US man who called 911 for help fatally shot by cop; victim's kin demands officer's arrest

Police in the American city of Las Vegas are investigating a case where a police officer fatally shot a 43-year-old man who had called 911 for help during a home invasion. Media reports earlier this week said that the victim was identified as Brandon Durham.
Durham and his 15-year-old daughter were at their home when the shooting happened on November 12. A report by The Guardian on Thursday (Nov. 21) said that Durham's family has called for the officer's arrest.
What happened on November 12?
According to the police, Durham called the emergency line on the morning of November 12 to report that two people were shooting outside of his house and were trying to break in.

In a statement, the police said Durham stated that someone had entered through the front and back doors of the house, and he was locking himself in the bathroom.
"Simultaneously, officers arrived in the area, including Officer Alexander Bookman. They observed damage to the house and could hear screaming coming from inside the residence. Based on the circumstances, Officer Bookman kicked in the front door," the statement said.
As the cops entered the residence, they located Durham and a woman named Alejandra Boudreaux struggling over a knife. Bookman yelled to drop the knife and then fired at Durham.
Footage showed that both Durham and Boudreaux fell to the ground, and Bookman advanced and fired his gun five more times.
"Officers took Boudreaux into custody and provided medical attention to Durham. Medical personnel were summoned and pronounced Durham deceased at the scene," the police statement said.
Boudreaux, meanwhile, was arrested and booked into the Clark County Detention Centre. According to the police,Boudreaux appeared to have had some relationship with Durham.
Family, lawyers call for accountability
Earlier this week, civil rights attorney Lee Merritt, who is representing Durham's family, said he believed that an arrest warrant (against Bookman) should be issued immediately.
“Brandon was found in his hallway to his bedroom, in his underwear, asking for help while an assailant attempted to stab him using a large knife,” Merritt added.
The attorney pointed out that Durham was not directing deadly force at anyone and there was no justification for the police to use deadly force against the 43-year-old man.
