Toyota Supra future uncertain amid BMW Z4 discontinuation

Revived in 2019, the current Supra—essentially a fixed-roof Z4 donning a Toyota badge—brought back a legendary nameplate. The Supra previously enjoyed a successful four-generation run from 1978 to 2002. Magna Steyr's role in the story is significant, as this high-volume manufacturer has churned out millions of vehicles for various car companies over the past century. However, with the BMW partnership dissolving, the fate of the Supra hinges on Toyota's next move.

Sales figures paint a potentially challenging picture. Since its return, the Supra has only amassed roughly 24,000 buyers in the US, with a reported 50% sales slump this year alone. The departure of former CEO Akio Toyoda, a fervent advocate for sports car development within Toyota, further muddies the waters. Without his influence, the focus might shift away from low-volume sports cars like the Supra.

Developing an entirely new platform and engine in-house would be a substantial financial undertaking for Toyota, especially considering the dwindling sales figures. Toyota has remained tight-lipped on the Supra's future, with a company spokesperson offering a noncommittal response to inquiries: "We have nothing to share at this time."

A sliver of hope emerged from a separate statement by Toyota group vice president Dave Christ. His declaration—"I think if we want to build something, we'll figure out how to build it"—offered a hint of optimism.

Whether Toyota will forge a new partnership to keep the Supra nameplate alive or choose to let it rest remains to be seen. However, Christ's statement suggests that the company isn't necessarily closing the door on the Supra. Perhaps they'll explore an entirely new direction, partner with a different manufacturer, or even decide to develop everything in-house if deemed financially viable.
