Russia tests submarine capable of carrying Poseidon 'doomsday' missiles that can trigger radioactive tsunami

Russian nuclear submarine Khabarovsk has been launched for the first time and put to sea. The submarine can carry nuclear “doomsday” torpedoes, which would be launched with such force that they would trigger tsunamis. The trials happened in the White Sea last week. The submarine carries regular anti-ship and land-attack missiles, and on top of them, can carry up to six Poseidon nuclear torpedoes. These missiles are believed to have a range of nearly 10,000 kilometres and a dive capability of 3,280ft. Meanwhile, the Khabarovsk submarine reportedly costs £1billion and has a 10,000-ton displacement.

Poseidon can unleash major tsunami waves, triggering massive devastation on land because of the massive radioactive surge created inland, analysts say. Russian President Putin confirmed a Poseidon test earlier this year. Last year, he also claimed that the missile cannot be intercepted.

The claim that Poseidon cannot be intercepted remains unverified.

Poseidon can sink cities

"There is nothing like this. There is no way to intercept it," he told a group of military officials last year. Russia developed the submarine as a response to the US's withdrawal from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty in 20 Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev said at the time that Poseidon is a true "doomsday weapon". The missile is around 65 to 80 ft long and about 6.5ft in diameter.

Meanwhile, analysts say that the claims that the missiles can cause a continent-sweeping radioactive tsunami are likely wrong and scientifically impossible. But they agree that Poseidon is meant to create terror, and its sheer scale and power are doing just that. Nevertheless, the missiles can unleash havoc on coastal cities, and turn affected land toxic for years.
