopping services.

One of the biggest e-commerce company, Amazon India, has announced that it will be generating 50,000 seasonal roles.

The news has come at a point when thousands of people are losing their jobs due to the nationwide lockdown which has been in place for the past three months. The economy has taken a hit due to the pandemic.

Amazon India has stated the roles generated will help the company meet the surge in demand from people on Amazon's online shopping services.

Amazon had to stop deliveries for almost two months due to the lockdown. However, it say a sudden increase in demand as the country moved into lockdown 4.0, and Amazon India got the permission to start delivering again.

According to a digital media company, the hiring will include a variety of roles in their fulfilment centres and delivery network. This will also include part-time flexible work opportunities as independent contractors with Amazon Flex.

Akhil Saxena, VP, Customer Fulfilment Operations, APAC, MENA & LATAM, Amazon said, "One thing we've learned from the COVID-19 pandemic is how important a role Amazon and e-commerce can play for our customers as much as for small businesses and the economy. We take this responsibility seriously, and we're proud of the work our teams are doing to help small and other businesses deliver to our customers through this difficult time. We want to continue helping customers all over India get everything they need so they can continue to practice social distancing."

The company has been home-delivering essential and few non-essential items in lockdown 4.0. However, all delivery executives are being regularly monitored by temperature checks, hand sanitization, compulsory face masks and gloves, among other measures.
