US presidential election: Harris campaign dismisses Trump's debate announcement

United States (US) Vice President and presumptive Democratic presidential nomineeKamala Harris' campaign on Saturday (Aug 3) dismissed Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump'sannouncement that he was willing to debate her on Fox News network.
Trump's announcement came after he declined to participate in a previously scheduled debate on ABC on September 10.
'Trump running straight to Fox News...'
In a statement,Harris' campaign communications director Michael Tyler said that Trump was running scared andtrying to back out of the debatehe already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out.
"He needs to stop playing games and show up to the debate he already committed to on Sept 10," Tyler added.

Trump's debate offer
On Friday, the Republicanpresidential candidatesaid he agreedto an offer from Fox News to hold a debatewith Harris on September 4. In a post on Truth Social, Trump said, "Rules will be similar to the rules of my debate with Sleepy Joe, who has been treated horribly by his party, but with a full arena audience."
This post was removed for a few minutes before it was repostedwith Trump deleting his proposal for a "major" town hall gathering on the same date ifHarriswas "unwilling or unable to debate."
In July, Harris said she was readyafter Fox News proposed the presidential debate between the two candidates on September17.
Harris clinches Democratic presidential nomination
As US PresidentJoe Biden dropped out of the White House raceon July 21 and backedHarris, Trump said he would not debate her because she was not the official candidate.As proof of her lack of support, he added that former presidentBarack Obama had yet to endorse her. But Obama did so a day later.
On Friday, shesecured the delegate votes needed to clinch the Democraticpresidential nomination.

The Democratic party delegates voted virtually this week.Harris, who joined the livestream event where the announcement was made, said she would officially accept the nomination next week after the virtual voting period had closed.
