Luxury automaker Mercedes-Benz has announced plans to enhance its automated driving capabilities on German motorways. The company revealed on Monday that its cars equipped with the DRIVE PILOT system will soon be able to operate autonomously at speeds of up to 95 kilometres per hour (approximately 59 mph) in certain conditions, marking a substantial increase from the current 60 km/h limit.

This advancement is subject to certification by Germany's motor transport authority, which Mercedes-Benz anticipates receiving by the end of 2024. Following this approval, sales of the upgraded DRIVE PILOT system are slated to commence in 2025. In a move that underscores the company's commitment to its existing customers, Mercedes-Benz has stated that cars already equipped with the technology will receive the speed upgrade free of charge.

The DRIVE PILOT system represents a Level 3 autonomous driving capability, as defined by the auto industry's five-level scale of autonomous driving. At this level, the vehicle can take over driving responsibilities under specific conditions, allowing drivers to remove their hands from the steering wheel for extended periods. However, it's crucial to note that drivers must remain alert and capable of resuming control within seconds if necessary.

For the system to engage, certain conditions must be met. The car needs to detect another vehicle in front of it and have clear visibility. These prerequisites ensure that the autonomous system operates within safe parameters, maintaining Mercedes-Benz's commitment to safety alongside innovation.

In a novel approach to alerting other road users, Mercedes-Benz has installed a turquoise light on the front of vehicles equipped with this system. This light activates when the autonomous mode is engaged, serving as a visual indicator to other drivers that the car is operating autonomously. Mercedes-Benz hopes this colour will be adopted as an industry standard for autonomous vehicles, potentially paving the way for clearer communication on roads with mixed autonomous and human-driven traffic.

Looking to the future, Mercedes-Benz has set its sights on further increasing the speed capabilities of its autonomous system. The company aims to enable the DRIVE PILOT to operate at speeds up to 130 km/h (about 81 mph), though no specific timeline for this advancement has been provided. This goal aligns with the higher speeds commonly encountered on German autobahns, known for their sections without speed limits.

Mercedes-Benz's autonomous driving ambitions extend beyond German borders. The company has been conducting tests of its Level 3 system in Beijing, demonstrating its commitment to global markets. Additionally, Mercedes-Benz has secured approval to use the system on designated highways in two U.S. states: California and Nevada. These international efforts highlight the company's strategy to be at the forefront of autonomous driving technology worldwide.

Markus Schaefer, Chief Technology Officer at Mercedes-Benz, expressed optimism about the rapid adoption of Level 3 systems in China. He noted that while Chinese authorities are "very safety-conscious" and scrutinise data in detail, he expects approval for wider use of Level 3 systems to come "very quickly" in the country. Schaefer emphasised the fast-moving nature of the Chinese market, suggesting that once approved, the adoption of this technology could accelerate rapidly.

This development by Mercedes-Benz represents a significant step in the evolution of autonomous driving technology. As one of the world's leading luxury car manufacturers, the company's advancements in this field are likely to influence industry standards and consumer expectations. The gradual increase in autonomous driving capabilities, from 60 km/h to 95 km/h and potentially to 130 km/h in the future, illustrates the incremental yet steady progress being made in this technology.
