US elections 2024 areset to take place on Tuesday (Nov. 5). The general election day is always November's first Tuesday. College students planning to cast their vote this year should know that each state has its own laws and procedures regarding the voting process. Here is everything that you should know before you cast your votes this year.
What is the deadline for first-time voters?
Every state has different registration deadlines for first-time voters. Every state except North Dakota requires registration several weeks before the voting day.
Are college students allowed to vote in the area where their college is located, or do they have to vote in their home jurisdiction?
Students have dual residency, and they can register to vote either with their home address or with their campus address. They have the right to cast their votes in either place, but they cannot vote in both areas. If they are out-of-state students, they should research the voter ID requirements, as every state has its own rules.

How to register as a first-time voter?
The majority of the US states allow online registrations, except for a few that do not allow registering online for casting votes. These seven states—Missouri, Texas, Wyoming, Arkansas, South Dakota, New Hampshire, and Mississippi—require mailing in a form or in-person registration, as per Ballotpedia, an organisation for voter education.

If a student is already registered, ensure that registration is up-to-date with the current state. It could either be the home state or campus state and updating the registration accordingly is a must.
Are student IDs allowed for voting?
Currently, around 20 states in the US allow student IDs for voting but using them can be complicated. Several states require certain kinds of information in student IDs. Students can get help from college or check the state's official election websites about the rules related to student IDs.
